Effects of Exercise on the Airways
2012
In the last ten years, the effects of exercise on bronchial epithelial cells and inflammatory cells in the airways have been studied in detail, and such new information has been combined with previous knowledge on bronchial reactivity and asthma evoked by exercise in asthmatic patients and athletes. The resulting picture is very complex, and the potential clinical consequences are often contradictory, suggesting the opportunity to define different phenotypes of exercise-associated airway changes (Lee & Anderson, 1985; Haahtela et al., 2008; Moreira et al., 2011a). Studies in asthmatic athletes in the 90’ had began to explore the possibility that airway inflammation might be involved in exer…
Effects of low-gamma tACS on primary motor cortex in implicit motor learning
2019
Abstract In the primary motor cortex (M1), rhythmic activity in the gamma frequency band has been found during movement planning, onset and execution. Although the role of high-gamma oscillatory activity in M1 is well established, the contribution of low-gamma activity is still unexplored. In this study, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was used with the aim to specifically modulate low-gamma frequency band in M1, during an implicit motor learning task. A 40 Hz-tACS was applied over the left M1 while participants performed a serial reaction time task (SRTT) using their right hand. The task required the repetitive execution of sequential movements in response to sequences …
The role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in implicit procedural learning.
1996
We studied the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in procedural learning. Normal subjects completed several blocks of a serial reaction time task using only one hand without or with concurrent non-invasive repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. To disrupt their function transiently, stimulation was applied at low intensity over the supplementary motor area or over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex contralateral or ipsilateral to the hand used for the test. Stimulation to the contralateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex markedly impaired procedural implicit learning, as documented by the lack of significant change in response times during the task. Stimulation over the other …
Functional Role of Cerebellar Gamma Frequency in Motor Sequences Learning: a tACS Study
2021
Although the role of the cerebellum in motor sequences learning is widely established, the specific function of its gamma oscillatory activity still remains unclear. In the present study, gamma (50 Hz)—or delta (1 Hz)—transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was applied to the right cerebellar cortex while participants performed an implicit serial reaction time task (SRTT) with their right hand. The task required the execution of motor sequences simultaneously with the presentation of a series of visual stimuli. The same sequence was repeated across multiple task blocks (from blocks 2 to 5 and from blocks 7 to 8), whereas in other blocks, new/pseudorandom sequences were reproduce…
Parameter Identification of a Winding Function Based Model for Fault Detection of Induction Machines
2018
Prediction of machines' faulty parts is important in industrial applications in order to reduce productivity losses. As far as electrical machines are considered, a model-based fault diagnosis approach is usually used for this purpose. The model is derived from the modified winding function theory and hence, it requires a considerable amount of parameters at various operating conditions in order to be successfully used. However, the complete set of parameters is difficult to be obtained, as manufacturers of electric machines normally provide only the parameters that describe simple motor models (e.g. T-equivalent circuit at rated conditions). Therefore, the current work presents a method th…
Leisure-time physical activity for health promotion in elderly: initial evidence from the ‘‘Passiata Day’’ model
2018
Purpose: Falls prevention interventions are a priority for public health systems in order to reduce falls-related high costs. The University Hospital of Palermo promoted the ‘‘Passiata Day’’ model, an initiative of the Department of Geriatrics that provided a 1-h walk for once a week in a park of Palermo. It was guided by a graduate in physical education and a medical doctor. The aim of this study was to evaluate posturographic parameters in a sample of elderly including a group of subjects that had been walking regularly in the ‘‘Passiata Day’’ model for 6 months and a group of sedentary elderly subjects. Methods: A number of 109 older people were recruited at the University Hospital of Pa…
VALUTAZIONE DELLA DENSITÀ OSSEA DI UN CAMPIONE DI SOGGETTI PARAPLEGICI. RUOLO DEL DOTTORE IN SCIENZE MOTORIE NEL RECUPERO DELL’AUTONOMIA MOTORIA.
2008
2006
From a semantic point of view the word “ankle” and “ankle region” are not synonyms as “ankle” identifies all the components of the ankle joint while “ankle region” identifies the ankle joint as well as every structures in the region, form the surface level to the skeletal one. The articular system of the foot is formed by thirthyfour synovial joints, seventeen of which have complementary curvilinear articular surface, the remaning seventeen having plane joints. The rounded surface joints are: the talonavicular joint (a spheroidal joint that is part of the transverse tarsal joint), the “anatomical” subtalar joint ( a saddle joint), five ellipsoid (or condylar) joints and ten, ankle and inter…
Mobile Mapping System: case study of the Messina-Palermo motorway layout
2009
This paper presents the first results of the MMS (Mobile Mapping System) survey on the geometry of the A20 italian motorway Messina-Palermo. The layout parameters are the essential data for an effective management of a single or a road network. In particular these parameters are essential for applying the Design Consistency methodology to proposed or existing road infrastructures; through this methodology the road manager can make sure that the road characteristics are adjusted to the driving behaviour of motorists by analysing the relationship between horizontal and vertical alignment and the design and operating speed. Both the difficult finding of the road design schemes, particularly in…
Evaluation of motorway reliability based on the identification of spot speed stochastic processes. The case of A22 motorway, Italy
2012
The evaluation of motorway reliability is a subject of great interest for researchers of traffic engineering. For easy recognizable reasons, this subject is very important in theoretical studies and for applications, e.g. evaluation of capacity and traffic control on motorway. In this paper the different conceptions of reliability in technical and scientific literature are compared with the following definition: reliability of traffic stream, for a time interval T, is “the conditioned probability that level of speed spot process does not decrease during T as far as the section in which limit density is reached, given that the level at instant zero is equal to the average speed corresponding…
