La cantata a Palermo fra Sei e Settecento: il caso dei Gesuiti

Il contributo esamina la diffusione a Palermo tra Sei e Settecento del genere della cantata, nelle molteplici accezioni che tale termine racchiude: cantata celebrativa, cantata spirituale, cantata da camera. In particolare si dà rilievo all’attività di committenza dei gesuiti e al repertorio delle cantate in latino (solo di rado in italiano) che tra XVII e XVIII secolo venivano eseguite in occasione delle cerimonie per laurea che avevano luogo nel collegio della compagnia.

Yvette Guilbert was a great singer and diseuse whose career spanned over almost 70 years. The article presents her artistic achievements, closely scrutinizes two of her famous songs and finally concentrates on her close relationship and correspondence with Sigmund Freud. Their correspondence from the early 1930s surprisingly focuses on the very nature of art, where the views of the two correspondents significantly differ. Yvette Guilbert's views, naive as they may seem, actually present a strong counterpoint to Freud's theoretical take on art. The paper presents the starting point of a more extensive book-length research into this unlikely and instructive exchange.

The essay aims to shed light on the relationship between opera and play, focusing on the card scenes in four operatic masterpieces of the 19th and 20th centuries: "Carmen" (1875), "The Queen of Spades" (1890), "The Girl of the Golden West" (1910) and "The Rake’s Progress" (1951). Alberto Fortis’ “Viaggio in Dalmazia” (Padua, 1774) described for the first time the Morlacks (Cr. “Vlasi”) of the inner Dalmatia as the true model of a primitive group, whose characteristics became a source of inspiration until 1830s for some Italian writers and ballet composers devoted to exoticism. Contemporaneously, Homer’s paradigm, introduced by Melchiorre Cesarotti in the foreword to the Italian version of the poems of Ossian (1763), as quoted by Fortis, was in turn transformed by the composer and doctor of Split Giulio Bajamonti.
