Composing a piece : the birthing of "Self-Actualize"
2013
Valmiit teokset ovat olleet pitkään säveltämisen tutkimuksen keskiössä. Sävellysprosessia ei voi ymmärtää sitä epäsuorasti tutkimalla. Ensi käden tieto säveltäjiltä on vähäistä. Tutkielman tekijän tarkoituksena oli tarkastella säveltämänsä "Self-Actualize" -metallimusiikkiteoksen sävellysprosessia ymmärtääkseen tapaansa työskennellä. Laadittu kronologinen narratiivi perustuu dokumentaatiolle prosessista, johon sisältyy päiväkirjamerkintöjä ja äänitiedostoja. Narratiivia tulkittiin laadullisesti. Narratiivia seurasi sävellysprosessin yhteenveto ja sen pohdiskelu. Selvä intentio ja tavoitteiden asetus olivat prosessin keskeisiä tekijöitä. Niiden merkittävyys tuli esille myös muiden säveltäjie…
Active lighting applied to three dimensional reconstruction of specular metallic surfaces by polarization imaging
2005
This thesis deals with a new automated tridimensional inspection system for specular metallic surfaces, based on polarization analysis. We first present an extension of the ‘Shape from Polarization' method for dielectric to metallic surfaces. After being reflected, an unpolarized light wave becomes partially linearly polarized, depending on the surface normal and on the refractive index of the media it impinges on. Hence, by measuring the polarization parameters of the reflected light, the surface normals are computed. The ambiguity concerning the normals orientation is solved here with a new active lighting system. Then, we describe and compare numerical methods for reconstructing the trid…
Scanning Tunneling Spectroscope Use in Electrocatalysis Testing
2010
Published version of an article from the journal: Materials (1996-1944). Also available from publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/ma3063675 The relationship between the electrocatalytic properties of an electrode and its ability to transfer electrons between the electrode and a metallic tip in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is investigated. The alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was used as a test reaction with four different metallic glasses, Ni78Si8B14, Ni70Mo20Si5B5, Ni58Co20Si10B12, and Ni25Co50Si15B10, as electrodes. The electrocatalytic properties of the electrodes were determined. The electrode surfaces were then investigated with an STM. A clear relationship between the…

Epistemic, interpersonal, and moral stances in the construction of us and them in Christian metal lyrics
2011
Religious groupings and subcultures both tend to have well-articulated interests, aims, and values that unite certain people but also alienate those who do not share their interests. The case is then made for the construction of difference between 'us' and 'them'. This paper examines the construction of such a group boundary in the previously little studied context of the Christian metal (CM) music subculture. The focus of analysis is on the kinds of stances that are taken and attributed to 'us' and 'them' in the English lyrics of Finnish CM groups. The particular types of stance are related to questions of epistemology, interpersonality, and morality. The paper shows that the borderlines b…
