Comments on `Nonlocal strain softening bar revisited' by Christer Nilsson: [International Journal of Solids and Structures 34 (1997) 4399-4419]

1999

Nilsson (1997) addressed the analytical solution of an elastic plastic softening bar in extension within the framework of nonlocal plasticity, making use to this purpose of a theory of nonlocal plasticity preliminary devised in the same paper (Section 2). The results there presented - from the thermodynamic arguments supporting the devised theory, to the bar solution - are quite interesting. The writers, involved in the same research area, wish to discuss a few points of the paper in a fully collaborative spirit. We use the same notation as in Nilsson's paper.

Meaning Extraction from Strappare Causatives in Italian

2021

The work targets a little-known causative construction of Italian whose causative verb is strappare ‘tear/extort/snatch’ (e.g. Ada strappò la confessione a Piero ‘Ada made Piero confess against his will’). In the active voice of this clause type, the subject, licensed by strappare, is invariably associated with the semantic role ‘Causer’ (as fare does in fare causatives, see [1]), whilst the post-verbal NP (e.g. confessione ‘confession’) is best analyzed as the predicate licensing the remaining syntactic function/s and the related semantic role/s. The NooJ grammar which the authors propose automatically extracts the meaning of strappare causatives by means of a novel type of semantic role. …

Neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses: The current status

1992

In view of the epidemiological connotation of childhood neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL) as one of the most frequent progressive lysosomal diseases and neurodegenerative disorders in children, the recognition of the individual clinical forms of childhood NCL is still based on invasive diagnostic electronmicroscopy which, currently, may be applied also for prenatal diagnosis. Like other inherited disorders, the NCL group has finally also benefited from the genetic breakthroughs of localization of the genes for infantile NCL and juvenile NCL on chromosomes 1 and 16, respectively. This review concerns recent advances in morphological studies, broadening of the clinical spectrum of childhoo…

The width of the omega meson in the nuclear medium

2013

We evaluate the width of the omega meson in nuclear matter. We consider the free decay mode of the omega into three pions, which is dominated by rho IEuro decay, and replace the rho and pi propagators by their medium-modified ones. We also take into account the quasielastic and inelastic processes induced by a vector-baryon interaction dominated by vector meson exchange, as well as the contributions coming from the mechanism with medium-modified K , propagators. We obtain a substantial increase of the omega width in the medium, reaching a value of 121 +/- 10 MeV at normal nuclear matter density for an omega at rest, which comes mainly from omega N -> pi pi N, omega NN -> pi NN processes ass…

Photoaffinity cross-linking of F1ATPase from spinach chloroplasts by 3'-arylazido-beta-alanyl-8-azido ATP.

1994

UV irradiation of the ATPase (CF1) from spinach chloroplasts in the presence of 3'-arylazido-beta-alanyl-8-azido ATP (8,3'-DiN3ATP) results in a nucleotide-dependent inactivation of the enzyme and in a nucleotide-dependent formation of alpha-beta cross-links. The results demonstrate an interfacial localization of the nucleotide binding sites on CF1.

Minimally invasive secondary cytoreduction plus HIPEC for recurrent ovarian cancer: a case series.

2014

Objective To analyze the feasibility of laparoscopic/robotic secondary cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal intra-operative chemotherapy (SCS + HIPEC) in a retrospective series of isolated platinum sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer. Methods We retrospectively evaluated a consecutive series of ovarian cancer patients with isolated platinum sensitive relapse. Isolated relapse was defined as the presence of a single nodule, in a single anatomic site. In all cases the presence of isolated relapse was assessed at pre-operative FDG-PET/CT scan, and confirmed with staging laparoscopy performed immediately before SCS + HIPEC. Results 84 women with platinum sensitive relapse recei…

DIFFERENT LOCATIONS OF ENDOMETRIOSIS IN 86 PATIENTS: A SINGLE- CENTRE STUDY.

2015

Endometriosis is an important gynecologic disorder defined as the presence of functional endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. Prevalence of endometriosis is 6-10% in the general population, but rises to 35-50% in women with pelvic pain or infertility or both. The aim of this study was to retrospectively review the different locations of pelvic and extrapelvic endometriosis occurred in our Department during last 3 years.

Seawater carbonate chemistry and kelp densities and coral coverages at three study locations and photosynthesis and calcification of corals measured …

2021

Ocean warming is altering the biogeographical distribution of marine organisms. In the tropics, rising sea surface temperatures are restructuring coral reef communities with sensitive species being lost. At the biogeographical divide between temperate and tropical communities, warming is causing macroalgal forest loss and the spread of tropical corals, fishes and other species, termed “tropicalization”. A lack of field research into the combined effects of warming and ocean acidification means there is a gap in our ability to understand and plan for changes in coastal ecosystems. Here, we focus on the tropicalization trajectory of temperate marine ecosystems becoming coral-dominated systems…
