International audience; We report on a laser based $^{199}$Hg co-magnetometer deployed in an experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron. We demonstrate a more than five times increased signal to-noise-ratio in a direct comparison measurement with its $^{204}$Hg discharge bulb-based predecessor. An improved data model for the extraction of important system parameters such as the degrees of absorption and polarization is derived. Constant-potential electrolysis: determination of diffusion coefficients of thallium by using a hanging mercury drop electrode.

The technique of constant-potential electrolysis at a stationary spherical electrode (hanging mercury drop) was investigated for the determination of the diffusion coefficient of Tl(I) in sodium citrate-sodium hydroxide medium and of Tl in mercury. Current-time curves, at controlled potential, were obtained, covering periods from 1 to 25 sec after the start of the electrolysis. The influence of applied potential, time of electrolysis, convection and shielding of the electrode was studied.

Blackfly Larvae (Simulium spp.) Can Intensify Methylmercury Biomagnification in Boreal Food Webs

AbstractGlobal pollution of mercury (Hg) threatens ecosystem and human health. We measured total Hg (THg) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) concentrations in filter-feeding blackfly (Simulium spp.) larvae in the inflows and the outflows of six boreal lakes with no Hg point source pollution. THg in the larvae ranged from 0.03 to 0.31 mg kg−1 dw and MMHg between 0.02 and 0.25 mg kg−1 dw. The proportion of MMHg in the larvae was 74 ± 0.16% and ranged from 43 to 98% of THg, the highest proportions being comparable to those typically found in aquatic predatory insects and fish. Mercury levels in sediments of central Mediterranean Sea: a 150+ year record from box-cores recovered in the Strait of Sicily.

To evaluate the degree of anthropogenic mercury pollution, Hg contents have been measured for box-core sediments sampled along three nearshore-offshore transects in the Strait of Sicily and well constrained for their mineralogy, bulk geochemistry and TOC%. Hg values are generally low (from 15 to 70 microg kg(-1)); however, depth profiles clearly display upcore rising concentrations (up to 202 microg kg(-1) near the SE Sicily coast) that are attributed to anthropogenic load. The polarographic reduction of low molecular and high molecular N-chlorocarboxamides at the dropping mercury electrode proceeds in two one-electron-transfer steps, which are highly irreversible. In the case of the low molecular models 1 and 2 the reaction is diffusion-controlled, whereas in the case of the poly(N-chloroamide) 3 the reaction is adsorption-controlled. Reduction of several poly(N-chloroamide)s shows always two reduction waves with a distance of 0,5 V. There is, however, no relation between the polyamide-type and the position of the half-wave potentials. Trace elements and stable isotopes in penguin chicks and eggs: A baseline for monitoring the Ross Sea MPA and trophic transfer studies.

Multi-tissue trace elements (TEs), C, N concentrations and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) of chick carcasses and eggs of Adelie and Emperor penguins were studied to i) provide reference data before the recent institution of the Ross Sea Marine Protected Area (Antarctica), and ii) provide conversion factors that allow estimating C, N, δ13C and δ15N in edible tissues from non-edible ones, thus improving the use of stable isotopes in contamination and trophic transfer studies.
