Besides its essential role in hemostasis, there is growing evidence that von Willebrand factor (VWF) has an additional antitumor effect. To elucidate the clinical significance of this biological activity we conducted a retrospective study on cancers among Italian patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD) on behalf of the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres (AICE). AbstractData from the Italian Hemophilia Centres were collected to perform a retrospective survey of joint arthroplasty in patients with severe hemophilia. Twenty-nine of 49 hemophilia centers reported that 328 of the 347 operations were carried out in 253 patients with severe hemophilia A (HA) and 19 in 15 patients with severe hemophilia B (HB). When results were normalized to the whole Italian hemophilia population (1770 severe HA and 319 severe HB), patients with HA had a 3-fold higher risk of undergoing joint arthroplasty (odds ratio [OR], 3.38; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.97-5.77; P < .001). This paper reviews primary gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (GI-NHL). Every aspect of the topic is discussed though special attention is paid to histopathology and instrumental diagnosis as essential factors to stage the lymphoma and to determine an adequate therapy. Data from the most important works on the subject together with the results of our recent study of 40 primary GI-NHL are reported. Diverse findings by various authors are intentionally compared in a manner to present the work to the reader in the most critical way while trying to give an objective explanation of the different results on the basis of our own experience.

Thymoma and pure red cell aplasia in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

We present the case of a female patient with a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at the age of 54 years. At the age of 63 years, she suffered from malignant thymoma and 3 years after removal of the thymoma a diagnosis of pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) was established. This is, to our knowledge, the first report of the occurrence of SLE, thymoma and PRCA in the same patient. The case is discussed with regard to the already known associations between these diseases.

The importance of the pericardium and the pericardial fluid (PF) in the control of cardiac function has emerged over the past few years. Despite the acknowledgment that amphibians are exposed to both dehydration and excessive water accumulation, nothing is known about their pericardial structure and the morphological basis of the PF formation. We have studied the parietal pericardium (PP) morphology in Rana esculenta by electron microscopy. Therapy-related myelodysplasia and acute myeloid leukemia (t-MDS/AML) are malignancies occurring after exposure to chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Several studies have addressed cumulative dose, dose intensity and exposure to specific agents of preceding cytotoxic therapy in relation to the risk of developing such leukemia. Since only a small percentage of patients exposed to cytotoxic therapy develop t-MDS/AML, it has been suggested that some genetic predisposition may be involved, specifically associated to polymorphisms in certain genes involved in chemotherapy/radiotherapy response - fundamentally genes intervening in drug detoxification and DNA synthesis and repair.
