Effectiveness of hand hygiene and provision of information in preventing influenza cases requiring hospitalization☆☆☆★
2012
Background The objective of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in preventing cases of influenza requiring hospitalization. Methods We performed a multicenter case-control study in 36 hospitals, in 2010 in Spain. Hospitalized influenza cases confirmed by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and three matched controls (two hospital and one community control) per case were selected. The use of non-pharmacological measures seven days before the onset of symptoms (frequency of hand washing, use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and handwashing after touching contaminated surfaces) was collected. Results We studied 813 cases hospitalized …
Benign multicystic mesothelioma: A case report of recurrent disease in a young adult with familiarity for renal cell carcinoma
2019
Benign multi-cystic peritoneal mesothelioma (BMCM) is a very rare disease (about 150 cases observed). The aetiology is currently little-known, and the data collected, without having achieved conclusive re sults, identify two possible causes: neoplastic and reactive inflammatory. This case report refers to a recidivism of BCMC in a patient whose brother, few months before, underwent a left nephrectomy and right renal Radio Frequency Termo Ablation (RFTA) for bilateral papillary renal cell carcinoma. For the recurring trend, the onset in a male young patient without chronic inflammatory diseases evidence, the presence of a first degree relative with a rare carcinoma we supposed a neoplastic a…
Immunocytochemistry of M-cadherin in mature and regenerating rat muscle
1994
Background: Cadherins are transmembrane proteins mediating calcium-dependent cell–cell adhesion in a cell type-specific manner by means of homophilic binding. M(muscle)-cadherin is a recently detected member of the cadherin family. Methods: We have investigated the localization of M-cadherin innormal and aneurally regenerating skeletal muscle of rat by means of pre-embedding immunocytochemistry. The antibody was directed against the extra-cellular domain of M-cadherin. Results: Myoblasts and myotubes in regenerating muscles tended to be arranged in clusters enclosed by a common basal lamina. Satellite cells of mature muscle fibers were attached to the underlying fiber without separating bas…
Mutant K-ras2 in serum
2003
Mutant tumour derived DNA has been detected in the sera of colorectal cancer patients. We investigated if mutant serum KRAS2 was detectable preoperatively in a large group of patients with colorectal neoplasia. A prospective study of 94 patients who underwent putative curative resection for colorectal carcinoma (CRC) was performed to ascertain if serum mutant KRAS2 could be used postoperatively as a disease marker.Preoperative sera from 78 patients were analysed (group A). Sera from 94 patients were obtained three monthly for up to three years during the postoperative period (group B). Codon 12 and 13 KRAS2 mutations were analysed in matched tumour and serum samples. In the preoperative grou…
A prospective, randomized, triple-blind comparison of articaine and bupivacaine for maxillary infiltrations
2011
Objectives: To compare the clinical anesthetic efficacy of 0.5% bupivacaine and 4% articaine (both with 1:200.000 adrenaline) for anterior maxillary infiltration in healthy volunteers. Material and methods: A triple-blind split-mouth randomized clinical trial was carried out in 20 volunteers. A supraperiosteal buccal injection of 0.9 ml of either solution at the apex of the lateral incisor was done in 2 appointments separated 2 weeks apart. The following outcome variables were measured: latency time, anesthetic efficacy (dental pulp, keratinized gingiva, alveolar mucosa and upper lip mucosa and tissue) and the duration of anesthetic effect. Hemodynamic parameters were monitored during the p…
Prognostic factors in stage III-IV adrenocortical carcinomas (ACC): an European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumor (ENSAT) study
2015
Background: The clinical course of advanced adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is heterogeneous. Our study aimed primarily to refine and make headway in the prognostic stratification of advanced ACC.Patients and methods: Patients with advanced ENSAT ACC (stage III or stage IV) at diagnosis registered between 2000 and 2009 in the ENSAT database were enrolled. The primary end point was overall survival (OS). Parameters of potential prognostic relevance were selected. Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out: model 1 'before surgery'; model 2 'post-surgery'.Results: Four hundred and forty-four patients with advanced ENSAT ACC (stage III: 210; stage IV: 234) were analyzed. After a medi…
Dysfunction of attention switching networks in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
2019
Objective To localise and characterise changes in cognitive networks in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using source analysis of mismatch negativity (MMN) waveforms. Rationale The MMN waveform has an increased average delay in ALS. MMN has been attributed to change detection and involuntary attention switching. This therefore indicates pathological impairment of the neural network components which generate these functions. Source localisation can mitigate the poor spatial resolution of sensor-level EEG analysis by associating the sensor-level signals to the contributing brain sources. The functional activity in each generating source can therefore be individually measured and investigat…
Hsp10 nuclear localization and changes in lung cells response to cigarette smoke suggest novel roles for this chaperonin
2014
Heat-shock protein (Hsp)10 is the co-chaperone for Hsp60 inside mitochondria, but it also resides outside the organelle. Variations in its levels and intracellular distribution have been documented in pathological conditions, e.g. cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Here, we show that Hsp10 in COPD undergoes changes at the molecular and subcellular levels in bronchial cells from human specimens and derived cell lines, intact or subjected to stress induced by cigarette smoke extract (CSE). Noteworthy findings are: (i) Hsp10 occurred in nuclei of epithelial and lamina propria cells of bronchial mucosa from non-smokers and smokers; (ii) human bronchial epithelial (16HBE) a…
Double-blind, randomized pilot study of bioadhesive chlorhexidine gel in the prevention and treatment of mucositis induced by chemoradiotherapy of he…
2015
Background: To evaluate, in an initial way, the effectiveness of bioadhesive chlorhexidine gel 0.2% versus placebo as a preventive and therapeutic intervention of oral mucositis induced by radiation therapy and chemotherapy in patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer treated with chemoradiotherapy. Material and Methods: In this pilot study, 7 patients (range of age: 18- 65), having histological documented diagnosis of squamous carcinoma on the head and neck region in stage III and IV, and receiving combined radiation treatment and chemotherapy (cisplatin 100 mg/m2 IV on days 1, 22, and 43 of irradiation) were studied. Simultaneously, a topical application was performed with bioadhesive …
Spontaneous mechanical activity and evoked responses in isolated gastric preparations from normal and dystrophic (mdx) mice
2002
This study examined whether alterations of the spontaneous and evoked mechanical activity are present in the stomach of the mdx mouse, the animal model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The gastric mechanical activity from whole-organ of normal and mdx mice was recorded in vitro as changes of intraluminal pressure. All gastric preparations developed spontaneous tone and phasic contractions, although the tone of the mdx preparations was significantly greater. Atropine reduced the tone of the two preparations by the same degree. Nomega-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME) significantly increased the tone and spontaneous contractions only in the stomach from normal animals, but did not affect…
