Detecting significant features in modeling microRNA-target interactions
2017
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules mediating the translational repression and degradation of target mRNAs in the cell. Mature miRNAs are used as a template by the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to recognize the complementary mRNAs to be regulated. Up to 60% of human genes are putative targets of one or more miRNAs. Several prediction tools are available to suggest putative miRNA targets, however, only a small part of the interaction pairs has been validated by experimental approaches. The analysis of the expression profile of the RNA fraction immunoprecipitated (IP) with the RISC proteins is an established method to detect which genes are actually regulated by the R…
A multichannel piezo driver for active mirrors in X-ray telescopes
2016
X-ray astronomy is gaining importance for studying X-ray space sources such as single and binary stars, neutron stars, supernovae and black holes. Due to atmospheric absorption, X-ray telescopes must operate in space on satellites. Among the causes limiting the resolution of modern telescopes are distortions in mirrors shape. An innovative approach for X-ray mirrors aims at correcting the shape errors by means of piezo-ceramic actuators glued to the back of the mirrors, thus creating an “active mirror”. In order to test the viability of shape correction, we fabricated [1] a prototype of a thin glass active mirror, sized 20 cm x 20 cm with a 400 um thickness (Fig. 1). The mirror can allocate…
In the paper we will describe three instruments of particular historical and didactic interest belonging to the Historical Collection of Physics Inst…
Motor simulation via coupled internal models using sequential Monte Carlo
2011
We describe a generative Bayesian model for action understanding in which inverse-forward internal model pairs are considered 'hypotheses' of plausible action goals that are explored in parallel via an approximate inference mechanism based on sequential Monte Carlo methods. The reenactment of internal model pairs can be considered a form of motor simulation, which supports both perceptual prediction and action understanding at the goal level. However, this procedure is generally considered to be computationally inefficient. We present a model that dynamically reallocates computational resources to more accurate internal models depending on both the available prior information and the predic…

2021
The transformation of Southern landscape after the construction of new infrastructures is a crucial theme in most techno-films released during the Italian economic miracle. Here, the traditional landscape is integrated with elements formerly unknown, giving birth to an original hybrid of technics and nature. This paper analyses the images of this rising “techno-landscape” by questioning the strategies that represent it as a form, as a point of view, and as an experience, thus making it a distinctive element of Italian modernity.
2016
The article presents the results of the study of Marvelous in the Occitan poem Sens e razos d’una escriptura. The poem opens with a translation in 2144 verses of the Evangelium Nicodemi; it then proceeds to relate the story of the Antichrist and a list of the Fifteen Signs which are to precede the Last Judgement. Beside an ‘objective marvelous’ (the so-called ‘Christian Marvelous’), basing on the investigation of the vocabulary the author identifies a form of ‘theatrical marvelous’, exemplified in the tales (miracula and exempla) embedded in the text. Therefore, the apocryphal source proves to be a great tool for new reflections on the medieval merveilleux.
2009
The Oulipian genre is characterized by the transgression of the canonical hierarchy of genres, imposing a set of constraints and writing techniques as the principles for the organization of the literary space. This hybrid generic "form", designated with the neologism "Oulipogenre", which subverts the traditional notion of genre. The Oulipogenre establishes a horizon of kinetic suspension, depriving the reader of identification and decodification of the genre. Founded on interpretative instability, George Perec's «53 jours» necessitates the acceptance of destabilization, of the cognitive "aberration" of the text.
