Measurement and Conservation of Species and Habitat Biodiversity at Different Scales on Small Mediterranean Islands
2021
In this paper we discuss current methodologies for measuring biodiversity, analyse pros and cons at different scales, and finally propose distribution mapping as the most suitable method for measuring floristic biodiversity on small Mediterranean islands. These territories often host endangered flora and habitats, and have peculiarities that distinguish them from the mainland and the larger islands.

Novel leaf-level measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence for photosynthetic efficiency
2015
Solar induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from vegetation can now be obtained from satellites as well as ground-based field studies, at select wavelengths associated with atmospheric features. At the leaf level, full spectrum (650–800 nm) chlorophyll emissions (ChlF) can be measured using specialized instrumentation to support interpretation of these SIF observations. We found that ChlF spectra differ for leaf bottoms versus upper leaf surfaces, potentially affecting within-canopy radiative scattering. Our ChlF measurements for leaves of eight tree species (n≥125) obtained during fall 2013 senescence at the Duke Forest in North Carolina, USA and the 2014 growing season (n=72) at the USDA…
Etalement urbain et consommation d'espace. Etude comparée de Besançon, Belfort et Montbéliard
2007
Urban sprawl constitutes a specific case of urbanization that is currently common in French cities. Arising from significant development of suburbs, it inevitably leads to the increase of built-up surfaces in every periurban area. At the same time, we can assume that urban sprawl induces over-consumption of space. This assumption is tested on the three main towns of Franche-Comté, that are associated with very different geographical, demographic and industrial characteristics (these characteristics are briefly described). The study confirms, in general, the reality of over-consumption of space, dependant on urban sprawl ; it seems generally independent of the individual characteristics of e…
Critical points of higher order for the normal map of immersions in Rd
2012
We study the critical points of the normal map v : NM -> Rk+n, where M is an immersed k-dimensional submanifold of Rk+n, NM is the normal bundle of M and v(m, u) = m + u if u is an element of NmM. Usually, the image of these critical points is called the focal set. However, in that set there is a subset where the focusing is highest, as happens in the case of curves in R-3 with the curve of the centers of spheres with contact of third order with the curve. We give a definition of r-critical points of a smooth map between manifolds, and apply it to study the 2 and 3-critical points of the normal map in general and the 2-critical points for the case k = n = 2 in detail. In the later case we a…
Monitoring of persistent organic pollutants in the polar regions: knowledge gaps & gluts through evidence mapping
2017
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are widespread compounds that accumulating in polar regions canalise through trophic webs. Although several dozens of studies have been carried out in the last decades, the information is generally scattered across a large number of literature sources. This does not allow an efficient synthesis and constraints our understanding on how address future monitoring plans and environmental conservation strategies on the Polar Regions with respect to POPs. Thus, here, we present the outcome of a systematic map (SM) to scope, screen and chart evidences from literature dealing with POPs in Polar regions. The SMs strive to produce rigorous guidelines and have rece…
Frame-based and frameless endoscopic procedures in the third ventricle.
1997
Stereotactic guidance is useful for planning an accurate trajectory to the third ventricle. A guiding block with a ball joint was developed for frame-based endoscopy and adaptors for arm-based and armless navigation systems. Between 1992 and 1996, 52 patients were operated on endoscopically in the third ventricle under stereotactic guidance. Thirty-eight ventriculostomies, 13 biopsies and 10 cystic lesions were performed. The coordinates of two points were calculated; one in the foramen of Monro and the second in the third ventricle. The ventriculostomy was performed under endoscopic control bluntly with a Fogarty catheter in front of the basilar artery. Twenty-seven (71%) of the patients h…
A Novel Approach to Propagation Pattern Analysis in Intracardiac Atrial Fibrillation Signals
2010
The purpose of this study is to investigate propagation patterns in intracardiac signals recorded during atrial fibrillation (AF) using an approach based on partial directed coherence (PDC), which evaluates directional coupling between multiple signals in the frequency domain. The PDC is evaluated at the dominant frequency of AF signals and tested for significance using a surrogate data procedure specifically designed to assess causality. For significantly coupled sites, the approach allows also to estimate the delay in propagation. The methods potential is illustrated with two simulation scenarios based on a detailed ionic model of the human atrial myocyte as well as with real data recordi…
Fuzzy fixed points of generalized F2-geraghty type fuzzy mappings and complementary results
2016
The aim of this paper is to introduce generalized F2-Geraghty type fuzzy mappings on a metric space for establishing the existence of fuzzy fixed points of such mappings. As an application of our result, we obtain the existence of common fuzzy fixed point for a generalized F2-Geraghty type fuzzy hybrid pair. These results unify, generalize and complement various known comparable results in the literature. An example and an application to theoretical computer science are presented to support the theory proved herein. Also, to suggest further research on fuzzy mappings, a Feng–Liu type theorem is proved.
Some new fixed point theorems in fuzzy metric spaces
2014
Motivated by Samet et al. [Nonlinear Anal., 75(4) (2012), 2154-2165], we introduce the notions of alpha-phi -fuzzy contractive mapping and beta-psi-fuzzy contractive mapping and prove two theorems which ensure the existence and uniqueness of a fixed point for these two types of mappings. The presented theorems extend, generalize and improve the corresponding results given in the literature.
