Minor Neurological Dysfunctions (MNDs) in Autistic Children without Intellectual Disability
2018
Background: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) require neurological evaluation to detect sensory-motor impairment. This will improve understanding of brain function in children with ASD, in terms of minor neurological dysfunctions (MNDs). Methods: We compared 32 ASD children without intellectual disability (IQ ≥ 70) with 32 healthy controls. A standardized and age-specific neurological examination according to Touwen was used to detect the presence of MNDs. Particular attention was paid to severity and type of MNDs. Results: Children with ASD had significantly higher rates of MNDs compared to controls (96.9% versus 15.6%): 81.3% had simple MNDs (p < 0.0001) and 15.6% had comple…

From different neurophysiological methods to conflicting pathophysiological views in migraine: a critical review of literature.
2014
Abnormal increased cortical responsivity to various types of stimuli plays a major role in migraine pathogenesis. Neurophysiological studies, however, have provided ambiguous findings of either hypo or hyper cortical excitability. This is why the term "dysexcitability" has been recently proposed to indicate a more general dysregulation of cortical excitability. The aims of this review are: (1) to provide existing knowledge and research advances in migraine pathophysiology; (2) to propose a unitary interpretation of apparently conflicting neurophysiological findings. Data of studies conducted in migraine through various evoked potentials techniques and non-invasive brain stimulation methods …
Sense of Coherence and Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: The Role of Physical and Neurological Disability
2022
Multiple sclerosis is a progressive demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that can lead to permanent disability and significantly impact the quality of life. The present study explores the relationship between neurological disability and disease symptoms, quality of life, and the level of sense of coherence, which is an important resource for coping with the disease. EDSS, GNDS, SOC-29, and MSIS-29 were used in the presented study. The study group consisted of 137 people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The study showed the correlation between most of the analyzed variables. Mood disability and fatigue were significant predictors of the sense of coherence and explained 34% o…
Skala Niesprawności Neurologicznej Szpitala Guy jako istotne narzędzie do oceny objawów występujących u osób z SM
2017
Skala Niesprawności Neurologicznej Szpitala Guy (GNDS, The Guy’s Neurological Disability Scale) jest istotnym narzędziem służącym do pomiaru niepełnosprawności u osób ze stwardnieniem rozsianym. Służy ona do określenia poziomu funkcjonowania w dwunastu ważnych obszarach. Celem obecnych badań było opracowanie polskiej wersji językowej skali GNDS i sprawdzenie jej trafności, rzetelności oraz przydatności do oceny niepełnosprawności występującej u osób ze stwardnieniem rozsianym. Grupę badaną stanowiło 175. pacjentów z rozpoznaniem stwardnienia rozsianego. W badaniu wykorzystano Rozszerzoną Skalę Niewydolności Ruchowej – EDSS, Skalę Niesprawności Neurologicznej Szpitala Guy – GNDS, Skalę Akcep…

Sensory systems sequentially extract increasingly complex features. ON and OFF pathways, for example, encode increases or decreases of a stimulus from a common input. This ON/OFF pathway split is thought to occur at individual synaptic connections through a sign-inverting synapse in one of the pathways. Here, we show that ON selectivity is a multisynaptic process in the Drosophila visual system. A pharmacogenetics approach demonstrates that both glutamatergic inhibition through GluClα and GABAergic inhibition through Rdl mediate ON responses. Although neurons postsynaptic to the glutamatergic ON pathway input L1 lose all responses in GluClα mutants, they are resistant to a cell-type-specifi…
