Transition to formal schooling: Do transition practices matter for academic performance?

2011

Abstract This study examined whether the transition practices implemented in preschool–elementary school pairs contribute to children's academic development during the first year of elementary school. Participants were 398 children who moved from 36 preschools to 22 elementary schools in two Finnish towns. Children were tested in respect to their reading, writing, and math skills in the preschool spring and in the grade 1 spring. The most common practices reported by preschool teachers were discussions about the school entrants and familiarizing preschool children with the school environment and the new teacher. Multilevel latent growth modeling showed that the more the preschool teachers a…

Latent force models for earth observation time series prediction

2016

We introduce latent force models for Earth observation time series analysis. The model uses Gaussian processes and differential equations to combine data driven modelling with a physical model of the system. The LFM presented here performs multi-output structured regression, adapts to the signal characteristics, it can cope with missing data in the time series, and provides explicit latent functions that allow system analysis and evaluation. We successfully illustrate the performance in challenging scenarios of crop monitoring from space, providing time-resolved time series predictions.

Testing Multi-Sensors Time Series of Lai Estimates to Monitor Rice Phenology: Preliminary Results

2018

Timely and accurate information on crop growth and seasonal dynamics are increasingly needed to develop monitoring systems aimed to detect seasonal anomalies, support site specific management and estimate crop yield at the end of the season. In particular, frequent decametric information nowadays being provided exploiting the new generation of Earth Observation (EO) platforms are fundamental for farm level monitoring. This study presents an analysis aimed at fully exploiting dense time series of EO data derived from the combined use of ESA Sentinel-2A and NASA Landsat-7/8 imageries for crop phenological monitoring. Decametric Leaf Area Index (LAI) maps were generated for the year 2016 by in…

Use of retail market data to assess prices and flows of non-wood forest products in Latvia

2020

In northern Europe, largest part of non-wood forest products (NWFPs) are gathered for recreational purposes and household consumption, but considerable amount of forest berries and mushrooms are sold as well. Retail market, largely invisible for the official statistics, reveals the lifestyle-related aspects of NWFP trade and may help to understand the flows of this ecosystem service when information on wholesale trade is inaccessible. The prices and flows of most common NWFPs – edible berries, mushrooms and tree sap – in the retail market in Latvia in 2017 and 2018 were analysed based on direct interviews with the sellers in marketplaces and telephone interviews with online retailers. Predicting future thermal habitat suitability of competing native and invasive fish species: From metabolic scope to oceanographic modelling

2015

Global increase in sea temperatures has been suggested to facilitate the incoming and spread of tropical invaders. Here, we determined the effect of temperature on the aerobic metabolic scope of two competing fish species, one native and one invasive, and we predicted their future thermal habitat suitability.

Multi-Locus Phylogenetic Analyses of the Almadablennius Clade Reveals Inconsistencies with the Present Taxonomy of Blenniid Fishes

2022

We used a multi-locus phylogenetic approach (i.e., combining both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA fragments) to address some long-standing taxonomic inconsistencies within the diverse fish clade of Combtooth Blennies (Blenniidae—unranked clade Almadablennius). The obtained phylogenetic trees revealed some major inconsistencies in the current taxonomy of Parablennini, such as the paraphyletic status of the Salaria and Parablennius genera, casting some doubt regarding their actual phylogenetic relationship. Furthermore, a scarce-to-absent genetic differentiation was observed among the three species belonging to the genus Chasmodes. This study provides an updated taxonomy and phylogeny of the fo…

Forest Naturalness in Northern Europe: Perspectives on Processes, Structures and Species Diversity

2011

Saving the remaining natural forests in northern Europe has been one of the main goals to halt the ongoing decline of forest biodiversity. To facilitate the recognition, mapping and efficient conservation of natural forests, there is an urgent need for a general formulation, based on ecological patterns and processes, of the concept of “forest naturalness”. However, complexity, structural idiosyncracy and dynamical features of unmanaged forest ecosystems at various spatio-temporal scales pose major challenges for such a formulation. The definitions hitherto used for the concept of forest naturalness can be fruitfully grouped into three dimensions: 1) structure-based concepts of natural …
