Agreement between different versions of MNA.
2013
Malnutrition occurs frequently in the elderly with important clinical and functional consequences. Moreover, the treatment of malnutrition in the elderly may be effective if clinical and nutritional interventions are performed in the early stages. Therefore the early identification of the risk of malnutrition using validated and handy tools plays a pivotal role in terms of clinical outcome. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was validated for this purpose since many years but it is still ongoing the debate over whether the use of different items in certain clinical conditions can be effective without affecting the validity of the nutritional status evaluation. The aim of this study was to as…
Experimental and DFT Studies on Competitive Heterocyclic Rearrangements. A Cascade Isoxazole-1,2,4-Oxadiazole-Oxazole Rearrangement
2009
The thermal rearrangements of 3-acylamino-5-methylisoxazoles 1 have been investigated under basic and neutral conditions and interpreted with the support of computational data. The density functional theory (DFT) study on the competitive routes available for the base-catalyzed thermal rearrangement of isoxazoles 1 showed that the Boulton-Katritzky (BK) rearrangement, producing the less stable 3-acetonyl- 1,2,4-oxadiazoles 5, is a much more favored process than either the migration-nucleophilic attack-cyclization (MNAC) or the ring contraction-ring expansion (RCRE). In turn, an increase in reaction temperature will promote the MNAC of oxadiazoles 5, producing the more stable 2-acylaminooxazo…

Manganese overload affects p38 MAPK phosphorylation and metalloproteinase activity during sea urchin embryonic development.
2014
Abstract In the marine environment, manganese represents a potential emerging contaminant, resulting from an increased production of manganese-containing compounds. In earlier reports we found that the exposure of Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin embryos to manganese produced phenotypes with no skeleton. In addition, manganese interfered with calcium uptake, perturbed extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling, affected the expression of skeletogenic genes, and caused an increase of the hsc70 and hsc60 protein levels. Here, we extended our studies focusing on the temporal activation of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) and the proteolytic activity of metalloprot…
Using optical satellite and aerial imagery for automatic coastline mapping
2020
The continuous availability and rapid accessibility to multispectral data from satellite platforms within the Copernicus Programme represents a great opportunity for users in different fields of applications as: Agriculture, observation of coastal zones, monitoring land cover change. The aim of this paper is to identify a suitable method to map coastline using Sentinel-2 optical satellite image. The method provides the use of two indexes developed in remote sensing field for water environment: NDWI (Normalized difference water index) and MNDWI (Modified Normalized difference water index). Starting from the construction of maps of these indexes and, identifying appropriate threshold values, …
Magneto-optical Investigations of Nanostructured Materials Based on Single Molecule Magnets Monitor Strong Environmental Effects
2007
The determination of the magnetic properties of molecular magnets in environments similar to those used in spintronic devices is fundamental for the development of applications. Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecular cluster systems that display magnetic hysteresis of dynamical origin at low temperature. As they behave like perfectly monodisperse nanomagnets and show clear macroscopic quantum effects in their magnetic properties, they are extremely appealing candidates for the forthcoming generation of molecular devices: they have been proposed as efficient systems for quantum computation, ultra-high-density magnetic recording media, and molecular spintronic systems. These attractive …

Age-dependent regulation of antioxidant genes by p38α MAPK in the liver
2018
p38α is a redox sensitive MAPK activated by pro-inflammatory cytokines and environmental, genotoxic and endoplasmic reticulum stresses. The aim of this work was to assess whether p38α controls the antioxidant defense in the liver, and if so, to elucidate the mechanism(s) involved and the age-related changes. For this purpose, we used liver-specific p38α-deficient mice at two different ages: young-mice (4 months-old) and old-mice (24 months-old). The liver of young p38α knock-out mice exhibited a decrease in GSH levels and an increase in GSSG/GSH ratio and malondialdehyde levels. However, old mice deficient in p38α had higher hepatic GSH levels and lower GSSG/GSH ratio than young p38α knock-…
Benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde oxidation on MnOx clusters: Unraveling atomistic features
2021
Abstract The catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol with O 2 is a promising option for the production of benzaldehyde, from both environmental and economical viewpoints. In particular, highly dispersed MnO x systems feature good activity and selectivity in a wide range of temperatures, although deactivation phenomena by over-oxidation and/or poisoning of active sites are generally recorded. On this account, a density functional theory study was performed on cluster-sized catalyst models, namely Mn 4 O 8 and over-oxygenated Mn 4 O 9 fragments, to predict the reactivity pattern of MnO x catalysts in the selective aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Several pathways concur to determine the who…
A New Procedure for the Lightning Experiment: Mn2O7 and Ethanol
2010
Formation of Mn2O7 and its reaction with ethanol is commonly referred to as “underwater lightnings”. Classic procedures are reviewed, along with their weak points, and physical and chemical properties of dimanganese heptaoxide are shown. A new improved approach is finally presented, safer and easier, and suited for lecturehall activities.
