Les recherches presentees mettent en evidence des relations entre anomalies comportementales et cognitives et dysfonctionnements cerebraux sous-jacents a partir de methodes d'exploration electrophysiologique non invasives (electroencephalogramme, potentiels evoques auditifs). Trois types de troubles sont etudies : les troubles du sommeil, l'intolerance au changement et l'exploration visuelle atypique des visages humains. La complementarite des approches cliniques et neurophysiologiques est cruciale aux etapes du diagnostic fonctionnel, de l'intervention therapeutique et educative.

Background. Physical activity (PA) and sleep are related to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and their risk factors. Clinical practices to promote sleep in the ICU: A multinational survey

PURPOSE: To describe sleep assessment and strategies to promote sleep in adult ICUs in ten countries.METHODS: Multicenter, self-administered survey sent to nurse managers.RESULTS: Response rate was 66% with 522 ICUs providing data. 'Lying quietly with closed eyes' was the characteristic most frequently perceived as indicative of sleep by >60% of responding ICUs in all countries except Italy. Few ICUs (9%) had a protocol for sleep management or used sleep questionnaires (1%). Compared to ICUs in Northern Europe, those in central Europe were more likely to have a sleep promoting protocol (p < 0.001), and to want to implement a protocol (p < 0.001). A Nonlinear Approach to Brain Function: Deterministic Chaos and Sleep EEG

In order to perform a nonlinear dimensional analysis of the sleep electroencephalogram (EEG), we applied an algorithm proposed by Grassberger and Procaccia to calculate the correlation dimension D2 of different sleep stages under Lorazepam medication versus placebo. This correlation dimension characterizes the dynamics of the sleep EEG and it estimates the degrees of freedom of the signal under study. We demonstrate that slow-wave sleep depicts a much smaller dimensionality than light or rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and that Lorazepam does not alter the EEG's dimensionality except in stage II and REM.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) plays a key role in coordinating neuroendocrine, metabolic and behavioral responses in stress and affective disorders. To further investigate the effects of enhanced pituitary-adrenocortical activity upon sleep-related phenomena we administered four intravenous injections of 50 micrograms human (h)-CRH or saline to 11 normal males at 10 p.m., 11 p.m., 12 p.m. and 1 a.m. and measured plasma levels of cortisol and growth hormone (GH) as well as sleep EEG recordings throughout the night. We hypothesized that a modest oxygen enrichment, rather than 100% oxygen supplementation as used in previous trials, could result in improvement in ventilatory and cardiac symptoms, in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), without jeopardizing the chemostimulant ventilatory drive. This hypothesis was tested in five male patients with OSA in a single-blinded trial consisting of one night spent sleeping in control room air (control night), followed by one night spent sleeping while exposed to air with a 9% enriched oxygen content (oxygen-enriched night).
