The thistle-mistle formula in the Viking Age and Nordic Middle Ages – Form, function, and symbolic value

2021

The paper aims to shed new light on the thistle-mistle formula in the famous Bósa saga and in a series of younger runic inscriptions, including some hitherto unpublished runic scribbles on a churchwall in Denmark. The author explores different graphological representations and disgui¬sed variants of this runic formula to get to grips with its positive and/or negative content. Thus, the thistle-mistle formula in the Nordic Viking Age and Middle Ages is identified as a clear-cut case of the written, visual formula which may be deliberately disguised for magical reasons. Based on Harris (1975) and Mitchell (1998), the author argues that this is a prototypical fertility formula which can be cha…

The Harvesting Memories Project: Historical ecology and landscape changes of the Sicani Mountains in Sicily

2022

The Harvesting Memories project aims to investigate the historical landscape dynamics in an inner area of the Sicani Mountains district in Western Sicily (Contrada Castro, Corleone-Palermo). The interdisciplinary approach of the project allowed us to combine and integrate methods from different disciplines such as historical ecology, landscape archaeology, archaeobotany and GIS-based spatial analysis. In this paper some results have been summarized. The comparison between land mosaic change during the last 60 years, the relationship between site catchment area and land suitability and the correlation between archaeobotanical and phytosociological data. This approach underlined the relevance…

Visiting the King of the World

2009

Apsilankymas pas Pasaulio karalių – tai tema, kuri bent paviršutiniškai supažindina su egzistuojančiais daugiau ar mažiau ezoteriniais pasakojimais, kartais net gana fantastiškais, kuriuose kalbama apie viršžmogiškosiomis galiomis apdovanotas būtybes, gyvenančias, atrodo, žemės gelmėse, Azijos žemių platybėse, Himalajų regione, Mongolijoje ar Tibete. „Pasaulio karalius“ – pavadinimas 1927 m. parašyto veikalo, kurio autorius René Guénonas – prancūzų ezoterikas ir mistikas, gimęs 1886 m. Blois, miręs 1951 m. Kaire.

Visualizing linguistic variation in a network of Latin documents and scribes

2018

This article explores whether and how network visualization can benefit philological and historical-linguistic study. This is illustrated with a corpus-based investigation of scribes' language use in a lemmatized and morphologically annotated corpus of documentary Latin (Late Latin Charter Treebank, LLCT2). We extract four continuous linguistic variables from LLCT2 and utilize a gradient colour palette in Gephi to visualize the variable values as node attributes in a trimodal network which consists of the documents, writers, and writing locations underlying the same corpus. We call this network the "LLCT2 network". The geographical coordinates of the location nodes form an approximate map, …

Maisons-en-Champagne (Marne). 6 rue de Flancourt [notice archéologique]

2019

Fleurey-sur-Ouche (Côte-d’Or). Maison de santé [notice archéologique]

2019

Sevrey (Saône-et-Loire). 8 rue Georges Brusson [notice archéologique]

2019

Fleurey-sur-Ouche (Côte-d’Or).
