Comparative assessment of spatial perception in augmented reality depending on the consistency of depth cues
2021
Discrepancies between depth cues (accommodation and vergence) is one of the major issues caused in a stereoscopic augmented reality at close viewing distances. It adversely affects not only user comfort but also spatial judgements. Images with consonant cues at different distances have become available due to the implementation of multifocal architecture in the head-mounted displays, although its effect on spatial perception has remained unknown. In this psychophysical study, we investigated the effects of consonant and conflicting depth cues on perceptual distance matching in the stereoscopic environment of augmented reality using a head-mounted display that was driven in two modes: multif…
Ontology-based state representations for intention recognition in human–robot collaborative environments
2013
In this paper, we describe a novel approach for representing state information for the purpose of intention recognition in cooperative human-robot environments. States are represented by a combination of spatial relationships in a Cartesian frame along with cardinal direction information. This approach is applied to a manufacturing kitting operation, where humans and robots are working together to develop kits. Based upon a set of predefined high-level state relationships that must be true for future actions to occur, a robot can use the detailed state information described in this paper to infer the probability of subsequent actions occurring. This would allow the robot to better help the …
Evaluation of an Optical Energy Harvester for SHM Application
2019
Abstract In this paper a preliminary study on an array configuration of rectified optical nanoantennas for energy harvesting application is proposed. Currently, the major impediments for the use of the rectified optical nanoantenna known as rectenna are the relatively low conversion efficiency and low power transfer to the load, both of them caused mainly by the mismatch between the impedance of the rectifier (several kilo ohms) and that of the antenna (hundreds of ohm). For this reason, the design of the array represents a crucial point to obtain the maximum energy transfer from the rectenna to the load, represented as a typical DC/DC boost power converter, and modeled by an equivalent inp…
ACCURATE DENSE STEREO MATCHING FOR ROAD SCENES
2017
International audience; Stereo matching task is the core of applications linked to the intelligent vehicles. In this paper, we present a new variant function of the Census Transform (CT) which is more robust against radiometric changes in real road scenes. We demonstrate that the proposed cost function outperforms the conventional cost functions using the KITTI benchmark. The cost aggregation method is also updated for taking into account the edge information. This enables to improve significantly the aggregated costs especially within homogenous regions. The Winner-Takes-All (WTA) strategy is used to compute disparity values. To further eliminate the remainder matching ambiguities , a post…
Indexing a sequence for mapping reads with a single mismatch
2014
Mapping reads against a genome sequence is an interesting and useful problem in computational molecular biology and bioinformatics. In this paper, we focus on the problem of indexing a sequence for mapping reads with a single mismatch. We first focus on a simpler problem where the length of the pattern is given beforehand during the data structure construction. This version of the problem is interesting in its own right in the context of the next generation sequencing. In the sequel, we show how to solve the more general problem. In both cases, our algorithm can construct an efficient data structure in time and space and can answer subsequent queries in time. Here, n is the length of the s…
Restoration and Enhancement of Historical Stereo Photos Through Optical Flow
2021
Restoration of digital visual media acquired from repositories of historical photographic and cinematographic material is of key importance for the preservation, study and transmission of the legacy of past cultures to the coming generations. In this paper, a fully automatic approach to the digital restoration of historical stereo photographs is proposed. The approach exploits the content redundancy in stereo pairs for detecting and fixing scratches, dust, dirt spots and many other defects in the original images, as well as improving contrast and illumination. This is done by estimating the optical flow between the images, and using it to register one view onto the other both geometrically …
Cognitive Mimetics for Designing Intelligent Technologies
2018
Design mimetics is an important method of creation in technology design. Here, we review design mimetics as a plausible approach to address the problem of how to design generally intelligent technology. We argue that design mimetics can be conceptually divided into three levels based on the source of imitation. Biomimetics focuses on the structural similarities between systems in nature and technical solutions for solving design problems. In robotics, the sensory-motor systems of humans and animals are a source of design solutions. At the highest level, we introduce the concept of cognitive mimetics, in which the source for imitation is human information processing. We review and discuss so…
Graph matching for efficient classifiers adaptation
2011
In this work we present an adaptation algorithm focused on the description of the measurement changes under different acquisition conditions. The adaptation is carried out by transforming the manifold in the first observation conditions into the corresponding manifold in the second. The eventually non-linear transform is based on vector quantization and graph matching. The transfer learning mapping is defined in an unsupervised manner. Once this mapping has been defined, the labeled samples in the first are projected into the second domain, thus allowing the application of any classifier in the transformed domain. Experiments on VHR series of images show the validity of the proposed method …
Multi-Dimensional Pattern Matching with Dimensional Wildcards: Data Structures and Optimal On-Line Search Algorithms
1997
We introduce a new multidimensional pattern matching problem that is a natural generalization of string matching, a well studied problem1. The motivation for its algorithmic study is mainly theoretical. LetA1:n1,?,1:nd be a text matrix withN=n1?ndentries andB1:m1,?,1:mr be a pattern matrix withM=m1?mrentries, whered?r?1 (the matrix entries are taken from an ordered alphabet ?). We study the problem of checking whether somer-dimensional submatrix ofAis equal toB(i.e., adecisionquery).Acan be preprocessed andBis given on-line. We define a new data structure for preprocessingAand propose CRCW-PRAM algorithms that build it inO(logN) time withN2/nmaxprocessors, wherenmax=max(n1,?,nd), such that …
Infliximab and newly diagnosed neoplasia in CD:a multicenter matched pair study
2006
Background and aims: The widespread use of anti-tumour necrosis factor α antibody (Infliximab) in Crohn's disease (CD) raises concerns about a possible cancer risk in the long term. In a matched pair study, we assessed whether Infliximab is associated with an increased risk of neoplasia. Methods: In a multicentre matched pair study, 404 CD patients treated with Infliximab (CD-IFX) were matched with 404 CD patients who had never received Infliximab (CD-C). Cases and controls were matched for sex, age (±5 years), site of CD, age at diagnosis (±5 years), immunosuppressant use, and follow up. New diagnoses of neoplasia from April 1999 to October 2004 were recorded. Results: Among the 404 CD-IFX…
