The magnesium global network (MaGNet) to promote research on magnesium in diseases focusing on covid-19
2021
When the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic began in early 2020, the global magnesium researcher community came together and noted the striking similarities between COVID-19 risk factors and conditions associated with magnesium deficit state in humans, reasoning that magnesium deficiency could worsen the course of COVID-19 [1-4]. This prompted establishment of a worldwide collaborative network with regular virtual meetings to brainstorm the associations between magnesium and COVID-19. We hypothesize that magnesium deficiency, a common but mostly unrecognized state in modern global societies, could be an important component of the susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Consequently, restoring the …
THERAPEUTIC EFFICACY OF MAGNESIUM VALPROATE IN SUCCINIC SEMIALDEHYDE DEHYDROGENASE DEFICIENCY
2012
Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD or gammahydroxybutyric aciduria), a disorder of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism, manifests as a slowly progressive or static encephalopathy. The latter encompasses prominent cognitive dysfunction, neuropsychiatric morbidity and epilepsy. We report safe and effective treatment with MgVPA in an adolescent female with SSADHD and seizures refractory to a broad spectrum of antiepileptics. MgVPA therapy (20 mg/Kg/day) was introduced at 7 years based upon behavioural difficulties and EEG alterations without adverse effects. Therapy was halted at age 13 years, and reintroduced at 14 years, due to new onset complex partial seizures. EEG dem…

Biochemical characteristics of the soluble organic matrix from the shell of three recent terebratulid brachiopod species.
2008
7 pages; International audience; To build their shells, brachiopods secrete a mixture of proteins and polysaccharides, collectively called the organic matrix. This matrix mediates the calcification process by allowing crystal nucleation followed by elongation and finally by stopping the crystal growth. Ultimately, the matrix controls the different microstructures formed. Brachiopod shells are composites with both organic and inorganic constituents intimately associated. This work represents an attempt to characterize the matrices using two combined approaches: (1) scanning electron microscopy for localization within the shell, (2) analysing extracted matrices at the molecular level to deter…
An Ion Exchange Membrane Crystallisation reactor for Magnesium recovery from brines
2015
CrIEM technology is a novel ion exchange application that allows reactive crystallization for separation of valuable species (e.g. Mg from brines) with a large flexibility in the choice of reactants.
Antifouling Mortars for Underwater Restoration
2022
This research has focused on the assessment of the compositional features and mechanical and antifouling performances of two different mortars formulated for an underwater setting, and which contain Mg(OH)2 as an antifouling agent. Regarding the mechanical characterization, the uniaxial compressive strength and flexural strength were measured. The composition of the materials was explored by differential thermal/thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TG), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRPD), and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) coupled with EDS microanalysis. The assessment of the biological colonization was evaluated with colorimetric analysis and image analysis. The results suggest that both m…
