Photochemical preparation of polyaminocyclodextrin-capped silver nanocomposites: mechanistic insights

Photoreduction of silver salts in the presence of three polyaminocyclodextrin derivatives (AmCD, Figure 1) constitutes a simple and straightforward route to obtain stable Ag nanoparticles. These systems have been suitably characterized (UV-vis, FT-IR, TEM, Figure 2) and tested for their antimicrobial activity.1 We observed that Ag photoreduction is effectively induced by irradiation with green light (513 nm); however, best performances are achieved with the use of a light source having at the same time a significant emission in the near-infrared (NIR) region. Imaging and manipulating the spin structure of nano- and mesoscale magnetic systems is a challenging topic in magnetism, yielding a wide range of spin phenomena such as skyrmions, hedgehog-like spin structures, or vortices. Surface contribution to the anisotropy of magnetic nanoparticles.

We calculate the contribution of the Neel surface anisotropy to the effective anisotropy of magnetic nanoparticles of spherical shape cut out of a simple cubic lattice. The effective anisotropy arises because deviations of atomic magnetizations from collinearity and thus the energy depends on the orientation of the global magnetization. The result is second order in the Neel surface anisotropy, scales with the particle volume and has cubic symmetry with preferred directions [+-1,+-1,+-1].

Rotating-field-driven ensembles of magnetic particles.

Vortex patterns in ensembles of magnetic particles driven by a rotating field are studied. The driving arises due to the lubrication forces between the rotating particles acting in the direction perpendicular to the radius vector between the particles. Since the lubrication forces cannot be equilibrated by the radial forces due to the dipolar attraction and steric repulsion, the ensemble is in a nonequilibrium state. A magnetic source imaging camera

We describe a magnetic source imaging camera (MSIC) allowing a direct dynamic visualization of the two-dimensional spatial distribution of the individual components Bx(x,y), By(x,y) and Bz(x,y) of a magnetic field. The field patterns allow—in principle— a reconstruction of the distribution of sources that produce the field B→ by inverse problem analysis. We compare experimentally recorded point-spread functions, i.e., field patterns produced by point-like magnetic dipoles of different orientations with anticipated field patterns. A microscopic approach to Casimir and Casimir-Polder forces between metallic bodies

We consider the Casimir-Polder interaction energy between a metallic nanoparticle and a metallic plate, as well as the Casimir interaction energy between two macroscopic metal plates, in terms of the many-body dispersion interactions between their constituents. Expressions for two- and three-body dispersion interactions between the microscopic parts of a real metal are first obtained, both in the retarded and non-retarded limits. Dynamics of anisotropic superparamagnetic particles in a precessing magnetic field.

A bifurcation diagram for anisotropic magnetic particles in a precessing magnetic field is analyzed. It is found that a synchronous regime in the case of a prolate particle exists for all precession angles of the magnetic field if the frequency of field rotation is below some critical value. An oblate particle has a synchronous regime in a limited range of precession angle. To understand the flow of suspensions of these particles in precessing fields, it is essential to take into account the differing dynamics of prolate and oblate particles.

Dynamics of an active magnetic particle in a rotating magnetic field.

The motion of an active (self-propelling) particle with a permanent magnetic moment under the action of a rotating magnetic field is considered. We show that below a critical frequency of the external field the trajectory of a particle is a circle. For frequencies slightly above the critical point the particle moves on an approximately circular trajectory and from time to time jumps to another region of space. Symmetry of the particle trajectory depends on the commensurability of the field period and the period of the orientational motion of the particle.
