De la patria (más) pequeña al mundo. Identidad nacional y socialismo español desde el País Valenciano (1931-1936)
2020
This article analyses the national discourse of Spanish socialism during the Second Republic and seeks to emphasise the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party’s identification with a Spanish national identity. Furthermore, by considering the case of the Valencian Region (País Valenciano), it points to ways in which that identity was expressed, showing the role of the local and regional spheres in the socialist interpretation of national identity. In this way, the Valencian example enables us to explore the situation “from below”, by studying political approaches, speeches, rites and practices in the militant press. The article argues that the national discourse of Spanish socialism found a solid…
Barcelona and SEAT, a History of Lost Opportunity: Corporate Marketing, Nation Branding, and Consumer Nationalism in the Automotive Industry
2015
Why is there no SEAT Barcelona? Barcelona is a well-named place brand, but SEAT consciously has disassociated itself from its geographic origins. This seems rather strange decision if one takes into account the increasing importance of the place-of-origin effect in automotive industry. This article describes how SEAT has constructed its Spanish identity and hidden its Catalan-Barcelona origins, and discusses SEAT’s own growing “denationalization” because of the acquisition by Volkswagen Group by using banal nationalism to gain the loyalty of the country’s nationalist consumers and to fashion a corporate image in line with Spain’sMarca España, or national brand. Through this decision, SEAT h…
Anverso y reverso de la nación: el discurso de la antiespañolada durante los primeros años 40
2015
During the immediate postwar years, different voices from the new francoist regime produced a discourse relatively spontaneous but, at the same time, recognizable enough addressed to denounce what they considered as an unacceptable deformation of the Spanishness. Basically, and in spite of the ideological differences amongst its producers, the critic raised from a common and painful nationalism which pointed at the foreign look —specially, the French romantic look— as creator and supporter of what they called España de pandereta. This look supposed a distortion and mystification of Spain as a picturesque nation that resulted in the españolada. The aim of this article is to explore this disc…
Parliament and the Press : Forging the United Nations in Wartime Britain, 1939–45
2020
During the Second World War, not only the United States but also Great Britain played a leading role in planning and establishing the United Nations (UN) as a new international organisation to replace the League of Nations. While scholarship on post‐war planning is extensive, relatively little exists on how the planning process was discussed and depicted publicly in Britain. The purpose of this article is to fill such lacunae by examining the two most important domains for public discussion at the time, the press and parliament. It will argue, first, that the League of Nations’ experience – its inability to use collective force and its optimistically democratic structure – overwhelmingly sh…
Exploring the sense distributions of homographs
2006
This paper quantitatively investigates in how far local context is useful to disam-biguate the senses of an ambiguous word. This is done by comparing the co-occurrence frequencies of particular context words. First, one context word representing a certain sense is chosen, and then the co-occurrence frequencies with two other context words, one of the same and one of another sense, are compared. As expected, it turns out that context words belonging to the same sense have considerably higher co-occurrence frequencies than words belonging to different senses. In our study, the sense inventory is taken from the University of South Florida homograph norms, and the co-occurrence counts are based…

Oblate Collectivity in the Yrast Structure of 194Pt
2005
A deep inelastic reaction using a 460 MeV 82Se beam incident upon a thick 192Os target was performed at the Legnaro National Laboratory, Italy. The resulting γ-decays were measured using the GASP array. Results for 194Pt extend the known level scheme of the yrast structure from spin I = (12 ħ) to (20 ħ). The irregularities in the sequence of the new transition energies and total Routhian surface calculations show a breakdown in collectivity with an yrast oblate shape remaining to high spin.
