An ex vivo model of the rat trachea to study the effect of inhalable toxic compounds

1996

Different cell culture and organ systems are used to evaluate the physiological responses of the airways to the effects of carcinogenic [e.g., benzo(a)pyrene] and anticarcinogenic (e.g., retinoids) compounds on cellular growth and differentiation. However, in contrast to in vivo conditions dissociated epithelial cells or tracheal ring cultures are covered with medium. Therefore, we developed an ex vivo perfusion model enabling evaluation of morphology and metabolism of different compounds under near-physiological conditions. The trachea was surrounded with culture medium and perfused with air by means of a small animal respirator. To test the viability of the system under various experiment…

Leaf domatia in the section Alaternus (Miller) DC. of the genus Rhamnus (Rhamnaceae)

1993

Anatomical and morphological study of leaves from three species of Rhamnus (R. alaternus, R. myrtifolius and R. ludovici-salvatoris) which comprise the section Alaternus (Miller) DC. from the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands, have revealed the presence of domatia, which are macroscopic infundibuliform structures. Although not all the leaves of one single plant showed domatia, all the individuals of each species examined presented these structures.

Root canal morphology and configuration of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-CT.

2017

The aim of this study was to investigate the root canal configuration, accessory canals and number of main foramina of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-computed tomography. The teeth were scanned and reproduced with 3D software imaging. The root canal configuration and number of main foramina were evaluated by means of a four-digit system. The morphological complexity of human maxillary second molars is depicted by the number of accessory and connecting canals. The most frequently observed root canal configurations in the mesiobuccal root were 2-2-2/2 (19.5%), 2-2-1/1 (14.6%) and 2-1-1/1 (13.0%). A 1-1-1/1 configuration was observed in 93.5% and in 96.7% in the distobuccal and …

Analysis of radiologic factors in determining premolar root canal systems

2000

Abstract Objectives. Certain tooth groups pose problems as to radiologic determination of root canal morphology. For example, the premolars may have superimposed roots that give the appearance of a single canal when 2 are actually present. This study examined the effect of X-ray tube inclination so as to visualize the complete root canal system in premolars. Study Design. One hundred extracted premolars were divided into 4 groups of 25 teeth each: 1MxP (first maxillary premolar), 2MxP (second maxillary premolar), 1MdP (first mandibular premolar), and 2MdP (second mandibular premolar). A total of 10 radiographs were made of each tooth in the horizontal and vertical planes (horizontal angles …

Comparative Cytocompatibility and Mineralization Potential of Bio-C Sealer and TotalFill BC Sealer

2019

The aim of this study was to investigate the cytocompatibility and mineralization potential of two premixed hydraulic endodontic sealers compared with an epoxy resin-based root canal sealer. The cellular responses and mineralization capacity were studied in human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) that were exposed to premixed hydraulic sealers, Bio-C Sealer (Angelus, Londr&iacute

A contribution to the characterization of Ruppia drepanensis (Ruppiaceae), a key species of threatened Mediterranean wetlands

2021

To elucidate the taxonomic status of Ruppia drepanensis Tineo ex Guss. (Alismatales, Ruppiaceae), we performed morphological analysis and DNA barcoding of historical materials (including the lectotype) and fresh samples (including those from a recently discovered population near the locus classicus in Sicily, Italy). We conclude that R. drepanensis is a separate species, closely related to R. spiralis L. ex Dumort., that occurs in temporary inland waters from the western to central sectors of the Mediterranean region. We also highlight the importance of vouchers and the need to link molecular investigations to field, ecological, and morphological investigations.

Depletion of polyubiquitin encoded by the UBI4 gene confers pleiotropic phenotype to Candida albicans cells.

2003

We have studied the roles of polyubiquitin in Candida albicans physiology. Heterologous expression of the C. albicans polyubiquitin (UBI4) gene in a ubi4 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain suppressed the mutant phenotype (hypersensitivity to heat shock). A heterozygous strain UBI4/Deltaubi4::hisG, obtained following the ura-blaster procedure, was used to construct a conditional mutant using a pCaDis derivative plasmid. By serendipity we isolated the UBI4 conditional mutant as well as a UBI4 mutant containing a non-functional MET3 promoter. Depletion of polyubiquitin conferred pleiotropic effects to mutant cells: (i) a limited increased sensitivity to mild heat shock; (ii) increased formation o…

In Bone Tissue Engineering (BTE), autologous bone-regenerative cells are combined with a scaffold for large bone defect treatment (LBDT). Microporous, polylactic acid (PLA) scaffolds showed good healing results in small animals. However, transfer to large animal models is not easily achieved simply by upscaling the design. Increasing diffusion distances have a negative impact on cell survival and nutrition supply, leading to cell death and ultimately implant failure. Here, a novel scaffold architecture was designed to meet all requirements for an advanced bone substitute. Biofunctional, porous subunits in a load-bearing, compression-resistant frame structure characterize this approach. An o…

Endothelial cell colonization and angiogenic potential of combined nano- and micro-fibrous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

2008

Presently the majority of tissue engineering approaches aimed at regenerating bone relies only on postimplantation vascularization. Strategies that include seeding endothelial cells (ECs) on biomaterials and promoting their adhesion, migration and functionality might be a solution for the formation of vascularized bone. Nano/micro-fiber-combined scaffolds have an innovative structure, inspired by extracellular matrix (ECM) that combines a nano-network, aimed to promote cell adhesion, with a micro-fiber mesh that provides the mechanical support. In this work we addressed the influence of this nano-network on growth pattern, morphology, inflammatory expression profile, expression of structura…
