The formation of local territorial administration in Poland in the years 1945–1952
2021
Połączenie systemów samorządu terytorialnego i rad narodowych skomplikował sytuację administracyjną w Polsce. Hierarchiczny układ rad, czyli podporządkowanie rad niższego szczebla radom wyższego szczebla, oznaczało odejście od jednej z podstawowych cech samorządu terytorialnego, czyli niezależności danego szczebla struktury administracyjnej w stosunku do poziomu znajdują…

Monenkeskinen yhteistyö ja minilateralismi käytännössä : tapauksena Somalian rannikon merirosvous
2022
Measuring integration in new countries of immigration
2018
Abstract The purpose of this study is to develop a framework to measure immigrant integration in emerging immigrant destinations. After several decades of intensive research, the definition and assessment of immigrants’ integration remains elusive. Increasingly more attempts have been made to foster scientific progress in the field in the las decades. Yet, immigrant integration in emerging destination countries remains particularly little studied despite several calls for more research on the topic. The developed integration framework (i.e. the Integration Score) is composed of 6 dimensions and 24 indicators of integration (4 indicators for every dimension). To empirically test the validity…
Has Multiculturalism Failed in Europe? Migration Policies, State of Emergency, and Their Impact on Migrants’ Identities in Italy
2014
This chapter analyzes migration policies in Italy within the larger frame of the debate on multiculturalism and its failure in Europe. The first part focuses on the exceptional flow of migrants that after the recent conflicts in Northern Africa was directed toward Europe across the Italian coast. The emergency raised issues for the defense of territories, social security, and preservation of identity. The author demonstrates the inefficiency of the Italian migration and emergency policies that has been adopted at the arrival of undocumented migrants from Northern Africa in 2011. The chapter uses the case of Italy to show the weakness of Europe in developing effective forms of coexistence an…
Students' Perception of School and Their Smoking and Alcohol Use: A Cross-National Study
2000
The objective of the paper is to study how 15 year old students' perceptions of the psychosocial environment in their schools, defined as student autonomy, teacher support, student support and demands, relate to smoking and alcohol use. Data from 15 year old students in Finland and Norway are included (n=2.816), using structural equation modelling to test theoretical models. The best model fitting the data shows that low student autonomy, low teacher support, student support and inadequate demands are significantly associated with health compromising behaviours directly, and indirectly through students' satisfaction with school. Low student autonomy is the strongest predictor of the four. T…
RELEVANCE OF INDICATORS OF SOCIAL EMOTIONAL HEALTH IN DIFFERENT SAMPLES OF ADOLESCENCE
2021
The aim of this research was to determine whether there are statistically relevant differences in Michael J. Furlong's concept of socio-emotional health with meta construct Covitality (SEV factor) between teenage and youth selections, gender, and nationalities in different schools. The participants of the research were 593 respondents from Latvia, aged 11-19 years. Out of the total selection of participants (N=593) there were 318 teens (M=13.01, SD=.84), of them 151 boys and 167 girls; the other group of 274 young people (M=15.85, SD = 1.02), consisted of 132 males and 142 females. To measure the positive aspects of the mental health, A Socio-emotional Health Survey was used (Social Emotion…
Selling Hungarian Fiction in Translation : Agency and Process
2021
This article focuses on the publication of Hungarian fiction in translation, with a special consideration of English as a TL. I argue that the mediation of Hungarian literature, a supply-driven activity, is an interactive social event influenced by factors including power, dominance and economics. I identify the social networks and review the institutional background as well as the process of the selection, translation and publication of Hungarian fiction. I discuss the role of various actors in the mediation of Hungarian literature: Hungarian publishers and literary agents; TL publishers; and translators from Hungarian into English. Besides doing research and conducting interviews with peo…
