Helminth Infection of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta caretta along the Coasts of Sicily and the North West Adriatic Sea

We provide new data on the presence of helminth parasites in 64 individual loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta stranded along the coasts of Sicily and the northwest Adriatic Sea between June 2014 and August 2016. The necropsy examination revealed 31 individuals (48.4%) positive for endoparasites, showing a greater prevalence of trematodes than nematodes. In particular, seven species and a single genus of Trematoda (Hapalotrema) and a single species and genus of Nematoda (Kathlania) were identified. Among the Digenea flukes the species with the highest prevalence of infection were Rhytidodes gelatinosus (34.6%) and Hapalotrema sp. (33.3%), while among the Nematoda they were Kathlania sp. …

Pyrus pedrottiana (Rosaceae), a new species from the Nebrodi Mountains (N-E Sicily)

A new species of Pyrus for the dendroflora of Sicily is here described. It is Pyrus pedrottiana, actually considered endemic to the Nebrodi Mountains, a territory which includes the largest wooded area of the island with a high forest biodiversity.In the same area, P. vallis-demonis and P. ciancioi have also been described in recent times. The authors report diagnostic characters to distinguish the new taxon from the other two sympatric species.

Vermetid reef can be considered a key intertidal habitat of Mediterranean Sea and increasing knowledge about this natural system is important for its conservation. The observations of the Eurasian spoonbill made in Sicily between 1972 and 2018 were collected and analyzed. The presences, initially scarce and referred to a few sites, have consolidated over time, and gradually have affected an increasing number of sites. The observations were concentrated in the coastal salt pans and exsalt pans systems, secondarily in the mouths and in inland waters, below 100 m a.s.l.. The greatest number of Eurasian spoonbill was found in the migration period, both post and pre-reproductive; in the summer the lowest values. Dopo una premessa sui committenti, si indagano i più rappresentativi simulacri lignei del XVIII secolo della Sicilia occidentale. Le statue sono state eseguite, secondo la pertinente temperie culturale, da scultori locali, talvolta ignari dei tratti innovativi del tempo, che hanno reiterato stilemi dei secoli precedenti. Tra gli artisti con bottega a Palermo, aggiornati alle più moderne istanze, si annoverano Barcellona, Quattrocchi e Valenza.
