High-gradient testing of an $S$-band, normal-conducting low phase velocity accelerating structure

A novel high-gradient accelerating structure with low phase velocity, $v/c=0.38$, has been designed, manufactured and high-power tested. The structure was designed and built using the methodology and technology developed for CLIC $100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$ high-gradient accelerating structures, which have speed of light phase velocity, but adapts them to a structure for nonrelativistic particles. The parameters of the structure were optimized for the compact proton therapy linac project, and specifically to 76 MeV energy protons, but the type of structure opens more generally the possibility of compact low phase velocity linacs. Zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of viscous liquids

Abstract We report zero-field NMR measurements of a viscous organic liquid, ethylene glycol. Zero-field spectra were taken showing resolved scalar spin–spin coupling (J-coupling) for ethylene glycol at different temperatures and water contents. Molecular dynamics strongly affects the resonance linewidth, which closely follows viscosity. Quantum chemical calculations have been used to obtain the relative stability and coupling constants of all ethylene glycol conformers. The results show the potential of zero-field NMR as a probe of molecular structure and dynamics in a wide range of environments, including viscous fluids.
Invisible width of the Z-boson and “secret” ν-ν interactions

Abstract The width of the decay Z→ν ν ν ν in the presence of a possible nonstandard four-fermion ν-ν interaction is calculated. From the invisible width of the Z-boson measured at LEP the upper bound on the strength F of such an effective interaction has been obtained: F≲4×102GF. This bound is about three orders of magnitude lower than earlier existing particle physics bounds and it is comparable with an estimate that can be obtained from supernova neutrino data. The expression for the spectrum of leptons in the decays W→lν l ν ν is also presented.
On the condition number of the antireflective transform

Abstract Deconvolution problems with a finite observation window require appropriate models of the unknown signal in order to guarantee uniqueness of the solution. For this purpose it has recently been suggested to impose some kind of antireflectivity of the signal. With this constraint, the deconvolution problem can be solved with an appropriate modification of the fast sine transform, provided that the convolution kernel is symmetric. The corresponding transformation is called the antireflective transform. On Ekeland's variational principle in partial metric spaces

In this paper, lower semi-continuous functions are used to extend Ekeland's variational principle to the class of parti al metric spaces. As consequences of our results, we obtain some fixed p oint theorems of Caristi and Clarke types.
Weak A-frames and weak A-semi-frames

After reviewing the interplay between frames and lower semi-frames, we introduce the notion of lower semi-frame controlled by a densely defined operator $A$ or, for short, a weak lower $A$-semi-frame and we study its properties. In particular, we compare it with that of lower atomic systems, introduced in (GB). We discuss duality properties and we suggest several possible definitions for weak $A$-upper semi-frames. Concrete examples are presented.

It is well-known that male breast cancer (MBC) susceptibility is mainly due to high-penetrance BRCA1/2 mutations. Here, we investigated whether common low-penetrance breast cancer (BC) susceptibility alleles may influence MBC risk in Italian population and whether variant alleles may be associated with specific clinicopathological features of MBCs. In the frame of the Italian Multicenter Study on MBC, we genotyped 413 MBCs and 745 age-matched male controls at 9 SNPs annotating known BC susceptibility loci. The need to answer the question “how much of the familial risk is currently explained by the known genes?” has increased ,and although BRCA1 and BRCA2 are considered the two major breast cancer (BC) susceptibility genes, they do not justify the entire percentage of all hereditary BC cases. The current consensus is that other BC predisposing genes could explain at least a portion of the remaining non-mutated familial cases, including not only other high- penetrance BC genes, but also moderate and low-penetrance genes.
