Expression and prognostic value of the CD44 splicing variants v5 and v6 in gastric cancer
1997
In the present study, the expression and prognostic role of the CD44 splicing variants v5 and v6 were immunohistochemically investigated in 418 curatively resected gastric carcinomas. CD44v5 was expressed in 65·3 per cent (n=273) and CD44v6 in 77·0 per cent (n=322) of the tumours. Whereas the expression of CD44v5 was correlated with advanced pT categories, with lymph node involvement, and with the presence of blood and lymphatic vessel invasion, such a correlation could not be found for the variant v6. As shown by univariate analysis, patients with CD44v5-positive tumours had a significantly shorter overall survival than patients with CD44v5-negative tumours (P=0·049). In contrast, expressi…
Preoperative Radiochemotherapy and Radical Surgery of Advanced Head and Neck Cancers — Results of a Prospective, Multicenter DÖSAK Study
1994
Present research concerning the efficiacy of therapeutic strategies for squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and the oropharynx profits from former observational studies. The so-called retrospective German, Austrian, and Swiss Association for Head and Neck Tumors (DOSAK) study (Platz et al. 1986) served to review existing proposals for classification (UICC 1973, 1978; AJC 1978) and to develop a statistical classification which enables the head and neck oncologist to define prognostically homogeneous patient collectives. The treatment-dependent prognostic index (TPI) was the corresponding result (Platz et al. 1982).
37 Quantitative evaluation of lymph-vascular space invasion (LVSI) in patients affected by endometrial cancer: prognostic and clinical implications
2020
Objectives Lymph-vascular space invasion (LVSI) is associated with an increased risk of recurrence. Usually, the interpretation of LVSI is just qualitative, as presence or absence. The aim of this study is to examine the quantitative analysis of LVSI. Methods Retrospective multicentre study. It included 2300 consecutive patients who received a histologically confirmed diagnosis of endometrial cancer between January 2000 and December 2018 at the Gynaecologic Oncology Unit of two tertiary hospitals in Italy. Results The rate of lymph node metastasis increased from the 5% in patients with no LVSI, to 15% in patients with focal LVSI and 33% in those with diffuse LVSI (p Conclusion The presence …

Do Patients with Luminal A Breast Cancer Profit from Adjuvant Systemic Therapy? A Retrospective Multicenter Study
2016
Background Luminal A breast cancers respond well to anti-hormonal therapy (HT), are associated with a generally favorable prognosis and constitute the majority of breast cancer subtypes. HT is the mainstay of treatment of these patients, accompanied by an acceptable profile of side effects, whereas the added benefit of chemotherapy (CHT), including anthracycline and taxane-based programs, is less clear-cut and has undergone a process of critical revision. Methods In the framework of the BRENDA collective, we analyzed the benefits of CHT compared to HT in 4570 luminal A patients (pts) with primary diagnosis between 2001 and 2008. The results were adjusted by nodal status, age, tumor size and…
Signals involved in the early TH1/TH2 polarization of an immune response depending on the type of antigen.
1999
Abstract Background: The early production of distinct cytokines by epidermal cells (ECs) in response to antigen exposure may govern the development of T H1 -like immune responses, such as contact sensitivity, or T H2 -like immune responses, such as IgE-dependent allergies of the immediate type, depending on the type of antigen. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the signals induced by protein allergens with those induced by haptens in ECs and subsequently in local draining lymph node cells (LNCs) or splenocytes. Methods: BALB/c mice were primed in vivo with the protein allergens ovalbumin or birch pollen or the haptens 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene or trinitrochlorbenzene, respectiv…
Identifying Influential Nodes: The Overlapping Modularity Vitality Framework
2023
This paper proposes an Overlapping Modularity Vitality framework for identifying influential nodes in networks with overlapping community structures. The framework uses a generalized modularity equation and the concept of vitality to calculate the centrality of a node. We investigate three definitions of overlapping modularity and three ranking strategies prioritizing hubs, bridges, or both types of nodes. Experimental investigations involving real-world networks show that the proposed framework demonstrates the benefit of incorporating overlapping community structure information to identify critical nodes in a network.
Prognostic Influence of Pre-Operative C-Reactive Protein in Node-Negative Breast Cancer Patients
2014
The importance of inflammation is increasingly noticed in cancer. The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic influence of pre-operative serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in a cohort of 148 lymph node-negative breast cancer patients. The prognostic significance of CRP level for disease-free survival (DFS), metastasis-free survival (MFS) and overall survival (OS) was evaluated using univariate and multivariate Cox regression, also including information on age at diagnosis, tumor size, tumor grade, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status, proliferation index (Ki67) and molecular subtype, as well as an assessment of the…
High Lymph Vessel Density and Expression of Lymphatic Growth Factors in Peritoneal Endometriosis
2012
To investigate the occurrence of lymph vessels and lymphangiogenic growth factors in peritoneal lesions, we performed immunohistochemical staining of peritoneal lesions of 37 patients with antibodies against podoplanin (D2-40), lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1), prospero homeobox protein 1 (Prox-1), vascular epithelial growth factor (VEGF)-C/VEGF-D. Overall, 10 lesions were double stained against D2-40 and von Willebrand factor. The lymph vessel density in peritoneal lesion was significantly higher in comparison with healthy peritoneum. All lymph vessel makers could be detected, whereby the lymph vessel density of LYVE-1- and Prox-1-positive lymph vessels was signi…
A possible inflammatory reaction in a lateral neck cyst (branchial cyst) because of odontogenic infection
1994
Abstract We present the case of a woman who suffered from an acutely infected diffuse mass in the right neck. This mass had grown rapidly after difficult extraction of a tooth. Histologic analysis of the excised material revealed a lateral neck cyst with a lymph node that showed signs of an acute inflammation near the cyst. These findings support the theory that a preexisting lateral neck cyst may be “activated” by an intraoral inflammation. The different theories of the origin of lateral neck cysts are presented and discussed in the context of the case description.
