Analysis of F response in upper motoneurone lesions

The F response can provide a measure of motoneurone excitability (MNE) and so it may be used to investigate upper motoneurone disorders. This report studies the F-wave configuration in patients with stroke to evaluate the changes of the central excitability of the motoneurones at different times after an acute cerebral insult. Various parameters of the F response, including amplitude (absolute and F%/M), duration, and persistence have been determined in 26 patients with unilateral hemiplegia and in 32 healthy subjects of both sexes in the same age range. Phantom Limb Pain in Daily Practice—Still a Lot of Work to Do!

Objectives. Effective treatment of phantom limb pain (PLP, pain felt in the part of the body of an amputated limb) is still difficult to achieve, and improved treatment is needed. It is therefore of paramount interest to understand the current practice of PLP therapy outside pain centers. Design. As a part of a nationwide survey, 537 amputees were asked 11 questions related to their treatment experiences and the pain relief. Furthermore, the patients' opinion about the quality of medical care was also asked. Results. Five hundred thirty-seven out of 1088 amputees returned the questionnaire (49.4%). F-Wave study in patients with chronic renal failure on regular haemodialysis

Motor nerve conduction along the entire length of ulnar and tibialis posterior nerves was studied in 30 uraemic patients and in 20 control subjects. The M and F latencies, MNCV (between the stimulus sites), FWCV (between the spinal cord and the stimulus sites) and F-ratio (conduction time ratio of proximal to distal segment) were assessed to evaluate the conduction in the proximal versus the distal nerve segment. In the uraemic patients, the slowing of nerve conduction involved both segments of the tested nerves to the same extent. To evaluate if repeated flicker-defined form (FDF) perimetry can detect visual field (VF) defects in glaucoma suspects with normal findings in achromatic standard automated perimetry (SAP).Patients with optic nerve heads (ONHs) or retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) findings clinically suspicious for glaucoma and normal SAP were enrolled. Chronic sacral neuromodulation for treatment of neurogenic bladder dysfunction: long-term results with unilateral implants

Abstract Objectives. To investigate the therapeutic value of sacral neuromodulation in patients with neurogenic disorders in whom conservative treatment options were unsuccessful. Neurogenic disorders may result in various forms of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Methods. The intermediate nerve (IN), also called the nerve of Wrisberg, is a relatively small nerve with a variable anatomical course. Currently, this nerve is not addressed well in the pertinent literature. Pre-operative diagnosis of IN tumours is clinically challenging due to the lack of related symptoms. Symptoms are typically caused by the functional deterioration of neighbouring anatomical structures. Median and tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials: middle-latency components from the vicinity of the secondary somatosensory cortex in humans

The topography of the middle-latency N110 after radial nerve stimulation suggested a generator in SII. To support this hypothesis, we have tried to identify a homologous component in the tibial nerve SEP (somatosensory evoked potential). Evoked potentials following tibial nerve stimulation (motor + sensory threshold) were recorded with 29 electrodes (bandpass 0.5-500 Hz, sampling rate 1000 Hz). Acetylcholine (ACh) activates both sudomotor fibers and primary afferent nociceptors. This leads to sudomotor and vasodilator axon reflexes, which can be diminished, for example, in neuropathies. Voxel-based morphometry depicts central compensation after vestibular neuritis.

Objective Patients who have had vestibular neuritis (VN) show a remarkable clinical improvement especially in gait and posture >6 months after disease onset. Methods Voxel-based morphometry was used to detect the VN-induced changes in gray and white matter by means of structural magnetic resonance imaging. Twenty-two patients were compared an average 2.5 years after onset of VN to a healthy sex-and age-matched control group.
