Factors that affect the permeability of commercial hollow-fibre membranes in a submerged anaerobic MBR (HF-SAnMBR) system
2013
A demonstration plant with two commercial HF ultrafiltration membrane modules (PURON (R), Koch Membrane Systems, PUR-PSH31) was operated with urban wastewater. The effect of the main operating variables on membrane performance at sub-critical and supracritical filtration conditions was tested. The physical operating variables that affected membrane performance most were gas sparging intensity and back-flush (BF) frequency. Indeed, low gas sparging intensities (around 0.23 Nm(3) h(-1) m(-2)) and low BF frequencies (30s back-flush for every 10 basic filtration relaxation cycles) were enough to enable membranes to be operated sub-critically even when levels of mixed liquor total solids were hi…
Nitrite inhibition of microalgae induced by the competition between microalgae and nitrifying bacteria
2020
[EN] Outdoor microalgae cultivation systems treating anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) effluents usually present ammonium oxidising bacteria (AOB) competition with microalgae for ammonium uptake, which can cause nitrite accumulation. In literature, nitrite effects over microalgae have shown controversial results. The present study evaluates the nitrite inhibition role in a microalgae-nitrifying bacteria culture. For this purpose, pilot- and lab-scale assays were carried out. During the continuous outdoor operation of the membrane photobioreactor (MPBR) plant, biomass retention time (BRT) of 2 d favoured AOB activity, which caused nitrite accumulation. This nitrite was confirmed to inhib…
Associations between parental rules, style of communication and children's screen time
2015
Background Research suggests an inverse association between parental rules and screen time in pre-adolescents, and that parents’ style of communication with their children is related to the children’s time spent watching TV. The aims of this study were to examine associations of parental rules and parental style of communication with children’s screen time and perceived excessive screen time in five European countries. Methods UP4FUN was a multi-centre, cluster randomised controlled trial with pre- and post-test measurements in each of five countries; Belgium, Germany, Greece, Hungary and Norway. Questionnaires were completed by the children at school and the parent questionnaire was brough…
An Iconic Framework for Learning the Art of Programming
2016
The integration of programming teachings, in all levels of education, highlights the need to acquire the art of programming for each individual student through versatile tools based on specific cognitive methods. Diversified linguistic metaphors have to be adopted by the developing frame, in order to highlight the qualities of each student. Therefore, a framework, oriented to learning the art of programming, must foster polychrome constructs representations, a number of data structures and an intuitive interfaces in order to make easier to understand the evolution of the algorithm that have to be developed. The following contribution will present a theoretical formalization of a framework f…
Urban Landscape in the Graphic Representations of the Cathedral of Palermo
2017
The present study offers some reflections on the relationship between the cathedral of Palermo and the urban area in which it insists, regarding the indissoluble link with the landscape aspect that through the history offered a variety of perceptive suggestions, marked by the passage and presence of different dominations. The cognitive storytelling of the cathedral of Palermo is obtained through a graphic study on routes which provided of multiple images keeping the scar of time in the elaboration of orographic sections and perspective views and highlighting the role of perception in this changing combination of architecture and landscape.
Assessment of the integrated urban water quality model complexity through identifiability analysis
2010
Urban sources of water pollution have often been cited as the primary cause of poor water quality in receiving water bodies (RWB), and recently many studies have been conducted to investigate both continuous sources, such as wastewater-treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, and intermittent sources, such as combined sewer overflows (CSOs). An urban drainage system must be considered jointly, i.e., by means of an integrated approach. However, although the benefits of an integrated approach have been widely demonstrated, several aspects have prevented its wide application, such as the scarcity of field data for not only the input and output variables but also parameters that govern intermediate st…

THE DIAGNOSIS OF ROAD SURFACE DISTRESSES THROUGH IMAGE-BASED MODELING TECHNIQUES. EXPERIMENTAL SURVEY ON LABORATORY-RUTTED SAMPLES
2015
In the past few years, there has been a drastic increase in the use of image-based modeling (IBM) techniques to create high quality, reality-based 3D models. The low costs of these techniques, as well as their attractive visual quality, have led many researchers and professionals to invest their energy and resources in several tests. IBM is rarely used in the field of road surface distresses as diagnosis is usually performed using other techniques and devices. Road safety statistics reveal that about a half of the total number of accidents occur mainly due to the deterioration of the pavement. The goal of effective road network management is often incompatible with economic resources design…
Integrated prototyping and rendering system for the display of ceramic finds
2017
The project, carried out in collaboration between the Department of Architecture of Palermo and the Archaeological Museum Antonino Salinas of Palermo, proposes a system of integration and reconstruction of ceramic artefacts, using modeling, 3D printing and rendering processes for an integrated museum exhibition system, which the viewers can observe the fragment nearing the re-reconstructed fragment that reconstructs the original morphology and an interactive digital model in which the viewers can also observe the metric aspect and, where present, the decorative apparatus.
Reconstructing urban scene 3D using VisualSfM
2013
New computer vision techniques use photo dataset to rapidly build detailed 3D models. Computer- vision researchers have explored many approaches to city-scale 3D reconstruc on. Among these systems stands out VisualSfM developed by the University of Washington & Google Inc. It is a open source GUI applica on of a Structure from Mo on (SfM) so! ware that uses a feature extractor called Si! GPU and the Mul core Bundle Adjustment. In addi on it embeds the CMVS/ PMVS2 able to reconstruct dense 3D point cloud. Our goal is to demonstrate the metric accuracy of VisualSfM+CMVS/PMVS2 and that to get run it, you can use an unstructured photo dataset but the result improves if you use a structured phot…
