Application of machine learning algorithms in thermal images for an automatic classification of lumbar sympathetic blocks

2023

Purpose There are no previous studies developing machine learning algorithms in the classification of lumbar sympathetic blocks (LSBs) performance using infrared thermography data. The objective was to assess the performance of different machine learning algorithms to classify LSBs carried out in patients diagnosed with lower limbs Complex Regional Pain Syndrome as successful or failed based on the evaluation of thermal predictors. Methods 66 LSBs previously performed and classified by the medical team were evaluated in 24 patients. 11 regions of interest on each plantar foot were selected within the thermal images acquired in the clinical setting. From every region of interest, different t…

HUMAN CERVICO-FACIAL ACTINOMYCOSIS: Actinomyces in chronic granulomatous disease, epidemiological and clinical comments

2022

In a retrospective investigation performed in the department of Surgical Odontostomatology of Palermo University Polyclinic from 2012 to 2021, the Author examined 10 cases of cervico-facial actinomycosis, taking into consideration age range, gender distribution, predisposing factors and symptoms. In concordance with reports in literature, she found that the disease was perimandibular in 65%; she also report the diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches used in the study

Psychometric Properties of the Scoliosis Research Society Questionnaire (Version 22r) Domains Among Adults With Spinal Deformity : A Rasch Measuremen…

2022

Objective: Adults with degenerative spinal deformity (ASD) have lower health-related quality of life (HRQL) compared to the general population. Applying Rasch Measurement Theory (RMT), this study tested the revised Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22r) HRQL instrument among symptomatic adult patients with degenerative spinal disorders and varying degrees of ASD. Methods: SRS-22r data from 637 outpatient spine clinic patients with degenerative spine conditions were investigated for unidimensionality, item/scale fit, differential item functioning (DIF), scale coverage/targeting, and person separation index (PSI) using RMT. Results: Unidimensionality of the SRS-22r was not supported for eith…

Sleep Disturbances in COPD are Associated with Heterogeneity of Airway Obstruction

2018

Individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) experience sleep disturbances due to the impact of respiratory symptoms on sleep quality. We explored whether sleep disturbances in COPD are linked to heterogeneity of airway constriction. The impact of breathing problems on sleep quality was measured in consecutive COPD outpatients with the COPD and Asthma Sleep Impact Scale (CASIS) questionnaire. Impulse oscillometry technique (IOS) was employed to assess heterogeneity of airway constriction. Subjects with a previous or concomitant diagnosis of asthma or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) were excluded.Fifty COPD subjects (M/F 40/10; age: 71 +/- 8 yrs, Body Mass Index (BMI): 26.2 +/-…

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients Treated With Continuous Positive Airway Pressure: Data From the European Sleep Apnea…

2021

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that resolves under treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). In some patients, sleepiness persists despite CPAP treatment. We retrospectively analyzed data on subjective residual EDS, assessed as an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score (ESS) >10, in patients from the European Sleep Apnea Database (n = 4,853, mean age +/- SD 54.8 +/- 11.8 years, 26.1% females), at baseline and at the first visit (median follow-up: 5 months, interquartile range 3-13). An ESS > 10 occurred in 56% of patients at baseline and in 28.2% of patients at follow-up. Residual EDS was analyzed in 2,190 patients (age: 55.1 +/- 12…

Potrzeba i możliwości budzenia nadziei u niedostosowanych społecznie w świetle koncepcji poznawczej

2014
