Assessment of data availability influence on integrated urban drainage modelling uncertainty
2009
In urban water quality management, several models are connected and integrated for analysing the fate of pollutants from the sources in the urban catchment to the final recipient; classical problems connected with the selection and calibration of parameters are amplified by the complexity of the modelling approach increasing their uncertainty. The present paper aims at studying the influence of reductions in available data on the modelling response uncertainty with respect to the different integrated modelling outputs (both considering quantity and quality variables). At this scope, a parsimonious integrated home-made model has been used allowing for analysing the combinative effect of data…
Control points deployment in an Intelligent Transportation System for monitoring inter-urban network roadway
2022
Abstract The constant evolution of transportation systems and traffic in developing countries is nowadays confronted with a problem of road safety and therefore of a high accident rate, especially in the context of inter-urban road transport. In this work, we propose a communication architecture for an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to provide surveillance in an inter-urban transport network in the context of developing countries. We introduce two types of control points: Relay Control Points (RCP) and Treatment Control Points (TrCP). We also designed two multi-objective models for the deployment of these points. In order to ensure good coverage, to minimize the cost of installation and…
Predicting Social Distancing Intention and Behavior During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Integrated Social Cognition Model.
2020
Abstract Background Social distancing is a key behavior to minimize COVID-19 infections. Identification of potentially modifiable determinants of social distancing behavior may provide essential evidence to inform social distancing behavioral interventions. Purpose The current study applied an integrated social cognition model to identify the determinants of social distancing behavior, and the processes involved, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods In a prospective correlational survey study, samples of Australian (N = 365) and U.S. (N = 440) residents completed online self-report measures of social cognition constructs (attitude, subjective norm, moral norm, anticipated regret…
Acoustic rendering of particle-based simulation of liquids in motion
2009
In interaction and interface design, the representation of continuous processes often uses liquid metaphors, such as dripping or streaming. When an auditory display of such processes is required, an approach to sound-synthesis based on the physics of liquids in motion would be the most convincing, especially when real-time interaction is into play. In order to bridge the complexity of fluid-dynamic simulations with the needs of interactive sonification, we propose a multi-rate sound synthesis of liquid phenomena. Low-rate smoothed-particle hydrodynamics is used to model liquids in motion and to trigger sound-emitting events. Such events, such as solid-liquid collision, or bubble formation, …
Interactions of pharmaceutical companies with world countries, cancers and rare diseases from Wikipedia network analysis
2019
AbstractUsing the English Wikipedia network of more than 5 million articles we analyze interactions and interlinks between the 34 largest pharmaceutical companies, 195 world countries, 47 rare renal diseases and 37 types of cancer. The recently developed algorithm using a reduced Google matrix (REGOMAX) allows us to take account both of direct Markov transitions between these articles and also of indirect transitions generated by the pathways between them via the global Wikipedia network. This approach therefore provides a compact description of interactions between these articles that allows us to determine the friendship networks between them, as well as the PageRank sensitivity of countr…
AI for Resource Allocation and Resource Allocation for AI: a two-fold paradigm at the network edge
2022
5G-and-beyond and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are pushing a shift from the classic cloud-centric view of the network to a new edge-centric vision. In such a perspective, the computation, communication and storage resources are moved closer to the user, to the benefit of network responsiveness/latency, and of an improved context-awareness, that is, the ability to tailor the network services to the live user's experience. However, these improvements do not come for free: edge networks are highly constrained, and do not match the resource abundance of their cloud counterparts. In such a perspective, the proper management of the few available resources is of crucial importance to impr…
Online Sport Event Consumers: Attitude, E-Quality and E-Satisfaction
2017
Sporting events attract millions of dollars in sponsorship and tourism, so a strong event brand is required. The event website quality is responsible for maintaining and attracting consumers and creating a positive attitude towards the brand. The purpose of this study was to examine key variables that affect the behavior of online sport event consumers. Specifically, it explores e-quality and e-satisfaction and how they influence the attitude towards the website and the brand. Structural equation model tests revealed that a positive quality can determine a positive attitude to the web site, even the consumer is not satisfied with it. On the other hand, the stakeholder needs to pay attention…
Multi-data models translations in interoperable information systems
1996
Interoperation of heterogeneous and autonomous information systems has traditionally been hampered by semantic differences in their data models. In this paper, we address the problem by defining a methodology called TIME, which is based on an extensible meta model. Its key features are: a set of meta-types which can be used to represent the syntax and the semantics of data modeling concepts, a knowledge base of transformation rules that map a meta-type into other meta-types, and an inference engine which uses the transformation rules to translate schema from source to target models. The extensibility of the meta-model is achieved by organizing the meta-types into a generalization hierarchy …
The Relationship Between Generalized Resistance Resources, Sense of Coherence, and Health Among Finnish People Aged 65-69
2005
Abstract. The present study investigated the appropriateness of Antonovsky's model, in which generalized resistance resources (GRRs) facilitate an individual's sense of coherence (SOC); which in turn is assumed to sustain health. The proposed model was tested using a sample of 320 Finnish persons (132 of them were men and 188 women) aged 65-69 years. The GRRs investigated were family income, cognitive functioning, years of formal education, marital status, and physical exercise. Health was measured by means of a multidimensional indicator composed of physical, social and mental health. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) within the framework of LISREL models were used to test the hypothesi…
Using Hydrus 2-D Simulation model to evaluate wetted soil volume in subsurface drip irrigation systems.
2007
Drip irrigation is considered one of the most efficient irrigation systems. Alternatively to the traditional drip irrigation systems, laterals can be installed below the soil surface. Realizing the subsurface drip irrigation (SDI), which recently has been increasing in use as a consequence of advances in plastics technology, making SDI equipment more affordable and long lasting. Due to its potential high efficiency SDI may produce benefits, especially in places where water is a limited source. As the use of SDI is relatively new, a better understanding of the infiltration process around a buried point source can contribute to increased water use efficiency and consequently the success of dr…
