Hybrid aerosol assisted atmospheric pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition: a facile route toward nano-composite thin films?
2009
A hybrid chemical vapour deposition strategy is presented as a facile route for the production of vanadium dioxide nano-composite thin films. The effect of the inclusion of gold nano-particles and the use of a surfactant molecule; tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB), is discussed. The films are fully characterised and it is shown that micro-structural changes lead to an enhancement of thermochromic properties, whilst gold nano-particles lead to a change in the films optical properties. Optical data is used in energy modelling studies to elucidate the films potential as an energy saving coating in architectural glazing.

Nanotecnology in restoration: cleaning and consolidation of stonework
2012
This paper describes a project using nanotechnology to improve the characteristics of reliability, compatibility and resistance over a period of time, of products for the restoration and conservation of structures of historic-artistic value, through experimentation with nano-structured materials. The research project specifically tackles two issues, with regard to cleaning and consolidation, testing the new products on samples of stone material taken from the archaeological site at Morgantina (in the centre of Sicily).
Nanotecnologie in Edilizia.

Natural Fiber-Reinforced Composites
2012
Over the last decade, composites of polymers reinforced with natural fibres have received increasing attention, both from the academic world and from several industries. There is a wide range of natural fibres which can be applied as reinforcements or fillers thanks to their properties and availability; i.e. flax, hemp, jute, kenaf and sisal. Natural fibres are mainly attractive for the following reasons: specific properties, price, health advantages and recyclability. Particularly, industry is getting more and more interested in environment-friendly products and therefore the research on natural fibre based on composite materials is gaining importance. Some of the benefits linked to the us…
Evaluation and application of Opuntia ficus-indica insulation panel
2015
Today the attention to the building sustainability issue is increasingly important, because of the major responsibility of the buildings field in the environmental degradation: both in terms of energy consumption from non-renewable sources and the raw materials impoverishment. In addition, the level of comfort required by users are growing and the thermal insulation of buildings becomes the key element in the reduction of energy consumption and C02 emissions, both in the case of new construction and existing ones. The thermal insulation of buildings is the key element in the reduction of energy consumption and C02 emissions due to the cooling of building interiors, both in the case of new c…
Photo-stabilization of biopolymers-based nanocomposites with UV-modified layered silicates
2020
Abstract Eco-friendly in-situ stabilised biopolymer nanocomposites based on polyamide 11 (PA11) and polylactic acid (PLA) were prepared by melt mixing in the presence of a modified organo-montmorillonite clay containing a chemically-bound hindered amine UV-stabilising function, [(UV)OM-MMt]. Characterisation of the newly synthesised organo-modifier containing the reactive hindered amine (HAS) UV-stabilising function [(UV)OM] has confirmed a successful synthesis. The (UV)OM was then introduced into NaMMt through ion exchange reaction to prepare the UV stabiliser-bound organo-modified-MMt, [(UV)OM-MMt]. The in-situ stabilised PA11- and PLA- nanocomposites (PA11-(UV)OM-MMt and PLA-(UV)OM-MMt) …
Thermomechanical Characterization of Polylactic Acid and Composites
2018
This paper presents the experimental tests for the thermomechanical characterization of biopolymer polylactic acid, and its composites with beech flour or with nanoreiforcement of modified montmorillonite, in order to evaluate any applicability in the automotive sector. Tests of torque and traction are executed for the mechanical characterization and the results comparison; dynamical tests are executed for the thermomechanical characterization, determining the elastic modulus and loss factor versus the actual temperature.
Caratterizzazione termomeccanica dell’acido polilattico e due suoi compositi
2018
This paper presents the experimental tests for the thermomechanical characterization of biopolymer polylactic acid, and its composites with beech flour…
