he essay reconstructs the story linked to the foundation of the Real Casa dei Matti in Palermo, whose project was entrusted in 1824 to Baron Pietro Pisani. After a first part aimed at reconstructing Pisani's biographical profile and his role in the Bourbon administrative organization chart, a second part articulates the way in which ‘moral therapy’ was developed in Sicily. The present paper illustrates the results of a diagnostic investigation performed on the oil on canvas painting “The Glory of St. Barbara” (1680–1688) by Mattia Preti. The painting is located inside the St. Barbara Church in Taverna (Catanzaro, Italy), the city that gave birth to the artist. Two populations of Simethis mattiazzi (Xanthorrhoeaceae) were recently discovered in the Channel of Sicily – (1) Punta Bassana (Marettimo Island) and (2) Mount S. Giuliano (western Sicily) – at a considerable distance from the nearest stations hitherto known, located in southern Sardinia, the Pontine Islands Archipelago and Tunisia. The taxonomical and distributive aspects of this species are analysed to highlight the relictual and biogeographical significance of the disjointed and fragmentary nuclei distributed in several small islands of the Channel of Sicily, the Italian Peninsula and North Africa. Suomalaisten asuinkerrostalojen huoneistokohtaiset parvekkeet alkoivat yleistyä 1930-luvulla, kun arkkitehdit pyrkivät ratkaisuillaan hygieenisiin, valoisiin ja käytännöllisiin kerrostaloasuntoihin. 1940-luvulla sodat, taloudellinen tilanne ja pula rakennusmateriaaleista aiheuttivat tauon parvekkeiden rakentamisessa. Kuitenkin parvekkeet olivat olennainen osa kaupunkikuvaa ja lähes jokaista rakennettavaa kerrostaloasuntoa 1950-luvulle tultaessa. 1960-luvulla parvekerakentaminen jatkui ja yleistyi yhä edelleen, mutta niiden muoto, koko ja käyttötavat muuttuivat radikaalisti elementtirakentamiseen siirtymisen myötä.
