Surgical treatment of early breast cancer in day surgery.

2007

Quadrantectomy and associated sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is currently employed in most breast surgery centres as the gold standard in the treatment of early breast cancer. This approach has a modest morbidity and can usually be performed in a day-surgery regimen, leading to best acceptance by the patients. This reports outlines the experience of our Breast Unit with quadrantectomy and SLNB in day surgery for early breast cancer. One hundred patients presenting to our institution with primary invasive breast cancer measuring less than 3 cm and clinically negative axillary nodes underwent quadrantectomy and SLNB in day surgery. For 60 women with breast cancer the sentinel node was nega…

Los beneficios del mar: negocios e inversiones económicas de la oficialidad naval en el siglo XVIII

2019

Throughout the eighteenth century, the Spanish navy was extensively reformed and enhanced as a consequence of the new model of Monarchy that the Bourbons introduced. Among the measures adopted, it is remarkable the erection of the naval officers corps according to the needs and obligations that maritime war had in this century. This group becomes the paradigm of the new professionalization and new training approach, and its members had great relevance due to its great mobility around the empire and the power of the naval institution. This means that a part of the naval officers were placed in privileged positions and at the intersection of diverse political, social and economic networks. Th…

An Energy-Autonomous Wireless Sensor with Simultaneous Energy Harvesting and Ambient Light Sensing

2021

Wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) are generally powered by batteries, which results in a substantial limitation to the places where the nodes can be installed, to the maximum number of deployable devices, and to the node lifetime. To meet the demand for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications that require a large number of maintenance-free, low cost, wireless sensor nodes, this paper proposes a wireless sensor platform with a single photovoltaic transducer that performs the dual role of harvesting energy and sensing ambient light. This dual use allows even smaller and cheaper nodes that do not require any form of supporting external power, with a reduced component count. The device implements off-…

Energy harvesting for mobile agents supporting wireless sensor networks

2022

Abstract Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been deployed widely in many different application including in civil and military fields. The sensing data from the networks is very diverse and may cost huge energy consumption for transmission. Hence, mobile sensors with high capacity are deployed to support the static sensors dealing with longer range communicating distances and also supplying power wirelessly the sensors if possible. This paper focuses on an energy harvesting (EH) design for either mobile agents or sensor nodes in WSNs. A hybrid EH system can harvest energy from ambient environment around to power the mobile sensors and static sensors. In addition, these mobile sensors and …

A Battery-Free Wireless Smart Sensor platform with Bluetooth Low Energy Connectivity for Smart Agriculture

2022

Smart agriculture systems, which integrate sensors and data analysis into agricultural production processes, are increasingly proving an effective solution for reducing food production waste, yield production increase, and product quality improvement. In this context, this paper deals with a wireless sensors platform for humidity, temperature, and light detection that has the peculiarity to be self-powered and battery-free. The main advantage of the proposed solution is the elimination of maintenance interventions due to battery replacement. Therefore, the availability of install-and-forget sensors allows an easy diffusion for a capillary detection of plant health and growth parameters thro…

Movement Detection with Event-Based Cameras: Comparison with Frame-Based Cameras in Robot Object Tracking Using Powerlink Communication

2018

Event-based cameras are not common in industrial applications despite the fact that they can add multiple advantages for applications with moving objects. In comparison with frame-based cameras, the amount of generated data is very low while keeping the main information in the scene. For an industrial environment with interconnected systems, data reduction becomes very important to avoid network congestion and provide faster response time. However, the use of new sensors as event-based cameras is not common since they do not usually provide connectivity to industrial buses. This work develops a network node based on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), including data acquisition and trac…

Moving RTS/CTS to the frequency domain: an efficient contention scheme for 802.11ax networks

2019

In this paper, we propose a contention mechanism based on the execution of multiple contention rounds in the frequency domain (ReCHo), which is designed to offer high throughput performance and robustness with respect to imperfect carrier sensing. The main idea is using narrow tones as signalling messages for performing channel access contentions and allowing the Access Point (AP) to echo these signals, in order to extend the sensing capabilities to all the stations associated to the AP. In particular, we refer to the emerging IEEE 802.11ax standard, showing how our scheme can boost performance of random access with respect to the current version of IEEE 802.11ax OFDMA Back-Off (OBO), even …

Tiesāšanās izdevumu regulējums Latvijas tiesību sistēmā

2018

Current Progress in Particle-Based Systems for Transdermal Vaccine Delivery

2020

Transcutaneous immunization (TCI) via needle-free and non-invasive drug delivery systems is a promising approach for overcoming the current limitations of conventional parenteral vaccination methods. The targeted access to professional antigen-presenting cell (APC) populations within the skin, such as Langerhans cells (LCs), various dermal dendritic cells (dDCs), macrophages, and others makes the skin an ideal vaccination site to specifically shape immune responses as required. The stratum corneum (SC) of the skin is the main penetration barrier that needs to be overcome by the vaccine components in a coordinated way to achieve optimal access to dermal APC populations that induce priming of…

The sonographic pattern of neck lymph nodes in chronic autoimmune thyroiditis.

2013

Background: Neck lymph nodes may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (CAT).We hypothesized that the involvement of cervical lymph nodes in CAT may be associated with a different sonographic pattern of neck nodes in comparison to subjects without CAT. Methods: We included 106 patients (92 females and 14 males) with CAT and 70 control subjects (53 females andm17 males) without clinical, biochemical, and ultrasonographic evidence of thyroid and neck diseases. We performed laboratory tests (thyrotropin, antithyroperoxidase antibodies, antithyroglobulin antibodies, and ultrasonography) to evaluate in each group: (i) thyroid function, autoimmunity, and morphology; (i…
