Il volume raccoglie trenta saggi di Paolo Emilio Carapezza, apparsi tra il 1960 e il 2012 e raggruppati in quattro aree tematiche, a dar conto dell’ampiezza e della varietà dei suoi interessi. Tra gli innumerevoli scritti sono stati scelti quelli dedicati alla musica in Sicilia o di Sicilia, la quale sembra costituire non soltanto il centro topologico e storico, ma soprattutto il centro concettuale che irradia e rispecchia i percorsi intellettuali che innervano l’Europa, e in cui antichità, rinascimento e presente si intrecciano in un modo esemplare della simbiosi profonda tra arte e vita, cultura e natura, produzione “colta” e popolare.

The national identity of Slavic Mitteleuropa is examined by means of a new approach to different cultural paradigms, namely the historical events out of which the popular canon in music flourished at the end of eighteenth-century Poland and in nineteenth-century Bohemia, Slovenia and Croatia. This phenomenon must be analysed within a framework in which cosmopolitism and nationalism co-existed in a mix of functional and autonomous music, superseding the boundaries of subordination, adaptation and autonomy.
Intertestualità e parodia nella commedia per musica napoletana: il caso dell’"Armida immaginaria" di Giuseppe Palomba e Domenico Cimarosa (1777)

"Armida immaginaria" by Palomba and Cimarosa is tangled in a thick network of intertextual connections. Many are its references, partly known, to Tasso’s Gerusalemme. In addition, scene I.10 turns out to be an effective literary and musical parody of scene II.10 of "Armida abbandonata" by De Rogati and Jommelli. That imitation is the outcome of a strategy shared between the librettist, the composer and the singer (the buffo Antonio Casaccia) and implies the deliberate connivance of the audience, whose reactions may be partly retraced by comparison with similar episodes.

In so-called Spanish Italy, or the Italian territories subject to the Spanish rule (the State of Milan, the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the theater was often used in feast-day celebrations to underline the bond with the ruling nation, and to engender acclaim for the Spanish monarchy. Celebrations were an integral part of the complex web of political relationships. The Senate (civic government) of Palermo was throughout the seventeenth century paying for musicians performing in outdoor improvised venues on the feast days. The essay is an attempt to summarize the most up-to-date knowledge related to the history of the comic intermezzo. Some crucial examples of the Neapolitan scenic tradition are analyzed in order to highlight the progressive emancipation of comic scenes. An examination of the main dramatic and musical characteristics of the genre follows. The last part of the article concerns the European circulation of the Italian creations, with special attention to the famous "querelle des bouffons", which broke out in the mid-eighteenth century Paris following the performance of Giovambattista Pergolesi's "La serva padrona".

The aria "Misero pargoletto", sung by Timante in the third act of Pietro Metastasio's "Demofoonte", enjoyed exceptional fortune throughout the eighteenth century. The text was set tu music dozens of times not only as part of the opera it belongs to, but also as an independent piece. This essay discusses the judgements expressed on "Misero pargoletto" by several men of letters and theorists, examines some buffo parodies of the aria that demonstrate its wide notoriety, and formulates some hypotheses about the reasons for such a great success, which can be partially justified by the new conception of fatherood that emerged in the so-called Age of Sensibility.
