Determinants of inter-regional migration in the Baltic countries

2003

We show that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania despite small geographical size feature considerable and persistent regional disparities. Registered migration rates have declined dramatically since the last years of Soviet era, yet they are high by international standards. Evidence from regional inflows and outflows in Latvia and from Estonian labour force survey is used to show that regional unemployment and especially wage differentials, as well as demographic factors, have a significant impact both on gross and net migration flows. Age and education effects are consistent with predictions of the human capital model of migration. Unemployed persons, as well as commuters between regions, are si…

Post-Enlargement Return Migrants' Earnings Premium: Evidence from Latvia

2008

The paper exploits a recent survey of over ten thousand economically active residents of Latvia; about 5% of respondents have worked abroad over the last three years, while 12% have family members with such experience. Post-enlargement labor migration from Latvia has been predominantly low-skilled, yet return migrants when compared to stayers are, on average, more educated and less likely to work as unskilled manuals. We combine instrumental variable and propensity score matching methods to study the effect of foreign experience on earnings. Results suggest that return migrants are neither positively nor negatively selected in terms of earnings. However, after controlling for worker demogra…

Regional labor markets in Finland: Adjustment to total versus region-specific shocks

2005

This article analyses regional labor market adjustment in the Finnish provinces during 1976-2000. We investigate the inter-relations of employment, unemployment, labor force participation, and migration to see how a change in region-specific and total labor demand is adjusted. The analysis reveals that region-specific labor demand shocks adjust mainly via participation, whereas total shocks are adjusted by unemployment. The region-specific component of labor demand shock has shorter-lived effects on unemployment and participation, but its effect on employment is permanent. Conversely, total shocks leave no permanent effect. Migration is more important in the region-specific case where, afte…

Posted Migration and Segregation in the European Construction Sector

2015

Worker ‘posting’ or temporary migration of manual workers sent by their employers to work on projects abroad has become increasingly prominent in the European construction industry. It is now normal to find groups of workers from all around Europe on construction sites, living in nearby temporary accommodations, moving on to other projects or back home when the project is complete. This article highlights the interaction between the social and spatial segregation and transnational mobility of these workers in the European Union construction labour market. We argue that the work-focused and employer-dominated nature of the posted workers' social world abroad contributes to their segregation …

CAN RETURN MIGRATION REVITALISE LATVIA’S REGIONS? FACILITATORS AND BARRIERS TO HUMAN CAPITAL GAINS

2021

Migration researchers from East-Central Europe most often focus on the impact of ‘brain drain’ which is characterised by the loss of human capital from emigration. In this paper focus is placed on the assumption that migrants living abroad gain valuable experiences and education opportunities, that lead to personal growth, facilitate entrepreneurship and psychological resilience, amongst other important skills. This experience may be used for the revitalisation of the less-developed regions the migrants return to. To explore what facilitates or inhibits the fulfil potential of ‘brain circulation’ or gain, we use data from two large-scale surveys of return migrants in Latvia, in-depth interv…

Diel Feeding Features of Juveniles of Two Sparids in the Stagnone di Marsala Coastal Sound (Western Sicily, Italy)

2001

Diet composition, feeding rhythms, gastric evacuation rates, daily rations of Diplodus puntazzo (Gmelin 1789) and Sarpa salpa (Linneo 1758) juveniles were studied in order to investigate their trophic ecology, niche breadth and overlap. These Sparids were collected in the Stagnone di Marsala (Western Sicily), in April 1997, in a 24 hour sampling period. Gastric content of 86 specimens of D. puntazzo (standard length = 31.9 ± 6.6 mm; body wet weight = 1.0 Ī 0.5 g) and of 100 specimens of S. salpa (standard length = 32.3 ± 2.9 mm; body wet weight = 0.6 Ī 0.2 g) were examined. Amphipoda and Tanaidacea were the most frequent prey items in stomach content of D. puntozzo, while Hydrozoa, Bryozoa …

Dominance of microstructural processes and their effect on microstructural development: insights from numerical modelling of dynamic recrystallization

2002

The influence of the dominance of different processes on the microstructural development of a quarzite has been numerically modelled using the modelling system Elle. In the model dynamic recrystallization of a polycrystalline aggregate has been simulated by a combination of viscous deformation, lattice rotation, subgrain formation, rotation recrystallization, nucleation of new grains and recovery. Different combinations of the dominance of processes are considered by variations in values of the grain boundary mobility and the energy threshold value for recrystallization by nucleation of new grains. In addition, two different starting microstructures (fine and coarse grained) are used. Resul…

Short-term occupations at high elevation during the Middle Paleolithic at Kalavan 2 (Republic of Armenia).

2021

The Armenian highlands encompasses rugged and environmentally diverse landscapes and is characterized by a mosaic of distinct ecological niches and large temperature gradients. Strong seasonal fluctuations in resource availability along topographic gradients likely prompted Pleistocene hominin groups to adapt by adjusting their mobility strategies. However, the role that elevated landscapes played in hunter-gatherer settlement systems during the Late Pleistocene (Middle Palaeolithic [MP]) remains poorly understood. At 1640 m above sea level, the MP site of Kalavan 2 (Armenia) is ideally positioned for testing hypotheses involving elevation-dependent seasonal mobility and subsistence strateg…

Chapter 24. Lesser kestrel Falco naumanni

2021

The lesser kestrel is a small colonial falcon with a broad breeding distribution range, extending from the Iberian Peninsula to eastern China. Most of the biological and ecological knowledge concerning this species, including migration, has been obtained from European populations. After the end of each breeding season, these populations move preferentially northward, showing pre-migratory movements (of 100–1,000 km) that are necessary to reach rich foraging grounds where they can fuel before commencing the true migration towards Africa. European lesser kestrels migrate on a broad front across the Mediterranean Sea. There is a strong connectivity between European breeding and African non-bre…

Prefazione

2016
