Trial for the long neutron counter TETRA using $^{96,97}$Rb radioactive sources

International audience; The TETRA long neutron counter is operated at ALTO ISOL facility behind the PARRNe mass separator. TETRA has been proven to be a unique instrument for measurements of β-decay properties of short-lived neutron-rich nuclei having applications for the nuclear structure and/or astrophysical r-process calculations. A proper calibration of TETRA can allow validation of the experimental procedure used for determination of β-delayed one-neutron emission probabilities (P1n). It requires the use of a well-known β-neutron decaying radioactive source which can be only produced and measured on-line due to its short half-life. X-Ray Eclipse Time Delays in 4U2129+47

2007

4U 2129+47 was discovered in the early 80's and classified as an accretion disk corona source due to its broad and partial X-ray eclipses. The 5.24 hr binary orbital period was inferred from the X-ray and optical light curve modulation, implying a late K or M spectral type companion star. The source entered a low state in 1983, during which the optical modulation disappeared and an F8 IV star was revealed, suggesting that 4U 2129+47 might be part of a triple system. The nature of 4U 2129+47 has since been investigated, but no definitive conclusion has been reached. Measurement of the Coherent Neutron Scattering Length of (3) He.

By means of neutron interferometry the s-wave neutron scattering length of the (3)He nucleus was re-measured at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). Using a skew symmetrical perfect crystal Si-interferometer and a linear twin chamber cell, false phase shifts due to sample misalignment were reduced to a negligible level. Simulation calculations suggest an asymmetrically alternating measuring sequence in order to compensate for systematic errors caused by thermal phase drifts. IMAGINE: A Cold Neutron Imaging Station at the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin

International audience; A second cold neutron imaging station has been open to users at the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin. The station is designed for high resolution neutron imaging and tomography. The typical field of view is 100x100 mm2 with a spatial resolution of 100 μm. Betterspatial resolutions (∼50 μm) can be achieved when reducing the field of view down to 30x30mm2. The L/D ratio can be varied from 200 to1000with pinhole sizes ranging from 20 to7 mm. Future upgrades will provide capabilities for energy resolved measurements using either a velocity selector or a double crystal monochromator. The possibility to perform polarized neutron experiments will also be provided next year.

Elastic constants in RbI, determined by inelastic neutron scattering

Long-wavelength acoustic phonons have been studied in the whole (100)-plane of RbI at 295 K by means of inelastic neutron scattering. The raw data have been corrected for resolution effects taking into account the curvature of the dispersion surface and variations of the mode eigenvectors. The shifts of the neutron groups due to these resolution effects are discussed in detail. The analysis of the experimental results gives for the zero sound elastic constantsc11=28.15±0.5,c12=3.7±0.5 andc44=2.85±0.1 1010 dyn/cm2. Mode-coupling crossover in viscous toluene revealed by neutron and light scattering

The dynamics of supercooled toluene, studied in a GHz-THz range by incoherent neutron and depolarized light scattering, is found to be in full accord with mode coupling predictions. Around the susceptibility minimum, neutron spectra are wavenumber independent and proportional to light scattering data; the fast β-relaxation scaling law applies; amplitude and frequency diverge with power laws that extrapolate towards a crossover temperature Tc K.

A self-consistent approach to the reflection component in 4U 1705-44

High-resolution spectroscopy has recently revealed in many neutron-star Low-Mass X-ray binaries that the shape of the broad iron line observed in the 6.4-6.97 keV range is consistently well fitted by a relativistically smeared line profile. We show here spectral fitting results using a newly developed self-consistent reflection model on XMM-Newton data of the LMXB 4U 1705-44 during a period when the source was in a bright soft state. This reflection model adopts a blackbody prescription for the shape of the impinging radiation field, that we physically associate with the boundary layer emission. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Chandra Observation of the Persistent Emission from the Dipping Source XB 1916-053

We present the results of a 50 ks long Chandra observation of the dipping source XB 1916-053. During the observation two X-ray bursts occurred and the dips were not present at each orbital period. From the zero-order image we estimate the precise X-ray coordinates of the source with a 90% uncertainty of 0.6''. In this work we focus on the spectral study of discrete absorption features, during the persistent emission, using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on board the Chandra satellite. We reply to the comment [Front. Phys. 14(5), 53605 (2019)] by Y. Finkelstein and R. Moreh on our article Front. Phys. 13(1), 138205 (2018). We agree with some of their criticisms about our calculation of the temperature effect on the kinetic energy of hydrogen atoms of supercooled confined water; we also agree with their statement that, in view of the current sensitivity of the technique, possible effects of the liquid-liquid water transition are hardly detected with deep inelastic neutron scattering (DINS). However, we disagree with their use of the translational mass ratio of a single water molecule and, in general, with their underestimation of collective effects.

High performance 3D CZT spectro-imager for BNCT-SPECT: preliminary characterization

The National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) is supporting the 3CaTS project with the aim of developing a new Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) system for real time 10 B therapeutic dose monitoring in the binary experimental hadron therapy called Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). BNCT is a highly selective tumour treatment based on the neutron capture reaction 10 B(n,α) 7 Li. The secondary particles have a high LET with ranges in tissues of the order of 10 μm (thus less than the mean cell diameter of few tens μm).
