Detection of AA-type amyloid protein in labial salivary glands

2010

Objectives: Among the diverse forms of amyloidosis, secondary type is the most frequent one. Diagnosis of amyloid deposition is based on the identification of the fibrillary protein amyloid by means of Congo Red (CR) or crystal violet (CV) stains, but these techniques do not differentiate between the different types of amyloid fibrils. The aim of this study was to identify by immunofluorescence (IF) AA amyloid a pathological fibrillar low-molecularweight protein formed by cleavage of serum amyloid A (SAA) protein in labial salivary gland (LSG) biopsies from patients with secondary amyloidosis. Study design: 98 LSG were studied, 65 were from patients with secondary amyloidosis and 33 from su…

The "Invisible Children": Uncertain Future of Unaccompanied Minor Migrants in Europe.

2016

Because of their particular helpless condition, the unaccompanied minor migrants are at serious risk to be further deprived of their rights, and to become de facto “invisible” to the authorities, to the public health services, and in general to the public opinion. Furthermore, when they arrive at a destination, or during their journey through Europe, many children often vanish. The full dimension of such phenomenon that further hits the unaccompanied minors along their European migration routes currently is unknown. However, the intense migration that has affected the south Mediterranean borders of the EU over the last 10 years has allowed the collection of sufficient data to raise the high…

LGB´s Arts Affinity: An Empirical Study of Theater Audiences Based on Motivations

2021

The extended belief of gay people being more creative and showing higher interest toward arts lacks robust empirical support. The pioneer study on this issue highlighted that LGB´s arts participation was mostly explained by demographic factors such as level of studies, residence and family situation, which suggests that differences due to sexual orientation tend to fade. In this paper, we put forward the hypothesis that sexual orientation influences motivations to participate, which emphasizes their role and heterogeneity. To do so, we conducted a survey on participants at an alternative performing arts festival collecting information on socio-demographics, including sexual orientation, mot…

Minor physical anomalies in children with autism spectrum disorder.

2007

Abstract Aim To investigate the rate and topological profile of minor physical anomalies (MPAs) (prenatal errors of morphogenesis) in a group of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), in order to better set a temporal framing of embryological factors involved in the neurodevelopmental etiology. Method A new modified Waldrop scale and a mixed approach of computerized photogrammetry and classic anthroposcopy was used to detect the presence or absence of 41 MPAs in 24 children (mean age: 7 years; sex ratio: 22M:2F) with ASD and 24 healthy comparison subjects (mean age: 7 years; sex ratio: 19M:5F) selected with DSM IV and CARS. Results We found that children with ASD presenting MPAs (n =…

Trocar-related abdominal wall bleeding in 200 patients after laparoscopic cholecistectomy: Personal experience

2006

AIM: To determine the complications and incidence of the first and second access-related vascular injuries induced by videolaparoscopic cholecistectomy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed vascular injuries in 200 consecutive patients who underwent videolaparoscopic cholecistectomy from 2003 to 2005. One hundred and one patients with placement of radial expanding trocars were assigned into group A and 99 patients with placement of pyramidal tipped trocars into group B. All the patients were submitted to open access according to Hasson for the first trocar. RESULTS: Bleeding did not occur at the intraoperative cannula-site in group A. However, it occurred at the intraoperative cannula-site …

The Boundless World of Cranioplasty: A Multicenter Retrospective Study and Therapeutic Flow-Chart Patient-Specific Based.

2021

Background Cranioplasty is both a functional and aesthetical therapeutic option. In the clinical scenario every cranioplasty's material is potentially qualified to achieve the goal of calvarian reconstruction but there is a lack of agreement about the optimum choice, especially between the heterologous ones. The choice of cranioplasty widely depends on surgeon's personal preferences. In this retrospective multicentric study a comparative analysis of hydroxyapatite or titanium cranioplasties was carried on analyzing the main factors considered by the surgeon to choose a material rather than another one. Our results and data were compared with those reported in the scientific literature and a…

Continuità fra tessuti urbani e spazi agricoli in contrada Raccuglia

2014

Optical and photovoltaic properties of indium selenide thin films prepared by van der Waals epitaxy

2001

Indium selenide thin films have been grown on p-type gallium selenide single crystal substrates by van der Waals epitaxy. The use of two crucibles in the growth process has resulted in indium selenide films with physical properties closer to these of bulk indium selenide than those prepared by other techniques. The optical properties of the films have been studied by electroabsorption measurements. The band gap and its temperature dependence are very close to those of indium selenide single crystals. The width of the fundamental transition, even if larger than that of the pure single crystal material, decreases monotonously with temperature. Exciton peaks are not observed even at low temper…
