Future CEvNS experiments as probes of lepton unitarity and light-sterile neutrinos

2020

We determine the sensitivities of short-baseline coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) experiments using a pion decay at rest neutrino source as a probe for nonunitarity in the lepton sector, as expected in low-scale type-I seesaw schemes. We also identify the best configuration for probing light sterile neutrinos at future ton-scale liquid argon CE$\nu$NS experiments, estimating the projected sensitivities on the sterile neutrino parameters. Possible experimental setups at the Spallation Neutron Source, Lujan facility and the European Spallation Source are discussed. Provided that systematic uncertainties remain under control, we find that CE$\nu$NS experiments will be c…

Anomalies and sterile neutrinos : Implications of new theoretical results

2019

The reactor antineutrino and the gallium anomalies have been long unexplained. Possible explanations for both of these anomalies include new physics, such as the existence of one or more eV-scale sterile neutrino. However, the previous theoretical calculations, which do not replicate the experimental results, rely on many simplifying approximations. We have performed shell model calculations in order to gain insights into these issues. In the reactor-antineutrino analysis the beta decays contributing to the cumulative electron spectrum are usually assumed to have allowed spectral shapes. However, many of these decays are actually first-forbidden. Moreover, these decays dominate the experime…

Beyond the Minimal Standard Model

2011

The GSW theory is a great step forward in our understanding of electroweak interactions because it allows the well-known extremely successful theory of quantized electrodynamics and the theory of the weak CC and NC interactions to be cast into one unified, renormalizable local gauge theory. Renormalizability, in particular, is a very desirable property of the theory because it makes covariant perturbation theory a reasonable and well-defined approximation method for calculating physical quantities beyond the lowest order diagrams. Nevertheless, this model, very likely, is not the corner stone of a final theory of weak and electromagnetic interactions. It contains very many parameters which …

We have noticed some mistakes in formulae (A2) and (A5) in the appendix of our paper. The errors are not present in the code used in the analysis and hence none of the plots or results is affected. The correct formulae are below.

Connecting neutrino physics with dark matter

2014

The origin of neutrino masses and the nature of dark matter are two of the most pressing open questions of the modern astro-particle physics. We consider here the possibility that these two problems are related, and review some theoretical scenarios which offer common solutions. A simple possibility is that the dark matter particle emerges in minimal realizations of the see-saw mechanism, like in the majoron and sterile neutrino scenarios. We present the theoretical motivation for both models and discuss their phenomenology, confronting the predictions of these scenarios with cosmological and astrophysical observations. Finally, we discuss the possibility that the stability of dark matter o…

Light majoron cold dark matter from topological defects and the formation of boson stars

2019

We show that for a relatively light majoron ($\ll 100 $ eV) non-thermal production from topological defects is an efficient production mechanism. Taking the type I seesaw as benchmark scheme, we estimate the primordial majoron abundance and determine the required parameter choices where it can account for the observed cosmological dark matter. The latter is consistent with the scale of unification. Possible direct detection of light majorons with future experiments such as PTOLEMY and the formation of boson stars from the majoron dark matter are also discussed.

CeSOX: An experimental test of the sterile neutrino hypothesis with Borexino

2017

International audience; The third phase of the Borexino experiment that’s referred to as SOX is devoted to test the hypothesis of the existence of one (or more) sterile neutrinos at a short baseline (~5–10m). The experimental measurement will be made with artificial sources namely with a 144Ce–144Pr antineutrino source at the first stage (CeSOX) and possibly with a 51Cr neutrino source at the second one. The fixed 144Ce–144Pr sample will be placed beneath the detector in a special pit and the initial activity will be about 100 – 150 kCi. The start of data taking is scheduled for April 2018. The article gives a short description of the preparation for the first stage and shows the expected s…

Charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering off Xe isotopes

2019

Xenon detectors are used in the search for dark matter and neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta})$. As the next-generation detectors reach masses in the ton scale, neutrinos from astrophysical sources are soon predicted to become background in such detectors. Theoretical predictions of neutrino scattering cross sections and information of nuclear structure effects therein are crucial in accounting for the background. We perform calculations for differential and total cross sections of charged-current neutrino scattering off the most abundant xenon isotopes. The nuclear-structure calculations are made in the proton-neutron quasiparticle random…

An absence of neutrinos associated with cosmic-ray acceleration in gamma-ray bursts

2012

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) have been proposed as a leading candidate for acceleration of ultra high-energy cosmic rays, which would be accompanied by emission of TeV neutrinos produced in proton-photon interactions during acceleration in the GRB fireball. Two analyses using data from two years of the IceCube detector produced no evidence for this neutrino emission, placing strong constraints on models of neutrino and cosmic-ray production in these sources.
