From stage to brain: Montage as a new principle of scientific narrative

German Dadaists, Italian and Russian Futurists and Constructivists created in their experiments multi-medial orthopedic bodies as products of collage and montage. Sergei Eisenstein, who was influenced by these experiments, organized his theatrical productions as a chain of independent fragments capable of entering any possible combination/recombination and labelled this method “montage of attractions”. Pattern formation driven by cross-diffusion

In this work we are interested in describing the mechanism of pattern formation for a reaction-diffusion system with nonlinear diffusion terms (which take into account the self and the cross-diffusion effects). The reaction terms are chosen of the Lotka-Volterra type in the competitive interaction case. The cross-diffusion is proved to be the key mechanism of pattern formation via a linear stability analysis. A weakly nonlinear multiple scales analysis is carried out to predict the amplitude and the form of the pattern close to the bifurcation threshold. Existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of positive solutions for nonlinear eigenvalue problems

We study the existence of positive solutions for perturbations of the classical eigenvalue problem for the Dirichlet $p-$Laplacian. We consider three cases. In the first the perturbation is $(p-1)-$sublinear near $+\infty$, while in the second the perturbation is $(p-1)-$superlinear near $+\infty$ and in the third we do not require asymptotic condition at $+\infty$. Using variational methods together with truncation and comparison techniques, we show that for $\lambda\in (0, \widehat{\lambda}_1)$ -$\lambda>0$ is the parameter and $\widehat{\lambda}_1$ being the principal eigenvalue of $\left(-\Delta_p, W^{1, p}_0(\Omega)\right)$ -we have positive solutions, while for $\lambda\geq \widehat{\…

Many-body applications of the stochastic limit: a review

We review some applications of the perturbative technique known as the {\em stochastic limit approach} to the analysis of the following many-body problems: the fractional quantum Hall effect, the relations between the Hepp-Lieb and the Alli-Sewell models (as possible models of interaction between matter and radiation), and the open BCS model of low temperature superconductivity.

Lifetime of the superconductive state in short and long Josephson junctions

We study the transient statistical properties of short and long Josephson junctions under the influence of thermal and correlated fluctuations. In particular, we investigate the lifetime of the superconductive metastable state finding the presence of noise induced phenomena. For short Josephson junctions we investigate the lifetime as a function both of the frequency of the current driving signal and the noise intensity and we find how these noise-induced effects are modified by the presence of a correlated noise source. Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations of Models Related to High-Tc Superconductivity on a Transputer Network

Much of the insight into the low temperature behaviour of two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets has been recently obtained by extensive Monte Carlo. These models are relevant in the study of the magnetic behaviour of high Tc compounds containing copper-oxide layers. While of little technical importance, the physical properties of these models are certainly important for the understanding of the new type of behaviour that leads to superconductivity under certain conditions.

Digit replacement: A generic map for nonlinear dynamical systems

A simple discontinuous map is proposed as a generic model for nonlinear dynamical systems. The orbit of the map admits exact solutions for wide regions in parameter space and the method employed (digit manipulation) allows the mathematical design of useful signals, such as regular or aperiodic oscillations with specific waveforms, the construction of complex attractors with nontrivial properties as well as the coexistence of different basins of attraction in phase space with different qualitative properties. EMI Filter Re-Design in a SMPS with Inductor in Saturation

This paper analyzes the design issues of the input EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) filter's in a switching mode power supply where the power inductor is operated in saturation. Starting with a SMPS equipped with linear inductor, the input filter is firstly designed to comply with Standards. Then, a new inductor with a smaller core size is employed in the same SMPS to exploit saturation. The EMI filter is re-designed, taking into account the increase of EMI introduced by the non-linear operation of the inductor. Finally, the reduction of the inductor's size and cost is compared with the increased size and cost of the EMI filter.

Non-volatile memory characteristics of a Ti/HfO2/Pt synaptic device with a crossbar array structure

The resistive switching and synaptic behavior of a fabricated Ti/HfO2/Pt crossbar array device are investigated. The results demonstrated that TiOx layers are created by the movement of oxygen ions during the positive SET process, thereby improving the endurance and multilevel switching behavior of the device. The random properties of SET process were described with the help of stochastic model of memristor based on the length of conductive filament.
