Ra223 in bone metastases with osteolytic activity

2018

Radium 223 dichloride (Ra223) is the only targeted alpha therapy able to extend survival in patients with bone metastases from prostate cancer. Mechanism of action and data currently available focused mainly on osteoblastic metastases from prostate cancer. In our institution, a patient with breast cancer affected by osteolytic metastases was treated with off-label use of Ra223. The evaluation of the deposit areas of Ra223 showed a perfect overlap with the regions of osteolysis previously detected by scintigraphy, indicating a possible therapeutic effect. This case report is the first document attesting Ra223 deposit in osteolytic metastases opening new opportunity of therapeutic development…

Electrochemotherapy for advanced cutaneous angiosarcoma: A European register-based cohort study from the International Network for Sharing Practices …

2019

Abstract Background Cutaneous angiosarcoma (cAS) is a highly aggressive malignancy that challenges the radicality of surgical treatment. Electrochemotherapy (ECT), a skin-directed treatment based on cytotoxic chemotherapy combined with local electric pulses, may be an intraoperative adjunct and a new opportunity in the therapeutic strategy. This cohort study reports the experience with ECT as an option. Methods Data on patients with locally-advanced/metastatic cAS who underwent ECT between October 2013 and October 2018 at eight European centres were prospectively submitted to the InspECT (International network for sharing practices of ECT) register. Patients received therapy according to th…

Metabolic impact of Partial Volume Correction of [18F]FDG PET-CT oncological studies on the assessment of tumor response to treatment

2014

AIM: The aim of this work is to evaluate the metabolic impact of Partial Volume Correction (PVC) on the measurement of the Standard Uptake Value (SUV) from [18F]FDG PET-CT oncological studies for treatment monitoring purpose. METHODS: Twenty-nine breast cancer patients with bone lesions (42 lesions in total) underwent [18F]FDG PET-CT studies after surgical resection of breast cancer primitives, and before (PET-I) and after (PET-II) chemotherapy and hormone treatment. PVC of bone lesion uptake was performed on the two [18F]FDG PET-CT studies, using a method based on Recovery Coefficients (RC) and on an automatic measurement of lesion metabolic volume. Body-weight average SUV was calculated f…

EFFICACY OF ZOLEDRONIC ACID IN PATIENTS WITH RENAL CANCER METASTATIC TO BONE

2011

I in renal cancer patients probably related to survival increase. There are few data in literature about the role of BPs in the treat- ment of bone disease from colorectal cancer. We present the pre- liminary data of a large Italian multicenter retrospective analysis. Methods. 284 renal cancer patients with evidence of bone metastases have been included in the study at the moment of ab- stract submission. Patients characteristics, skeletal related events (SRE) data and median survival after bone metastases appear- ance have been collected in a master data base and statistically analyzed. The primary efficacy endpoint was time to first SRE; secondary endpoint was median survival. Results. A …

Thyroid metastases from renal cell carcinoma. Report of a case and review of the literature

2018

Metastases to thyroid gland are a rare occurrence in surgical practice. The most frequent primitive tumor is renal cell carcinoma. We report a case of thyroid metastasis from renal cell carcinoma in a 70-year-old man who underwent left nephrectomy ten years earlier, presented with a diagnosis of multinodular goiter, associated with thyroiditis and right laterocervical lymphadenopathy. A total and the surgical excision of laterocervical lymph node were performed. The results, according to the histological examination, were metastases from renal cell carcinoma, involving both the thyroid gland and the lymph node. Therefore, since the delay of presentation and the difficulties of diagnosis, we…

RECURRENT RENAL CARCINOMA MIMICKING A GOITRE: A CASE REPORT

2013

Although the thyroid is a high vascularised gland, it is not common terget of metastases from extraglandular cancer. We reported a case of a 70 year-old woman who underwnt total thyroidectomy for multinodular goitre. In the patient's clinical hystory a nephrectomy was carried out 2 years before due to unspecified causes. The histopathological examination of the thyiroid showed a pattern compatible with clear cell renal carcinoma metastasis. The patient's relatives revealed, when questioned again, that the nephrectomy was due to the presence of a clear renal cell carcinoma keep concealed to the patients. Thanks to a timely intervention, the mass was removed and a better survival was guarante…

CONGENITAL NEUROBLASTOMA: A RARE CASE OF PLURIVISCERAL METASTATIC DISSEMINATION

2021

Neuroblastoma is one of the most common neonatal tumors. It involves children in early infancy and originates from neural crest cells of the adrenal gland medulla or sympathetic glia. We report an unusual case of congenital poorly differentiated neuroblastoma with multiple metastases in the brain and cerebellum. The biophysical profile showed a prominent polyhydramnios at 25.3 weeks of gestation; meantime, the mother was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The mass was detected during the third ultrasonographic examination at 31.4 weeks of gestation. The fetus lived only one day after birth and the postmortem examinations were performed subsequently. An autopsy was performed both to unders…

Effectiveness of clinical and instrumental follow-up for cutaneous melanoma

2022

Introduction: Follow-up guidelines for melanoma greatly differ in the methods of screening for recurrence, and timing and duration of the follow up, with many areas of controversy and a lack of general consensus. The aims of this study are to present our protocol and case series for follow up and to summarize and discuss current literature on melanoma follow-up guidelines/recommendations in different countries. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 539 patients operated for melanoma between 2004 and 2013 at the same Institution. Data on the diagnostic role of the different clinical and instrumental detection methods were adjusted for sex, age at diagnosis, staging and evaluated by Fisher's e…

Solitary Necrotic Nodule of the Liver: Different Pathological Findings Express a Different Histogenesis

2008

Solitary necrotic nodule of the liver is a rare benign lesion the histogenesis of which is still debated. We here report the case of a patient who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones and who was accidentally found to have a solitary necrotic nodule of 2 cm in the fifth segment of the liver. On the basis of the histological findings, the hypothesis that different pathogenetic mechanisms could be involved in the histogenesis of this lesion is discussed.
