The economics of platform competition: compatibility, standardization and piracy

This thesis studies the platform competition with compatibility, standardization and piracy. In the first chapter we study the role played by expectations, the strength of the network externality and product differentiation in the strategic decisions of the platforms regarding compatibility and price competition. The decision problem is modeled as a two-stage game. In the first stage platforms simultaneously and non-cooperatively choose the degree of compatibility and in the second stage platforms compete in prices. STATE AID POLICY BETWEEN COMPETITION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: THE IMPACT OF STATE AID TO R&D ON GDP IN THE EU MEMBER STATES

The paper focuses on the analysis of the relationship between state aid to R&D and economic growth, measured by GDP level, providing empirical evidence of a correlation between these variables. Using a methodology which combines the regression technique and Granger causality, we found that GDP represents a significant causal determinant of state aid, while the correlation the variables considered is positive and statistically significant, suggesting that, in spite of disparities between Member States, government support through state aid to R&D has evolved from maintaining undistorted competition to the possibility to act as an incentive for the economic growth in the EU.

This thesis studies labor market matching and takes use of a matching function, which describes the technology how unemployed job seekers and vacant jobs search, meet and form new employment relationships. The goal of the study is twofold: First is to provide a comprehensive critical review of previous literature covering both micro models as well as empirical applications. Major limitations in empirical studies are imperfect measures of variables as well as inability to account for all relevant factors making results methodology-sensitive. Vascular structure of the earliest shark teeth

Here we use synchrotron tomography to characterise dental vasculature in the oldest known tooth-bearing sharks, Leonodus carlsi Mader, 1986 and Celtiberina maderi Wang, 1993. Three dimensional reconstruction of the vascular system and microstructure of both taxa revealed a complex and dense network of canals, including horizontal, ascending and secondary bifurcated canals, as well as histological features consistent with an osteodont histotype. Zbog rastuće globalne konkurencije među gradovima brending je od nedavno postao važan element gradskih strategija. Rad prikazuje kako dionici marke doživljavaju sportsku marku Jyväskyläe, grada srednje veličine u Finskoj. Autori su proveli dubinske intervjue s jedanaest gradskih dužnosnika i sportskih menadžera koji su utjecali na sportsku marku grada Jyväskyläe. Prema rezultatima istraživanja, ispitanici smatraju kako Jyväskylä ima snažan imidž grada sporta. On počiva na sportskom obrazovanju, sportskim događanjima, jakim sportskim klubovima i aktivnom građanstvu.
