Thymosin α1 and α-Inteferon with Cisplatin and Etoposide in Advanced Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: A Phase II Study
1993
In recent years, biological response modifiers (BRMs) have emerged as an important new class of agents for treating cancer. Agents such as interferon (IFN) and interleukin 2 (IL-2) have been reported to induce significant tumor regression in various types of cancer usually resistant to chemotherapy (1,12), but their use in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has received little attention.
Effect of kind and content of organo-modified clay on properties of PET nanocomposites
2011
In this work we report the properties of nanocomposite based on PET with two different samples of organically modified montmorillonites. In particular, we studied the effect of the filler concentration on morphology, rheology, and mechanical performance, focusing our attention on the effect of the degradation phenomena of the clay modifiers. The results indicate that at low clay level the morphology achieved is mainly intercalated. On increasing the filler level, coalescence and/or bad defragmentation phenomena induce a coarser morphology, as confirmed by XRD, SEM, and TEM observations. When a more polar organic modifier is used to modify the clay, the particle adhesion and distribution is …
THORACIC SYRINGOMYELIA IN A PATIENT WITH AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS
2015
We report a patient with bulba r - onset, clinically defined, sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis bearing an isolated syringomyelia of the lower thoracic portion of the spinal cord. This is a very unusual association between two rare and progressive disorders, both affecting the spinal motoneurons. Syringomyelia might have acted as a phenotypic modifier in this ALS patient.
P228 Cytomegalovirus Infection: is it a cause of flare-up in inflammatory bowel diseases?
2020
Abstract Background The presence of CMV in blood is quite common in patients with severe flares of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) and seems to predict an adverse outcome. The impact of antiviral treatment on CMV in this setting (indications and drug options) is an unresolved issue. Our aim was to reassess the CMV role in patients with IBD hospitalised for severe exacerbations, analysing the relationship between CMV positivity, clinical characteristics, antiviral therapy and disease outcomes. Methods We evaluated a homogeneous cohort of 97 consecutive patients with IBD hospitalised from 2012 to 2018. Data regarding age, gender, smoke, familial predisposition, type of IBD, e…
Sumoylation of the transcription factor NFATc1 leads to its subnuclear relocalization and interleukin-2 repression by histone deacetylase.
2009
The family of NFAT (nuclear factor of activated T-cells) transcription factors plays an important role in cytokine gene regulation. In peripheral T-cells NFATc1 and -c2 are predominantly expressed. Because of different promoter and poly(A) site usage as well as alternative splicing events, NFATc1 is synthesized in multiple isoforms. The highly inducible NFATc1/A contains a relatively short C terminus, whereas the longer, constitutively expressed isoform NFATc1/C spans an extra C-terminal peptide of 246 amino acids. Interestingly, this NFATc1/C-specific terminus can be highly sumoylated. Upon sumoylation, NFATc1/C, but not the unsumoylated NFATc1/A, translocates to promyelocytic leukemia nuc…
Cytokines with Possible Clinical Utility
1987
Biological response modifiers (BRM) are agents aimed at reducing tumor growth, not primarily by exerting direct cytotoxic effects but by modulation of tumor gene expression (e.g., induction of differentiation) or by enhancing host defense mechanisms directed against cancer cells. BRM as primary therapy or as adjuncts to cytotoxic agents in the treatment of cancers have attracted increasing interest in view of stagnating clinical results in many areas [1], and there is increasing evidence of in vitro and in vivo efficacy of these agents. Furthermore, advances in molecular biology suggesting that oncogenes and their products play a crucial role in oncogenesis support approaches to modulation …
Preclinical Effect of Absorption Modifying Excipients on Rat Intestinal Transport of Model Compounds and the Mucosal Barrier Marker 51Cr-EDTA
2017
There is a renewed interest from the pharmaceutical field to develop oral formulations of compounds, such as peptides, oligonucleotides, and polar drugs. However, these often suffer from insufficient absorption across the intestinal mucosal barrier. One approach to circumvent this problem is the use of absorption modifying excipient(s) (AME). This study determined the absorption enhancing effect of four AMEs (sodium dodecyl sulfate, caprate, chitosan, N-acetylcysteine) on five model compounds in a rat jejunal perfusion model. The aim was to correlate the model compound absorption to the blood-to-lumen clearance of the mucosal marker for barrier integrity, 51Cr-EDTA. Sodium dodecyl sulfate a…
Oppimiskontekstin vaikutus oppijanpragmatiikkaan : astemääritteet leksikaalisina nallekarhuina
2015
Spinopelvic changes based on the simplified SRS-Schwab adult spinal deformity classification: relationships with disability and health-related qualit…
2018
Study design Cross-sectional, observational study. Objective To study the occurrence of sagittal malalignment, the adaptability of a simplified sagittal modifiers grading of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-Schwab adult spinal deformity (ASD) classification, and the deformity-specific SRS questionnaire version 30 (SRS-30) in an unselected adult cohort with symptomatic degenerative spinal disorders. Summary of background data The sagittal modifiers of the SRS-Schwab ASD classification correlate with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measures in patients with ASD. The deformities and disabilities caused by sagittal malalignment in patients with common degenerative spinal disorders of…
Interrogator intonation and memory encoding performance.
2019
Based on recent findings that interrogator intonation can enhance interrogative suggestibility during recall phases, the present study tested influences of interrogator intonation on memory performance even as early as at the encoding stage. We experimentally manipulated interrogator intonation during encoding of a story to be recalled in immediate and delayed subsequent memory tests (Experiment 1, N = 50). As expected, a symmetrically structuring vs. an isolating-emphasizing speaking style generally increased the amount of freely recalled details. In a more fine-grained experiment (N = 50), we additionally manipulated emphasized story details and tested recall rates for peripheral, neutral…
