An experimental investigation on performances recovery of glass fiber reinforced composites exposed to a salt-fog/dry cycle

2023

The main goal of this paper is the evaluation of the properties reversibility of glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRPs) under discontinuous exposure to aggressive environmental conditions, typical of marine applications. To this aim, the GFRP manufactured through vacuum infusion process has been initially aged in humid conditions (i.e., exposure to salt-fog at 35 ◦C) for 15 and 30 days and then stored under controlled dry conditions (i.e., 50% R.H. and 23 ◦C) for times varying between 0 and 21 days. In order to evaluate the recover capability of this material, its water uptake has been monitored along the quasi-static flexural properties during the entire humid/dry cycle. Moreover, both 3D…

Durability behavior of bio-epoxy/jute-basalt hybrid composites for cladding

2016

The technology of dry assembly to produce multi-layer panels is an efficient alternative to traditional systems. Eco-sustainable systems are increasingly studied, particularly fiber reinforced composites for external cladding, based on natural fibers. However, the durability of these composites gives serious concern, in particular for their potential use in outdoor applications. To overcome this drawback, hybridization of natural fibers with mineral fibers as basalt ones appears promising. In this paper, the aging resistance of jute-reinforced laminate was compared with those of two hybrid laminates.

Wettability of flax/basalt reinforced composites during aging in salt spray conditions

2015

Aim of this work was to investigate the wettability of natural fibres reinforced epoxy composites, subjected to aging tests performed on two different laminates. The first laminate was constituted by stacking ten layers of bidirectional flax fabrics. The second one was produced by replacing two external flax layers with two layers of basalt mat, for each side of the laminate. Both laminates were exposed to salt-fog environmental conditions, according to ASTM B 117 standard, for 60 days. The results of wettability were compared with those of the water uptake test. Moreover, an analysis of variance was performed in order to evaluate the significance of the parameters that influence the wettab…

Ionic tactile sensors as promising biomaterials for artificial skin: Review of latest advances and future perspectives

2021

Abstract Ionic tactile sensors (ITS) are an emerging subfield of wearable electronics, capable of mimicking the human skin, including not only the typical anisotropic structure, mechanical behaviour, and tactile functions but even the mechanosensitive ionic channels that are crucial for the human sense of touch. With the rapid development of intelligent technology, such bioinspired materials constitute the core foundation of intelligent systems and are a candidate to be the next generation e-skins, offering a more accurate and evolved biointerface. In the latest years, a wealth of novel ultra-stretchable ITS was proposed, progressively refining the choice of soft materials, including ion ge…

Modification of carboxyl groups of poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) via facile wet chemistry method: A kinetic study

2010

Abstract In this work, we present the results of a kinetic study of the surface modification of the carboxyl group of poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) into acyl chloride. Reaction temperature and time, concentration of the reactants, kind of agitation have been changed in order to understand their effect on the conversion. A study on the penetration of the reaction inside the sample bulk was also performed. The results indicate that, when short reaction times are adopted, the reaction limits to the outer layers of the samples and, in this case, on increasing the temperature, the concentration of the reactants and the stirring allows having a faster kinetic. At longer reaction times, the react…

New phosphazene-based chain extenders containing allyl and epoxide groups

2003

In this paper we present the synthesis and the characterization of cyclophosphazenes substituted with allyl groups, their transformation in epoxide-containing cyclophosphazenes and the final utilization of these compounds as chain extenders in combination with polyamides. The reaction at high temperature of Nylon-6 with epoxy-functionalized cyclophosphazenes leads to the opening of the epoxy units by the action of both amino (--NH2) and carboxylic (--COOH) end-groups of the polymer to enhance the final molecular weight of this material. The consequences of this fact on the thermal, mechanical and visco-elastic properties of treated Nylon-6 have been also evaluated and compared to those of t…

Mesophase formation in poly(propylene-ran-1-butene) by rapid cooling

2009

Abstract The effect of random insertion of low amount of 1-butene of less than about 11 mol% into the isotactic polypropylene chain on structure formation at non-isothermal crystallization at different rate of cooling was investigated by X-ray scattering, density measurements, and atomic force and polarizing optical microscopy. Emphasis is put on the evaluation of the condition of crystallization for replacement of lamellar crystals by mesomorphic nodules on increasing the cooling rate/supercooling. In the polypropylene homopolymer, mesophase formation occurs on cooling at rates larger about 150–200 K s −1 , while in case of poly(propylene- ran -1-butene) mesophase formation is observed on …

“Effect of Filler Type and Processing Apparatus on the Properties of the Recycled “Light Fraction” from Municipal Post-Consumer Plastics”

2001

Plastic waste or scraps are generated from two main sources: industrial wastes and post-consumer wastes. By using the flotation method, generally two fractions are obtained from municipal post-consumer wastes: a light fraction, floating on water, and a heavy fraction. The former is essentially made of low and high density polyethylene—LDPE, HDPE—and polypropylene—PP; the heavy fraction is formed by poly(vinyl chloride)—PVC—and poly(ethylene terephthalate)—PET. In this work, the recycling of a light fraction from municipal post-consumer plastics has been studied, considering also the effect of filler type—glass fibres, calcium carbonate and wood fibres—and processing apparatus—discountinous …

Use of PP-g-OXA in the Compatibilization of PP/LCP Blends

1999

Abstract Adding small amounts of liquid crystalline polymers (LCP) to flexible thermoplastic matrices (FTP) allows to enhance the mechanical and thermomechanical properties. Therefore it is possible to obtain materials with new properties only by simple mixing. A strong shortcoming is the incompatibility between LCP and FTP that leads to materials with very poor properties unusable for commercial pourposes. The presence of a compatibilizer is therefore required. Oxazoline functionality is known to be highly reactive toward many other functional groups and then oxazoline functionalized polymers can be efficiently used as compatibilizer precursors. In this work the compatibilizazion of polypr…
