STUDY ON CONVERSION OF ENCAPSULATED VITRO-DERIVED PROPAGULES OF 'C35' CITRANGE [C. SINENSIS (L.) OSB. × P. TRIFOLIATE (L.) RAF.]
2015
Fight against Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) implies the use of CTV-resistant rootstocks, such as citranges [C. Sinensis (L.) Osb. × P. Trifoliata (L.) Raf.]. The 'C35' represents a promising tolerant to CTV genotype. The employment of innovative in vitro techniques, such as encapsulation, could open new perspectives for this genotype propagation, particularly in the nursery activity. Preliminary experiments on calcium-alginate encapsulation of microcuttings (unipolar propagules) have already been performed to evaluate the use of tissue culture for the propagation and the preservation of different citrange rootstocks: Carrizo and Troyer. In the present study, the influence of different types a…
Long-Term Field Evaluation of Conventional vs. Micropropagated Plants of Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium
2022
Pyrethrum is a perennial herbaceous plant endemic to the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, and introduced in large areas of nearly all continents, where it is cultivated for the industrial extraction of pyrethrins. Pyrethrins are a group of six closely related monoterpene esters, widely used as natural insecticides. The world production of natural pyrethrins is lower than the market demand, and a wider introduction of this crop within the Mediterranean agrosystems could be an appealing opportunity for farmers and manufacturers. The availability of adequate amounts of selected plant material to bring into cultivation is, however, one of the major issues. Therefore, the in vitro propagation …
Is It Possible to Produce Certified Hazelnut Plant Material in Sicily? Identification and Recovery of Nebrodi Genetic Resources, in vitro Establishme…

Eight Sicilian cultivars of hazelnut (Corylus avellanaL.), namely-Curcia, Nociara Collica, Panottara Collica, Panottara Galati Grande, Parrinara, Panottara Baratta Piccola, Enzo, and Rossa Galvagno, registered into the Italian Cultivar Register of fruit tree species in 2017 were selected from Nebrodi area and establishedin vitro. The aim of the work was to carry out the sanitation of the cultivars and get virus-free plants from the most important viral pathogen threat, theapple mosaic virus. Virus-free plant material is essential for the production of certified plants from Sicilian hazelnut cultivars, complying the CE (cat. CAC) quality and the technical standards established in 2017 for vo…
Comparing micro-cutting and mini-cutting technique for the clonal propagation of Metrosideros excelsa
2017
public gardens for its foliage and attractive red flowers. M. excelsa plants are commercially propagated by soft and semi-ripe cuttings. Therefore, new and more reliable propagation techniques derived both from conventional and advanced propagation methods should be considered to support Metrosideros nursery development. The mini-cutting and micro-cutting techniques were compared for the clonal propagation of M. excelsa. Ex vitro rooted micro-cuttings resulted superior to mini-cuttings in terms of rooting percentage, root number per cutting and root length by 23.5%, 42.5% and 2.4%, respectively. However, the mini-cutting technique can be considered an alternative reliable propagation method…
