[Prevalence of pericardial effusion in subjects with rheumatoid arthritis: an echocardiographic study].

1994

We used echocardiography to determine the prevalence of pericardial effusion in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients without cardiac systems and compared our results to those obtained in a control group of age-matched subjects. Thirty-six patients with RA (6 men, 30 women; mean age 51 +/- 11 years) were selected from a patient population in treatment at our outpatient Rheumatology Clinic. None of the patients had any symptoms of cardiac disease, and all patients with signs and/or systems of extracardiac disease were excluded from the study. The control group consisted of 60 volunteers (mean age 51 +/- 12 years) randomly selected from a larger group of subjects with neither symptoms, signs and…

Hemostatic function in young subjects with central obesity: relationship with left ventricular function.

1995

This study was designed to evaluate coagulation and fibrinolysis activity and their relationship with left ventricular function in young obese subjects with central fat distribution. We assessed coagulation and fibrinolysis activity by evaluation of factor VII activity, fibrinogen and plasminogen, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI), and tissue plasminogen activator antigen basally (tPA1) and after venous occlusion (tPA2). These measures were evaluated in young (< 40 years) obese subjects with central fat distribution (n = 19) and in comparable lean subjects (n = 20). Blood glucose, triglycerides, total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein (apo) A1 and apo B, fas…

Prediction of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus based on a twenty-year follow-up of the Ventimiglia heart study.

2011

A novel algorithm to predict incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (iT2DM) is presented considering data from a 20-year prospective study in a Southern Italy population. Eight hundred and fifty-eight out of 1,351 subjects (24-85 years range of age) were selected. Incident type 2 diabetes was diagnosed in 103 patients in a 20-year follow-up. The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) and the Framingham Offspring Study simple clinical model (FOS) have been used as reference algorithms. Two custom algorithms have been created using Cox parametric hazard models followed by PROBIT analyses: the first one (VHSRISK) includes all the study subjects and the second one (VHS95RISK) evaluates separately su…

Sympathovagal balance and 1-h postload plasma glucose in normoglucose tolerant hypertensive patients.

2015

AIMS: Normoglucose tolerant (NGT) subjects with a 1-h postload plasma glucose (PLPG) value ≥155 mg/dL have an increased risk of type-2 diabetes and subclinical organ damage. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects cardiac autonomic balance, frequently impaired in course of diabetes. At this time, no data support the association between 1-h PLPG and HRV; thus, we investigated the possible association between 1-h PLPG and HRV. METHODS: We enrolled 92 never-treated hypertensive subjects (56 women, 36 men), aged 55 ± 9.8 years. During OGTT, the patients underwent electrocardiographic recordings to evaluate HRV in the time domain (SDNN). Insulin sensitivity was assessed by Matsuda index. RESULTS: …

Salt-regulating hormones in young normotensive obese subjects. Effects of saline load.

1994

To investigate whether the response of salt-regulating hormones to volume expansion is impaired in obese subjects, we assessed the effects of saline load (0.25 mL/kg.min.120 min) in 9 young, healthy, normotensive obese subjects (body mass index, > 30 kg/m2) and in 10 lean control subjects (body mass index, < 25 kg/m2) matched for age, gender, height, and mean blood pressure. Hematocrit, plasma renin activity (PRA), plasma aldosterone (PA), atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), and urinary sodium excretion (UNaV) were evaluated. Saline load increased ANF levels significantly (P < .001) in lean subjects at both 60 and 120 minutes, whereas they decreased in obese subjects. Such decreases b…

Behavior of the total antioxidant status in a group of subjects with metabolic syndrome.

2014

AIM: Our purpose was to examine the total antioxidant status (TAS) in subjects with metabolic syndrome (MS) subdivided according to the presence or not of diabetes mellitus. METHODS: We enrolled 106 subjects (45 women, 61 men) with MS subsequently subdivided in diabetics (14 women, 29 men) and nondiabetics (31 women, 29 men). TAS was obtained using an Assay kit which relies on the ability of plasma antioxidant substances to inhibit the oxidation of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline sulfonic acid) to the radical ABTS+. RESULTS: In the group of MS subjects a significant decrease in TAS (p<0.05) in comparison with normal controls was evident. This difference was present between normal subje…

Emergence of ovulatory cycles with aging in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) alters the trajectory of cardiovascular and metabolic risk fa…

2013

Abstract STUDY QUESTION: What alters cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors with aging in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Lipid parameters, mainly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, increase with aging, but not in women who attain ovulatory cycles. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Cardiovascular and metabolic parameters tend to increase with aging, but this has not been shown in a prospective longitudinal study in women with PCOS. Correlates of these changes have not been identified. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort of 118 hyperandrogenic women with PCOS who were followed from the age of 20-25 years at 5 year intervals for 20 years. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SE…

[Cardiovascular response to sympathetic stimulation in normal subjects with or without familial hypertension].

1990

The aim of our study was to seek out a possible different reactiveness to cardiovascular stimulation tests among normotensives with and without positive family history of essential hypertension. We have studied about 200 inhabitants of Ustica and 49 medicine students, all normotensives according to the World Health Organization and the Joint National Committee criteria. In an isolated room and in a supine position, blood pressure (BP) and heart rate were measured every 30 s for 15 min with an automatic sphygmomanometer. Averages of last 4 measurements were considered baseline values. Then we have carried out mental stress (MS), handgrip and active orthostatism test (AO) in the inhabitants o…

Habitual fish intake and clinically silent carotid atherosclerosis

2014

Background: Fish consumption is recommended as part of a healthy diet. However, there is a paucity of data concerning the relation between fish consumption and carotid atherosclerosis. We investigated the association between habitual fish consumption and asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, defined as the presence of plaques and/or increased intima-media thickness (≥ 0.90 mm), in non-diabetic participants. Methods: Nine hundred-sixty-one (range of age: 18–89 yrs; 37.1% males) adult participants without clinically known atherosclerotic disease were randomly recruited among the customers of a shopping mall in Palermo, Italy, and cross-sectionally investigated. Each participant answered a foo…

Early carotid atherosclerosis and cardiac diastolic abnormalities in hypertensive subjects

2004

Despite the fact that it is known that hypertension may be associated to early atherosclerosis manifestations, few data are to date available on the relationship between early carotid abnormalities and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. To address this issue, 142 hypertensive patients (64 females and 78 males) younger than 55 years, at the first diagnosis of mild-to-moderate essential hypertension (WHO/ISH criteria), were selected from a database consisting of 3541 subjects referred to ultrasound cardiovascular laboratory in the last 5 years. Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was detected by high-resolution vascular ultrasound and left ventricular structure and function by the use o…
