Contribution of isotopic geochemistry to the origin of lead in the atmosphere of Sicily.

2001

Air quality can be assessed using mineral and biological indicators: airborne particulate matter, mosses, lichens, and pine needles. However, the origin of the pollutant is usually difficult to determine on the sole basis of concentrations, particularly when many sources are involved. In this study, we report some examples of application of lead isotopic geochemistry on airborne particulate matter, lichens and pine needles as a mean to decipher sources of lead pollution in Sicily. Furthermore, we evaluate the use of Pb/Sc and Pb/Br ratios to enhance the discriminating power of the isotopic method. Besides the methodological aspect, this work aims to provide, at least for lead, a summary of …

Mediastinal lymph node staging with transesophageal echography in cancer of the lung.

1990

Transesophageal echography (TEE) was used prospectively to study mediastinal lymph node enlargement in 23 patients with cancer of the lung. The findings were validated blindly by comparison with computed tomography (CT, n = 23) and pathological N classification after curative surgery (n = 9). Lymph nodes larger than 1 cm were defined as pathologically enlarged. In the upper mediastinum, 22% (8 vs 36), in the lower mediastinum including the subaortic region 112% (37 vs 33) and in the hilar region 67% (6 vs 9) of enlarged lymph nodes diagnosed by CT were detected by TEE. A pathological study in 9 patients demonstrated true positive findings in 2 vs 1, true negatives in 4 vs 5, false positives…

Pleuropulmonary changes induced by ergoline drugs.

1996

Classic ergolines, such as bromocriptine, methysergide and ergotamine, can induce chronic pleuropneumonitis. We present the cases of eight patients who developed similar changes whilst on other ergolines. In this retrospective case study spanning 1985-1995, clinical data, radiological material, pulmonary function, bronchoalveolar lavage and histopathology were reviewed. Earlier literature on ergoline-induced pleuropulmonary changes was reviewed. Eight middle-aged to elderly individuals of both sexes developed pleuropulmonary changes during long-term therapy with regular dosages of nicergoline (n = 4), dihydroergocristine (n = 3), or dihydroergotamine (n = 1). Bibasilar pleural thickening wi…

Atypical epithelial hyperplasia of the breast: state of the art.

2016

International audience; Introduction: Atypical epithelial hyperplasia (AEH) of the breast is considered benign histological lesions with breast cancer risk. This review focuses on clinical signification and management of AEH that remains controversial. Areas covered: A review of published studies was performed using medline database. In this review, we fully describe the current evidence available. In particular, we describe 1) data from immunohistochemistry and molecular studies that suggest AEH is a precursor of breast cancer; 2) epidemiological studies demonstrate low rate of breast cancer in women with AEH; 3) surgical excision is necessary after diagnosis of AEH, such as lobular carcin…

Nodular Lesion in Cheek With a Hair Tuft

2017

Trichostasis spinulosa is a rarely diagnosed disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, characterized by retention of telogen hairs within the dilated follicles. A hair tuft can be seen protruding from the follicles. We present a case of trichostasis spinulosa associated with intradermal melanocytic nevi, where dermoscopy helps to identify this entity.

The pathology of bladder cancer: An update on selected issues

2006

OBJECTIVE: To achieve a closer relationship between urologists and pathologists and to use a common language and identical objectives in the pathology of bladder cancer. METHODS AND RESULTS: Special emphasis was given to an analysis of the new World Health Organization (WHO) grading system, to the interpretation of the last Tumour-Nodes-Metastasis staging rules, and to identifying new markers of prognostic significance in clinical practice. A consensus was achieved on the main points. CONCLUSIONS: The 2004 WHO grading system must become acceptable to clinicians, perhaps by a minimal modification of the present terminology. Simple transurethral resection-biopsy should be expressed in terms o…

Intraductal aspiration: a promising new tissue-sampling technique for the diagnosis of suspected malignant biliary strictures

2012

Brushing is the most commonly used technique for biliary sampling at ERCP, despite its limited sensitivity. To evaluate intraductal aspiration (IDA) as a new combined endoscopic technique for cytodiagnosis, its cellular adequacy, diagnostic accuracy for cancer detection, feasibility, and safety. Prospective, observational study. Single tertiary referral center. IDA cellular adequacy, diagnostic accuracy for cancer detection, feasibility, and safety. From April 2009 to September 2010, 42 consecutive patients with suspected malignant biliary stricture underwent ERCP, with tissue sampling obtained with IDA. IDA included performance of standard brushing in all patients. After standard brushing,…

Interventistica eco-guidata per l’articolazione d’anca

2013

The purpose of this work is to review the main applications of ultrasound-guided hip intervention al procedures describing the indications and methodology. Ultrasound is a method considered safe for patients as it has not been shown a possible damage due to ultrasound energy transmitted towards the patient's tissues as opposed to methods that make use of ionizing radiation such as conventional radiography and computed tomography. In addition ultrasound is quick and effective in guiding the needle to the desired location avoiding vascular and/or nerve structures thus enabling greater security compared to the techniques performed in interventional fluoroscopy which also have the disadvantage of a large delivery of ionizing radiation for both patient and operator. Several authors have described the main techniques of ultrasound-guided hip intervention and its various applications that can be both diagnostic (as in the case of joint fluid aspiration to assess the presence or absence of septic arthritis) and therapeutic (as in the case of drugs inoculations or evacuation of exceeding intra-articular fluid).

Comparison of two needle models in terms of bevel deformation during truncal block of the inferior alveolar nerve

2007

Objectives: To evaluate the differences in terms of bevel deformation between two types of needle of the same length and external caliber, but with different internal diameters, during truncal block of the inferior alveolar nerve. Study design: Four operators performed truncal block of the inferior alveolar nerve and infiltrating anesthesia of the buccal nerve for the extraction of a lower third molar in 266 patients. The truncal block was carried out using a standard 27G x 35 mm needle with an internal caliber of 0.215 mm, or a 27G x 35 mm XL Monoprotect® needle with an internal caliber of 0.265 mm. The infiltrating anesthesia was made with a Monoprotect® or XL Monoprotect® needle, both wi…

Conifer needles as thermoplastic composite fillers: structure and properties

2016

This study describes the properties of thermoplastic polymer composites based on polyethylene (of low and high density) and ethylene-propylene copolymers using various types of conifer needles (pine, spruce, fir, and cedar) as fillers. For the needles, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TGA/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA/FTIR) were performed to investigate their structures and thermal resistance, as required for the composite processing methods. Moreover, structural differences were studied for the analyzed fillers and composite materials (FTIR). The results were compared with the values obtained for composites with conifer wood flour. Composites with conifer needles (pine) …
