Chemistry of Desiccant Properties of Carbohydrate Polymers as Studied by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/ie302199k The combination frequency of water molecule in near-infrared spectroscopy is very useful for studying water molecular adsorption on solid surfaces. The absorption is purely from water molecules, and the variation in the absorption bands reflects the change in the environment of the water molecules on a surface. This variation, in turn, reflects the nature of the functional groups on the surface. Recently, Christy used this information in combination with second-derivative techniques to probe the surface of hydrothermally tre…
Screening pretreatment methods to enhance thermophilic anaerobic digestion of pulp and paper mill wastewater treatment secondary sludge
2013
Abstract The effect of hydrothermal (150 °C for 10 min and 70 °C for 40 min), enzymatic (Accelerase 1500, 0.07 g/g volatile solids (VS)), ultrasound (45 kHz for 30 min) and chemical pretreatments (HNO3 at pH 3 and NaOH at pH 12) alone or in combination on the chemical composition and methane yield of the pulp and paper mill secondary sludge was studied in batch assays at 55 °C. In total, 12 different pretreatment combinations were compared. Chemical analyses showed that all pretreatments except for HNO3 and ultrasound pretreatments improved the organic matter solubilization. Among the studied pretreatments, hydrothermal (150 °C, 10 min) pretreatment alone or in combination with enzymatic an…
EFFECT OF ULTRASOUND TREATMENT ON PROPERTIES OF GLUTEN-BASED FILM
2010
Abstract Gluten films obtained in acid conditions display some protein dispersion difficulties. Ultrasound treatment (UT) could represent an interesting strategy for improving gluten film appearance. Different UT exposure times were applied to film-forming dispersion. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of ultrasound treatment on gluten-based films at molecular and mesoscopic levels. Distribution in gliadin and glutenins was determined with SE-HPLC. The UT improved protein dispersion and final film appearance. Sonication did not lead to large changes in various gluten fractions, which suggests absence of important protein breakdown at the molecular level. Gluten showed high t…
Improvement of biphasic polymerization by application of binary ionic liquid mixture
2013
Abstract The mixture of two ionic liquids, 1- n -butyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloroaluminates, [C 4 -mim][AlCl 4 ] and [PhC 2 -mim][AlCl 4 ], were applied as a medium to immobilize the Cp 2 TiCl 2 titanocene catalyst for biphasic ionic liquid/hexane ethylene polymerization. The system makes possible to perform the reaction at lower temperatures, below the melting temperature of the aralkyl ionic liquid. A better separation of the ionic liquid phase was observed and an easier mass transfer of the polymer product from the ionic liquid to the hexane phase was obtained. The polyethylene reveals bimodal distribution of molecular weight. It is characterized…
Wood coated with plasma-polymer for water repellence
2008
The effects of cold HMDSO and HMDSO + SF6 plasma treatments on spruce, chestnut and poplar wood were investigated in order to obtain a hydrophobic surface evaluated by microscopic, spectroscopic (FT-IR and LIBS) and contact angle analyses. Cold plasma treatments can increase the surface hydro-repellence without modifying the external aspect and bulk properties of different woods.

A Non-Local Mode-I Cohesive Model for Ascending Thoracic Aorta Dissections (ATAD)
2018
This paper presents a non-local interface mechanical model to describe aortic dissection. In this regard, the mode-I debonding problem based on a cohesive zone modeling is endowed with non-local terms to include long-range interactions that are present in multi-layered biological tissue. Such non-local effects are related to the collagen fibers that transmit forces between non-adjacent elements. Numerical simulations are provided with different values of the non-local parameters in order to show the effect of the non-locality during the debonding processes.
A Methodology for Protection of Trees Against Lightning Strikes as a Measure to Prevent Fires and Loss of Human Life
2021
Some regions may be characterized by a very low annual lightning ground flash density, and yet lightning strikes seem to have been in those areas the cause of widespread wildfires in forested areas. Due to global climate change, these occurrences seem to be an increasing threat. In this paper, the authors discuss the withstand capability of trees against lightning and introduce the criteria for the deployment of tree lightning protection systems (TLPS) to protect forested areas, where deemed necessary by the tree risk assessment. This work analytically identifies the critical trunk radius of the tree below which the tree may explode in the case of a lightning strike and ignite the surroundi…
The on-demand warehousing problem
2022
Warehouses are key elements of supply chain networks, and great attention is paid to increase their efficiency. Highly volatile space requirements are enablers of innovative resource sharing concepts, where warehouse capacities are traded on online platforms. In this context, our paper introduces the on-demand warehousing problem from the perspective of platform providers. The objective prioritises demand–supply matching with maximisation of the number of transactions. If there is a tie, the secondary objective maximises the number of suppliers matched with at least one customer and the number of customers that have matches within a specific threshold with respect to the minimum achievable …
Advanced Composites and Applications: Book of abstracts
2023
The section ‘Advanced Composites and Applications’ was organized by the Institute for Mechanics of Materials of the University of Latvia (LU MMI) on 16.02.2023 as a part of the annual 81th scientific conference of the University of Latvia. It was organized remotely in Zoom. The official language of the section was English. The duration of the presentation was 10 minutes. The section was devoted to the discussion of the recent results within following topics: structure and properties of polymers and polymer-based composites, long-term properties, creep, and environmental ageing, composites for advanced applications, mechanical aspects of technology, and multifunctional properties.
