A comprehensive comparison between halophilic granular and flocculent sludge in withstanding short and long-term salinity fluctuations

The effects of salinity fluctuations on the activity of autochthonous halophilic bacteria in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and flocculent activated sludge (FAS) reactors were investigated. The response of nitrifiers and denitrifiers activity to drastic and moderate salinity shocks in the short-term (ST) and long-term (LT) was examined. The BOD5removal efficiency decreased only in the reactors subjected to the drastic LT salinity increase. Nevertheless, stable performances were achieved 18 days after the shock in the AGS-R1 (90%), whereas after 27 days in the FAS-R1 (82%). The influences of chemical and electronic structures on the photophysical properties of polymeric carbon nitrides (PCNs) photocatalysts, which govern the microscopic mechanisms of the superior photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation, have been resolved in this work. Antiviral properties of silver nanoparticles against norovirus surrogates and their efficacy in coated polyhydroxyalkanoates systems

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) have strong broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and gained increased attention for the development of AgNP based products, including medical and food applications. Initially, the efficacy of AgNP and silver nitrate (AgNO3) was evaluated for inactivating norovirus surrogates, the feline calicivirus (FCV) and the murine norovirus (MNV). These norovirus surrogates were exposed to AgNO3 and AgNP solutions for 24 h at 25 °C and then analyzed by cell-culture assays. The synthesis, the antitumor activity, the SAR and, whenever described, the possible mode of action of 1,2,4-triazine derivatives, their N-oxides, N,. N'-dioxides as well as the benzo- and hetero-fused systems are reported. Herein are treated derivatives disclosed to literature from the beginning of this century up to 2016. Among the three possible triazine isomers, 1,2,4-triazines are the most studied ones and many derivatives having remarkable antitumor activity have been reported in the literature and also patented reaching advanced phases of clinical trials.
