Cholesterol-Inulin Conjugates for Efficient SN38 Nuclear Delivery: Nanomedicines for Precision Cancer Therapy
2022
An amphiphilic inulin-thiocholesterol conjugate (INU-Cys-TC) was strategically designed as a biodegradable core-shell nanocarrier of 7-ethyl-10-hydroxy-camptothecin (SN38) to enhance its solubility and stability in aqueous media, thus exploiting its brilliant anticancer effect. INU-Cys-TC was designed to have the hydrophilic inulin backbone (external shell) partially functionalized with hydrophobic thiocholesterol moieties (internal core) through a biodegradable disulfide bond due to cysteamine bridges. Thiocholesterol moieties impair redox-sensitive self-assembling abilities, yielding to nano-sized micelles in aqueous media capable of efficiently encapsulating a high amount of SN38 (DL = 8…
Interactions of tryptophan and serotonin with biomembrane models: Binding to reversed micellar systems of ionic and non ionic surfactants
2001
The interactions of Tryptophan (TRP) and Serotonin (5-HT), with water-containing sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT), didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) and tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E4) reversed micelles have been investigated by UV absorption spectroscopy. Our results suggest that independently of the nature of the surfactant and the amount of the water encapsulated into the micellar core, TRP and 5-HT are solubilized in the micellar phase, preferring to be located in a shallow region constituted by the hydrated surfactant head groups. This is due to the amphiphilic nature of TRP and 5-HT and the biological implications are discussed.

Secondary Chemical Equilibria in Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography
2013
The addition of reagents to an RPLC mobile phase enables the separation of ionizable compounds, inorganic anions, and metal ions using conventional instrumentation, silica-based materials, and hydro-organic mixtures, thanks to a variety of secondary equilibria. This gives rise to several chromatographic modes, whose main features are outlined in this chapter. The effect of the mobile phase pH on the retention of ionizable compounds is described, together with the recommended experimental practice. The mechanism of adsorption of amphiphilic anions or cations on the stationary phase to attract analytes with opposite charge or suppress the silanol activity is discussed. Different reagents, suc…
Small angle scattering study of poly(methylmethacrylate)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) block co-polymer in aqueous solution
2005
A combined Small Angle X ray (SAXS) and Neutron (SANS) Scattering study of aqueous solutions of a symmetric block copolymer consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) moieties is presented. The polymer forms slightly polydisperse spherical micelles in a wide range of concentration (0.03 – 6.7 w/V) and temperature (20°C ≤ T ≤ 65°C). A good description of the SANS data is obtained using a polydisperse core-shell model with a structure factor for a modified hard sphere potential. By increasing the concentration at constant T we observed a decrease of the aggregation number and an increase of solvation of PEO groups in the shell, opposite to what happens by in…
