Integrated GNSS/IMU Hub Motion Estimator for Offshore Wind Turbine Blade Installation
2019
Abstract Offshore wind turbines (OWTs) have become increasingly popular for their ability to harvest clean offshore wind energy. Bottom-fixed foundations are the most used foundation type. Because of its large diameter, the foundation is sensitive to wave loads. For typical manually assisted blade-mating operations, the decision to perform the mating operation is based on the relative distance and velocity between the blade root center and the hub, and in accordance with the weather window. Hence, monitoring the hub real-time position and velocity is necessary, whether the blade installation is conducted manually or automatically. In this study, we design a hub motion estimation algorithm f…
Simulation Goals and Metrics Identification
2016
Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) is a very useful means for producing high quality models during simulation studies. When ABMS is part of a methodological ap- proach it becomes important to have a method for identifying the objectives of the simulation study in a disciplined fashion. In this work we propose a set of guidelines for properly capturing and representing the goals of the simulations and the metrics, allowing and evaluating the achievement of a simulation objective. We take inspiration from the goal-question-metric approach and with the aid of a specific problem formalization we are able to derive the right questions for relating simulation goals and metrics.
Mobile manipulator performance measurement towards manufacturing assembly tasks
2016
Mobile manipulator performance measurement research is relatively minimal as compared to that of robot arms. Measurement methods, such as optical tracking systems, are useful for measuring the performance of mobile manipulators, although at a much higher relative cost as compared to artifacts. The concept of using test artifacts demonstrates to potential manufacturers and users of mobile manipulator systems that relatively low cost performance measurement methods exist. This paper discusses the concept of reconfigurable mobile manipulator artifacts that were designed and built. An artifact was then used through experimentation to measure the performance of a mobile manipulator to demonstrat…
Process mechanics in Friction Stir Extrusion of magnesium alloys chips through experiments and numerical simulation
2017
Abstract Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE) is a novel process designed to directly recycle machining chips. An experimental campaign was carried out on AZ31 milling chips using variations in extrusion ratio, force and tool rotation rate. The process mechanics were studied and correlated to the material flow, which was elucidated through use of a copper marker. A 3D, Lagrangian, thermo-mechanically coupled dedicated numerical model was set up and validated through temperature measurements. The combination of experimental and numerical results permitted to reconstruct the complex 3D material flow induced by tool rotation and plunge into the extrusion billet chamber.
Real time UAV altitude, attitude and motion estimation from hybrid stereovision
2012
International audience; Knowledge of altitude, attitude and motion is essential for an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle during crit- ical maneuvers such as landing and take-off. In this paper we present a hybrid stereoscopic rig composed of a fisheye and a perspective camera for vision-based navigation. In contrast to classical stereoscopic systems based on feature matching, we propose methods which avoid matching between hybrid views. A plane-sweeping approach is proposed for estimating altitude and de- tecting the ground plane. Rotation and translation are then estimated by decoupling: the fisheye camera con- tributes to evaluating attitude, while the perspective camera contributes to estimating t…
Using infrared thermography in order to compare laser and hybrid (laser plus MIG) welding processes
2009
International audience; In order to deepen the understanding of the differences between laser and laser-arc hybrid welding, comparisons were undertaken using thermography. The experiments were carried out for a T assembly of aluminium alloy plates. Modelling, based on the finite element method approach, was realized using IR temperature measurements and seam geometry. For a value of the power supply, depicted as a surface source in the hybrid case, agreement was found between simulated and measured temperatures. The arc power supply efficiency value is similar to the usually used value.
A numerical model for Wire integrity prediction in Friction Stir Extrusion of magnesium alloys
2017
Abstract A numerical model for the prediction of the wire quality produced by the novel direct machining chip recycling technique known as Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE) is presented. Wire microstructure and wire integrity have been predicted by embedding in the code the equations enabling the calculation of the Zener-Hollomon parameter as well as the W parameter of the Pivnik-Plata solid bonding criterion. The proposed model, developed for the AZ31 magnesium alloy using the commercial simulation package DEFORM, is 3D Lagrangian, thermo-mechanically coupled with visco-plastic material behavior. The model was first validated against experimental temperature measurements and then used to predi…
An intelligent Proportional controller of a Seeded Batch Crystallizer
2020
Crystallization process is used in a very wide range of industrial applications. However, highly nonlinear comportment of such process and the difficulties of characterizing several phenomenological effects makes difficult to find suitable operational procedures for producing required products. In this article, we use a model-free control (MFC) for controlling the mean size of crystals produced by seeded batch cooling crystallization. The MFC method is distinguished notably in terms of the modeling strategy. Rather than developing a crystallization model within the classic population balance equation (PBE) together with the mass balance and the energy balance, as is usually done, we use a l…
Time-varying Sampled-data Observer with Asynchronous Measurements
2019
International audience; In this paper a time-varying observer for a linear continuous-time plant with asynchronous sampled measurements is proposed. The observer is contextualized in the hybrid systems framework providing an elegant setting for the proposed solution. In particular some theoretical tools are provided, in terms of LMIs, certifying asymptotic stability of a certain compact set where the estimation error is zero. We consider sampled asynchronous measurements that occur at arbitrary times in a certain window with an upper and lower bound. The design procedure, that we propose for the selection of the time-varying gain, is based on a constructive algorithm that is guaranteed to f…
State Observer with Round-Robin Aperiodic Sampled Measurements with Jitter
2021
International audience; A sampled-data observer is proposed for linear continuous-time systems whose outputs are sequentially sampled via non-uniform sampling intervals repeating a prescribed Round-Robin sequence. With constant sampling intervals (jitter-free case) we provide constructive necessary and sufficient conditions for the design of an asymptotic continuous-discrete observer whose estimation error is input-to-state stable (ISS) from process disturbances and measurement noise. We use a time-varying gain depending on the elapsed time since the last measurement. With non-constant sampling intervals (jitter-tolerant case), our design conditions are only sufficient. A suspension system …
