Warrant Exercise and Bond Conversion in Large Trader Economies

2006

It is well known that the sequential (premature) exercise of American-type warrants may be advantageous for large warrantholders, even in the absence of regular dividends, because using exercise proceeds to repurchase stock or to expand the firm's scale increases the riskiness of an equity share. We present an upper bound on this advantage and show that this advantage is negligible for a realistic parameter setting. This result, however, does not justify in general the simplifying restriction that warrants or convertible securities are valued as if exercised as a block. It turns out that the option to exercise only a fraction of the outstanding convertibles at the maturity date (partial exe…

Parenté et organisation sociale chez les Wayùu. Retour sur la question

2021

Recurrent daily rainfall patterns over South Africa and associated dynamics during the core of the austral summer

2010

This paper investigates the influence of some modes of climate variability on the spatio-temporal rainfall variability over South Africa during the core of the rainy season, December to February (DJF). All analyses are based directly on the rainfall field instead of atmospheric processes and dynamics. An original agglomerative hierarchical clustering approach is used to classify daily rainfall patterns recorded at 5352 stations from DJF 1971 to DJF 1999. Five clusters are retained for analysis. Amongst them, one cluster looks most like the rainfall and circulation mean picture. Another one, representing 37% of the days, describes strong negative rainfall anomalies over South Africa resultin…

A computational framework for low-cycle fatigue in polycrystalline materials

2021

Abstract A three-dimensional framework for low-cycle fatigue analysis of polycrystalline aggregates is proposed in this work. First, a cohesive law coupling plasticity and damage is developed for modelling cycle-by-cycle degradation of material interfaces up to complete de-cohesion and failure. The law may model both quasi-static degradation under increasing monotonic load and degradation under cyclic loading, through a coupled plasticity-damage model whose activation and flow rules are formulated in a thermodynamically consistent framework. The proposed interface laws have been then implemented and coupled with a multi-region boundary element formulation, with the aim of analysing low-cycl…

A non-linear Ritz method for the analysis of low velocity impact induced dynamics in variable angle tow composite laminates

2021

Abstract Variable angle tow (VAT) laminates feature composite layers reinforced by fibres following continuous curved paths and offer a wide structural design space for the manufacturing of composite components. In this work, a formulation for the analysis of the impact-induced dynamics in VAT laminated plates is proposed, implemented and tested in this work. The method is based on the adoption of first order shear deformation kinematics and includes von Karman non-linear strains. The discrete system is obtained by employing a pb-2 Ritz series expansion into the Hamilton’s variational statement, while the impact loading is modelled through Hertzian contact law. The resulting non-linear gove…

Improvement of photo-stability of LLDPE-based nanocomposites

2006

LLDPE-based nanocomposites undergo faster photo-oxidation than the unfilled matrix and the extent of their physical properties deterioration, namely elongation at break and tensile strength, is dependent on the organo-nanoclay loading. The observed acceleration is not due to faster photo-oxidation but rather due to a reduction of the oxidation induction time. The presence in the organoclays of trace amounts of metal ions may be promoting catalytic photodegradation. While UV absorbers provide useful protection, use of a metal deactivator has been found to greatly enhance the photo-stability of the LLDPE-based nanocomposites. Combinations of a metal deactivator and UV absorber yield synergist…

Finite index subgroups of mapping class groups

2011

Let g ≥ 3 and n ≥ 0, and let Mg,n be the mapping class group of a surface of genus g with n boundary components. We prove that Mg,n contains a unique subgroup of index 2g−1(2g − 1) up to conjugation, a unique subgroup of index 2g−1(2g + 1) up to conjugation, and the other proper subgroups ofMg,n are of index greater than 2g−1(2g+1). In particular, the minimum index for a proper subgroup of Mg,n is 2g−1(2g − 1). AMS Subject Classification. Primary: 57M99. Secondary: 20G40, 20E28. 0 Introduction and statement of results The interaction between mapping class groups and finite groups has long been a topic of interest. The famous Hurwitz bound of 1893 showed that the mapping class group of a clo…

Energy minimization of single input orbit transfer by averaging and continuation

2006

AbstractThis article deals with the transfer between Keplerian coplanar orbits using low propulsion. We focus on the energy minimization problem and compute the averaged system, proving integrability and relating the corresponding trajectories to a three-dimensional Riemannian problem that is analyzed in details. The geodesics provide approximations of the extremals of the energy minimization problem and can be used in order to evaluate the optimal trajectories of the time optimal and the minimization of the consumption problems with continuation methods. In particular, minimizing trajectories for transfer towards the geostationary orbit can be approximated in suitable coordinates by straig…

Discrete and differential homotopy in circular restricted three-body control

2010

The planar circular restricted three-body problem is considered. The control enters linearly in the equation of motion to model the thrust of the third body. The minimum time optimal control problem has two scalar parameters: The ratio of the primaries masses which embeds the two-body problem into the three-body one, and the upper bound on the control norm. Regular extremals of the maximum principle are computed by shooting thanks to continuations with respect to both parameters. Discrete and di erential homotopy are compared in connection with second order sucient conditions in optimal control. Homotopy with respect to control bound gives evidence of various topological structures of extr…

Fractal Weyl law for open quantum chaotic maps

2014

We study the semiclassical quantization of Poincar\'e maps arising in scattering problems with fractal hyperbolic trapped sets. The main application is the proof of a fractal Weyl upper bound for the number of resonances/scattering poles in small domains near the real axis. This result encompasses the case of several convex (hard) obstacles satisfying a no-eclipse condition.
