Genetic variability of the blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus in the Western Mediterranean Sea inferred by DNA microsatellite loci

Genetic variation at eight microsatellite loci was studied in nine populations of the blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus to investigate whether distinct stocks are present in the Western Mediterranean Sea. A high level of gene flow and no evidence of genetic partitioning were discovered. No significant variation was found (FST = 0.00673, P-value = 0.067) even when shrimps from exploited and those from deep-water unexploited grounds were compared. No evidence of reduction or expansion of population size in the recent past was found, as indicated by the bottleneck and interlocus g-tests. Living Coccolithophores from the Gulf of Sirte (Southern Mediterranean Sea) during the summer of 2008

The Gulf of Sirte is a largely unexplored area in the southernmost Mediterranean Sea.We are presenting here 2008 summer data on the distribution pattern of living coccolithophores, a main phytoplankton calcifying group, in 105 samples from 20 stations. The survey includes coastal and offshore stations, enabling us to provide indications on the dynamics of phytoplankton productivity in relation to oceanographic processes. The total coccosphere concentrations show higher values in the offshore stations and lower ones for coastal sites. Helminth Infection of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta caretta along the Coasts of Sicily and the North West Adriatic Sea

We provide new data on the presence of helminth parasites in 64 individual loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta stranded along the coasts of Sicily and the northwest Adriatic Sea between June 2014 and August 2016. The necropsy examination revealed 31 individuals (48.4%) positive for endoparasites, showing a greater prevalence of trematodes than nematodes. In particular, seven species and a single genus of Trematoda (Hapalotrema) and a single species and genus of Nematoda (Kathlania) were identified. Vermetid reef can be considered a key intertidal habitat of Mediterranean Sea and increasing knowledge about this natural system is important for its conservation. Aims of this study is to assess topography complexity, structure and composition of the benthic assemblages associated to reef formation in a marine protected area highlighting possible effects of the protection.

Dopo una premessa sui committenti, si indagano i più rappresentativi simulacri lignei del XVIII secolo della Sicilia occidentale. Le statue sono state eseguite, secondo la pertinente temperie culturale, da scultori locali, talvolta ignari dei tratti innovativi del tempo, che hanno reiterato stilemi dei secoli precedenti. Tra gli artisti con bottega a Palermo, aggiornati alle più moderne istanze, si annoverano Barcellona, Quattrocchi e Valenza. Altri manufatti, perlopiù ubicati nelle chiese degli ordini religiosi, sono stati approntati da autori napoletani su esplicita richiesta di attenti committenti.
