Greenhouse gas emissions from integrated urban drainage systems: where do we stand?

2017

Integrated urban drainage systems (IUDS) (i.e., sewer systems, wastewater treatment plants and receiving water bodies) contribute to climate change being sources of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). This paper, produced by the International Working Group on Data and Models, which works under the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, reviews the state-of-the-art and the recently developed modelling tools used to understand and manage GHG emissions from IUDS. Further, open problems and research gaps are discussed, while proposing a framework for handling GHG from IUDS. The literature review reveals that there is a need to strengthen and partially adequate already available mathematical mo…

THE IDENTIFIABILITY ANALYSIS FOR SETTING UP MEASURING CAMPAIGNS FOR INTEGRATED WATER QUALITY MODELLING

2010

Identifiability analysis enables one the quantification of the number of model parameters that can be assessed by calibration with respect to a data set. Such a methodology is based on the appraisal of sensitivity coefficients of the model parameters by means of Monte Carlo runs. By employing the Fisher Information Matrix, the methodology is able to gain insights with respect to the number of model parameters that can be reliably assessed. The paper presents a study where identifiability analysis is used as a tool for the setting up of measuring campaigns for integrated water quality modelling. The analysis has been applied to a real case study characterized by a partially urbanized catchme…

Urban Energy Hubs Economic Optimization and Environmental Comparison in Italy and Vietnam

2018

This paper aims to perform the minimization of the yearly energy supply cost from the main electricity and natural gas grids related to an energy district, considering the installation of different equipments. The case study refers to energy consumption of a medium density urban district and involves the exploitation of different energy sources and devices (photovoltaic systems, electrical energy storage, heat pumps and cogenerators). The analysis of the district energy supply is accomplished through an energy hub model. After a cost analysis related to the considered energy systems, a MILP algorithm was used for the optimization of a cost function and the simulation of various scenarios. M…

STUDIO DI UN AMMORTIZZATORE ELETTROMAGNETICO A RECUPERO DI ENERGIA

2013

Settore ING-IND/14 - Progettazione Meccanica E Costruzione Di MacchineMain objective of this work is the theoretical study and support of FEM software of a device that allows for energy recovery from an automotive suspension. In replacing the viscous damper which dissipates the kinetic energy of the vehicle due to rough roads or obstacles more marked an electromagnetic damper is used that performs the functions of the viscous damper allowing a recovery of electricity. The damper is of the electromagnetic type with permanent magnets and its operation is based on the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction. The mathematical model describes the operation of the damper restoring the values of the electrical and mechanical magnitudes as a function of the relative speed between the rod and the stator. Energy recovery has been estimated considering an electric minicar that transits on a bumpy road. The recovered power has a total value of about 250W.

Robust Discrete-Time Lateral Control of Racecars by Unknown Input Observers

2023

This brief addresses the robust lateral control problem for self-driving racecars. It proposes a discrete-time estimation and control solution consisting of a delayed unknown input-state observer (UIO) and a robust tracking controller. Based on a nominal vehicle model, describing its motion with respect to a generic desired trajectory and requiring no information about the surrounding environment, the observer reconstructs the total force disturbance signal, resulting from imperfect knowledge of the time-varying tire-road interface characteristics, presence of other vehicles nearby, wind gusts, and other model uncertainty. Then, the controller actively compensates the estimated force and as…

Biological Nutrient Removal Model No. 2 (BNRM2): a general model for wastewater treatment plants

2013

This paper presents the plant-wide model Biological Nutrient Removal Model No. 2 (BNRM2). Since nitrite was not considered in the BNRM1, and this previous model also failed to accurately simulate the anaerobic digestion because precipitation processes were not considered, an extension of BNRM1 has been developed. This extension comprises all the components and processes required to simulate nitrogen removal via nitrite and the formation of the solids most likely to precipitate in anaerobic digesters. The solids considered in BNRM2 are: struvite, amorphous calcium phosphate, hidroxyapatite, newberite, vivianite, strengite, variscite, and calcium carbonate. With regard to nitrogen removal via…

Linear stability analysis of gas-fluidized beds for the prediction of incipient bubbling conditions

2010

Abstract This work focuses on the development of a novel linear stability criterion for the state of homogeneous fluidization regime, based on a new mathematical model for gas-fluidized beds. The model is developed starting from the well-known particle bed model. A mono-dimensional momentum balance is derived leading to a set of equations which explicitly include voidage-gradient dependent terms (elastic force) for both solid and fluid phases. A fully predictive criterion for the stability of homogeneous fluidization state is here proposed, based on the well-known Wallis’ linear stability analysis. The criterion requires the choice of an appropriate averaging distance, which in the present …

A computational method to optimal control of a wind turbine system using wavelets

2011

Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the IEEE International Syposium on Computer-Aided Control System Design (2011). Also avaliable from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/CACSD.2011.6044551 This paper deals with a computational optimization approach to the problem of state-feedback control design for a wind turbine system. The first step of the study is to develop a reduced order model for the system by considering the most important physical phenomena of aerodynamics and structural dynamics. Moreover, the behavior of the system can be influenced by the coupled dynamics between the tower motions and the blade pitch and turbine speed which can cause instabiliti…

A mathematical model for wastewater modification processes assessment in a stabilization reservoir

2012

The paper presents a mathematical model for the simulation of the ecological status of a wastewater stabilization reservoir (WSR). WSRs are hypertrophic aquatic systems devoted to storage of water resources in warm countries where shortage conditions have quite often to be faced. Several factors that affect the stabilization reservoir effluent quality were taken into account: hydraulics and hydrology, solar radiation, atmospheric reaeration, algae, zooplankton, organic matter, pathogen bacteria, and sediment-water interaction. The model quantifies the specific influence of each factor on effluent quality, evaluating the correlation between the different considered factors. State variables i…
